I'm not too concerned, as it says "though Ive is leaving, Apple will be one of Ive's primary clients, which means Ive will continue to do design work for the Cupertino company"

Even if he wasn't going to be still involved, Apple would still need a designer, and this "new designer" might bring in some different thinking/ideas to Ive. Ive leaving was bound to happen one day.

What ??? and he didn't make a video about it ??? lol seriously though he hasn't been at any key events for agers and even a few years ago when he was it was a video !

Good luck Mr Ive.

if the rumours about him backing off design for the most part around 2015 are true, than Apple's current dryspell in new look/feel of their devices and small changes starts making a lot more sense.

It's not unreasonable for burnout to occur. Hopefully he'll move on and get to do new things outside of Apple's "lines".

Could also be great for Apple now. If Ive was burning out and just didn't have a lot left to give Apple, than maybe whoever comes in to replace him will bring in some fresh new ideas.

HOWEVER, I'm not sure if anyone else has noticed, since the turn of the year financials came out, there's been a exodus of top level staff, including executives like Angela and Johnny.

wonder if Cook is getting ready to shake things up, or just people getting out at the top? either way. What a long and crazy trip its been

How much of a product did he design?
Was it the outer appearance or the inside and component layout as well?

I know I will probably get flamed for this, but on outer design, phones and laptops have been pretty static for quite a while, certainly not what I would call major designs.
The new Mac Pro would be the first product that seems significantly different to me.

I appreciate there is probably more going on inside the product though with newer technologies etc needing to be fitted in.

Jony! Thanks so much for some awesome designs through the years. With that said, I'm not sad to see him go, seems Apple has been fashion over function in the recent years. Ready to see what the next page in Apples history has to offer.

Bravo! Nice to see a balanced opinion of this situation, instead of the typical "what have you done for me lately" rooting for failure that most humans partake in. Jonathan's work for Apple cannot be diminished or dismissed, as it was crucial for their success and comeback from the brink when Steve returned. That entire early comeback team (Jony, Avi, Phil, Mitch, Ruby, Fred, others) were part of a fascinating business story that should never be diminished based on Apple's recent foibles.

Can't see this as anything but good.

No great artist spent his career tied chained to a corporation. Creativity loves freedom. Both parties are now free. This is good for Ive and good for Apple too.

They'll still be working together, but the relationship will be a lot healthier now. Expect fresh ideas.

I kinda hope that Jony Ive gets to design every day items and every day building schemes. Everyone deserves to use items and live in environments that are carefully designed. I hope that things like this are what he’s alluding too.

No doubt he’ll take some big commissions but I hope he balances it with some everyday ones. After all he has previously designed a toilet, faucet and a pen.

I think that's the plan. Get off that narrow "consumer electronics" path he's been stuck on for years. And the great thing is that all the outside work he does will start to inform and influence his future work for Apple. It's going to be a breath of fresh air for everyone.

The design dept he leaves behind at Apple gets a shot in the arm too. "The King is dead" (well, off on a semi-vacation, actually ;) But certainly out of everyone's hair). Lots of new thinking will suddenly be unleashed.

Which one is worse?

Probably the XR. The narrow screen is a real issue reading web pages, especially with the notch making landscape not usable. Text gets rendered so small I can't read it (which is definitely an issue with my eyesight, but still an issue the XR has no solution for). My wife still uses my old 7+, every time I borrow her phone to do something, it is luxury compared to the XR.

The issues with the 2017 pale by comparison. The keyboard is uncomfortable, it's so underpowered it locks up rendering pages as simple as macrumors sometimes, lack of modern ports is a nuisance. It's all so minor next to the nightmare that is the XR.

I wish Jony Ive the best. He was a key part in getting Apple to the success level they are at today. Here's to his continued success!

Lol...Thinner and smaller are not good ideals for designing most things of value.

Few people need number pads, ports on the front..no thanks, mice..I agree.

You obviously don’t use Numbers or Excel heavily enough to need numerical keypad lol. Not many people can type the numbers above home row without looking accurately and as fast as those on numerical keypad on the right (regardless if your left/right hand predominant).

You're right about that (Excel), I still think though that lots more people do not use it more than people who need it.
