Sky high prices, falling sales and too many products which are fragmented. Sounds like the Apple who nearly went bankrupt all those years ago. Only difference is there’s no Steve Jobs or Jony Ive to help them out if it all goes to pot this time.

Though I don’t think they are in danger of going bankrupt this time around with the huge cash piles they’ve built.

But the new Mac Pro starting price of £6000 shows how they have skewed away from what Apple was when Steve was in charge. It’s all about the money now. They just need a massive fall in sales to kick them back in touch. The cost of building a similar machine to the base Mac Pro is £4000.

So what does this actually mean?

Thicker devices?
More ports?
Less courage?
Better keyboards?
Matte screens?
No more TouchBars?
Apple logo glowing again?

Who knows?

I wish him well though, he's a good designer.

Apple will be a major client of the new firm as per Apple newsroom. So now Johnny Ive special edition products can be purchased at X more $.

I haven't been able to read through all nine pages of comments so I don't know if this has been said already.

I don't think this will change much. It seems that Apple will continue to use Ive and his company for the overall design aesthetic of their products, with perhaps some of the minor details now falling to Ive's protegé's back in Cupertino.

The question is why Jonny Ive has chosen to leave Apple at all. Well, given his past history, my best guess is that he sees products such as the iPhone and iPad as having reached peak design. All manufacturers are basically producing whole-screen glass slabs. There isn't much left for a designer like Ive to do with them. Ive does like his side projects and I would imagine setting up his own company will allow him to take on new and exciting projects outside of Apple and the potential conflicts of interest that could occur if he stayed. At the same time, he still gets to do the bits and pieces Apple probably still need him to do.

Unexpected, yes, but I guess it makes sense.

In my mind I think the Professional Workflow Team and he were clashing on things... and the workflow team was responsible for the new Mac Pro (but not the price), and the fact that the Macs are being updated more regularly now. So Jony felt it was time to go. From now on products will be more function/form balanced.

Its a nice thought... don't ruin it for me macrumors forums!!! =)

This is a reach, but does anyone think it’s odd or perhaps the reason his departure is coinciding with the iPhone XI!?

In other words, was this 100% voluntary!? The timing does seem a little off.
