I really don't like these kinds of arrangements. I don't see the point of leaving a full time job, but keeping your former employer as a client.

If he's looking for more personal time, or more opportunity to pursue the kinds of projects that started to seem like a distraction from his day job, then maybe this is just a way of not spooking the shareholders with an abrupt transition...
The former employee can accomplish her goals, and the former employer retain the talent.

So what's it gotta be? "Designed by Apple in California" still or will it be "Designed by LoveFrom in California"? Would be weird to let Jony design a new product and then print Apple's name on it, but also weird to see Jony's company name there.

As the next few years unfold, it’s going to be fascinating to see Apple without Ive - and we’ll be able to judge what influence that he had.

Perhaps we’re going to see an Apple where form becomes more balanced with function again. And maybe one where the product’s eco friendliness is just as important as its design.

It feels like it’s time for a generational shift with Ive providing an important critical eye over product direction as a consultant.

And you can bet that he’ll have signed a contract that prevents him from working on products like phones, glasses and cars for anyone other than Apple that’s for more money than most of us will see over hundreds of lifetimes of work.

He's been handcuffed by the powers at be at Apple. And while he's had the keys to the city inside Apple.. outside he just isn't allowed to explore. Having said that.. unless Apple understands they can put their foot down and look elsewhere.. not much is going to change since he's still going to be working with them. To Be Continued...

I feel kinda bad for Sabih Khan. He just got a great promotion and nobody cares because: wait, what? Jony Ive is leaving?!

I feel like he's going to get home to tell his wife he got promoted to SVP and her response is just going to be "That's nice, honey. I can't believe Jony is leaving!"

I’m going to predict that everything is going to be alright without him. He’s hugely influential, but you don’t top-down direct every decision everywhere in an organization that big. His VP’s and their teams are absolutely where most direct decision making goes. Johnny was responsive for all the good and bad decisions in iOS7 directly. Apple has been walking back the worst parts of the experience design choices made at that juncture ever since. You’ll note that the pretty-awful-even-then Mac Pro was also released during pressure to show big shifts in direction. All I’m saying is that no single person is irreplaceable no matter the impact because if Johnny was doing his job, which I believe he was, he built a strong team. He had to. It’ll be alright.

This is very surprising. He’s done a great job (from a insignificant user’s standpoint), but at the very same time I’m hope this spur something new.

I wouldn’t be surprised if he came back to the UK.

Finally!! He’s been “phoning it in” far too long. This is the best news out of Apple for a long time. Hopefully Cook next.

Apple needs a clean break from Ive, don’t hire or contract him back in any form. Fresh ideas is what Apple really needs right now.

I'm not the poster you replied to, but I would say he hasn't designed anything good since Steve Jobs. The iPhone 4 was gorgeous (and Jobs had a hand in it), the 5 was nice, somewhat derivative of the 4 and definitely was far enough along in development that Jobs would have had a say in its appearance...it hit the street a year after his death.

The bezel-less iPad is a poor design. It's not very attractive and there is no comfortable way to hold it. There is so much form over function in that iPad that it's just sad. Trading the home button for a semi-funcitonal gesture is just a bad design, and after 6 months with an iPhone XR, I can say touchID is far, far more usage friendly than faceID.
And after 10 months with a XS I can say Face ID is vastly superior to Touch ID. The swipe up is way more natural than resting your finger on a button.
