I think it’s awesome news.
Maybe now we can have number pads on larger laptops, an iMac with ports on the front, mice that are usable while charging, etc.
He is way over the hill and hasn't designed anything ground breaking in nearly a decade.
Who here remembers that laughable aluminum table.
Okay, but can we at least get him to come back and narrate all those over-the-top product design videos??
Amazed by some of the negative comments celebrating this news. It’s astonishing there is so little knowledge of what this guy has delivered. I think he’ll be missed at the company but obviously his input will continue as his primary client in his new venture is Apple.
This will be interesting as we enter a post-Jobs/Ive era. Each may have worked to shape a culture at Apple to continue in their philosophy, but never again will there be a collaborative partnership the likes of which produced so many great products. Best of luck
Stop hating on Jonny Ive - Apple still has the best design out of all tech companies. MacBook Air looks great, Apple Watch is amazing, iPhone is nice. What do you want. The interface is the best as well.
Jony had a heck of run and left his mark on history but change is good. There ten thousand eager and innovative designers out there ready to pick up that torch and take us new places.
You think he didn’t work on the new Mac Pro? He just sat down for the past 2-3 years and didn’t do anything you think? You act like the Mac Pro was designed 2 weeks before the announcement lol. It will probably go at least 2 years before the products he has worked on will come out in the future.

Right after Steve died I had hoped Ive would have stepped up to become the new Steve. To demand excellence across the entirety of a product. He never did. This is gonna be fine.

Frankly, his designs have been rather uninspiring the past few years.
I was hoping that meant Apple will now prioritize battery life, power, and function over devices that are 0.2mm thinner each generation. But then I read that Apple will become Ive's firm's primary customer. Wah wah.
New apple fans today don't appreciate the long haul has made to be the best computer/phone company in the world. It may be time for him to transition in his life, but don't forget how he has changed and influenced everything has done in the last 25+ years.

Apple watch is the most uninspired bland design of nearly all their products.
Literally a rounded rectangle following the exact design philosophy of the iPhone 6.
I hope that this means that "function" becomes more important than "form".
What is better than best....?....nothing, they couldn't for instance make a better design than the full aluminium displays, or the cheese grater MacPro, those are classic designs, same goes for the MBP, I can't imagine a better design.
People talk about Forstall being so great. Ok. So what is he exactly doing now then that’s so innovative?
