Woah! Definitely out of left field on the timing, but it was going to happen sooner or later. The man is aging, wanting to try different things, etc. And Apple will be one of his top clients so he will still maintain an advisory role and a strong relationship with the company for sure.
There is another Jony Ive out there eager to breathe new life into Apple, and I have no doubt Jony will be around from time to time mentor him or her

Ok so it’s either good riddance or Apple is doomed? How about a thank you for your contributions? He has done so much for product design for the industry as a whole, and his place in history is very well deserved.
Maybe expand his thinking doing design for other companies then passing that back to Apple and will allow Apple to hopefully explore different design ideas from other sources.
Steve himself would be an offer he can’t refuse. Tim lacks the same energy and enthusiasm Steve had.
I've long felt that Ive's aesthetic has overridden more practical considerations of functionality over pure elegance of form. I do hope this provides an opportunity for other voices to be heard within Apple that may pull the products back from the brink of reduced utility in the pursuit of trimming off that extra millimeter and reducing that extra gram.
Settle down guys... Forstall is a software engineer, not a designer.
This is the culmination of Ive's life's work - he just made Apple thinner!

Regardless of what we think of his recent output, Ive is undoubtedly the most valuable designer in the hardware space. The fact that Apple didn’t spend in order to keep Ive around, even if in name only, is a flag to investors that Apple has fully transitioned from a hardware company to a services company.
Oh wow, I just realized this could affect iOS as well since he's done design on that since iOS 7.
