I would think .mac would be going up against gmail. Unless Apple will be providing a way for enterprises to run their own .mac servers.

Now for small business that may not be a bad idea. Apple hosted exchange type services...

That is a very interesting idea!

Especially, since Apple will let enterprises run a flavor of iTunes App Store so they can control distro of iPhone apps within an organization.

Hmmm....

A very interesting idea indeed. It would make perfect sense. You would not have storage limits as you do currently.

I also wonder if it would make sense for apple to partner with google on the personal accounts and offer an ever increasing storage as you get with gmail. They do email domain hosting already so you would not have to change email address, could still be @mac.com it would also offer greater storage and they seem to have the infrastructure to be able to offer a reliable service.

Mobile Me

The original macrumors article about 'Mobile Me' speculates that it could be linked to "providing iTunes wirelessly over cell phone networks".

Since then, Apple has (re)positioned iTunes, via the iPhone, as a repository for what is, essentially, a 'mobile me' ('my' contacts, mail, calendars, photos, music, videos).

So, "providing iTunes wirelessly over cell phone networks" could mean that all of this 'mobile me' content is sync-able over the cell phone network. Maybe it's a 'clould' storage service for iTunes content, i.e. just like your iPhone, you have a 'Mobile Me' item on the sidebar in iTunes, and you can drag media content onto it, and then stream/download/sync this content to your iPhone when out and about. Maybe it's a bit ambitious for 3G networks, so maybe it's a wifi concept. I dunno.

Or, maybe Apple have wowed media content providers with some crazy new music/video/media concept, perhaps a subscription based model, where users can subscribe to .Mac, and obtain media content via Mac and iPhone for a yearly fee. Don't Nokia do something like this with music- pay £50 for free content for the lifetime of the device?

Just a couple of thoughts, that to be honest I'm not to taken with..

but, the new branding and trademark details definitely links 'syncing' and 'lifestyle' concepts... i.e. 'lifestyle' being over and above the sync/storage concept that .mac primarily is at the moment.

I hope I don't jinx it,

And I have no idea what the new name will be, but I'm thinking we may know a lot more this Tuesday, June 1 (I know, another Tuesday rumor).
Here's why I think this. I've been waiting for a book to come out called "Cool Mac Apps", by Robin Williams. It goes into great detail about iLife 08 and .Mac. It was originally scheduled to come out in March, then April, then it had a date of June 8th. I just checked again and it is now coming out June 1st! A Tuesday! Seriously, I have been keeping a close eye on its release date because I want to get it. What with all the shuffling of the date, and to now move it up a week to the 1st, makes me think .Mac will be updated/upgraded as well then. Robin Williams (no, not that Robin Williams) has written a lot of tutorials for Apple and has a pretty good relationship with them. She gets a lot of software from Apple before it becomes available to the public, so is no doubt privy to certain things.
Anyway, that's my hypothesis and I'm sticking to it! :)

I call true. After thinking that Apple would never call their unreleased laptop, the MacBook Air, I was made to eat my words! So as Mobile Me sounds as stupid as MacBook Air, I say that the rumour is true!
While I can't fault your logic, I really hope you're wrong...

naming a service "mobile me" sound equally lame as if apple would name a notebook "air"

... wait. they actually did.

:apple: - bad product names since 2008

Apple has used bad product names for a lot longer than 2008. Seriously, who call a computer "Lisa?" And "PowerBook?" How nerdy... (as I sit typing on mine). If the product is good enough, I guess the name doesn't matter so much...

I don't think the name will changed as the new files for it still contain images with .mac as the title. These are completely new files.

A revamped .Mac sounds awesome, in fact, I will probably get it. Not really a fan of the new name though... just my two cents.

I think I would really like that idea. All of where this seems to be headed is pretty exciting.

However, this is my favorite part of what you said lol "pay £50 for free content". Haha :p

Why would "Mobile Me" necessarily mean a rebranding of .Mac? Couldn't Mobile Me just be another element of the entire .Mac experience? ...i.e. just another feature of .Mac?

It could just become the campaign slogan for it. Pat Riley trademarked "Three-Peat".

Anyone have any speculation on pricing? I think the 69 dollars that Amazon charges is worth it, but just wondering if anyone expects a drop, or should I just order it now?

Suppose they drop the price to $69 at Apple and $49 at Amazon. Is the $20 that big of a deal to you? if it is ... then wait. If not ... then buy.

Hmmmmm.......

I bet there is a team at Apple who has actually deliberately put these easter eggs into the SDK and 10.5.3 and registered that domain JUST TO LAUGH AT US.

I don't think .Mac needs a new name... I think it sounds awesome as is. More features, god yes, but thats with everything... I mean I want facebook to get more features and I want my cat to play with more features....

And a price drop will be nice.

But yeah, this rumour looks too set up for me... Sadly.

I think this is exactly it!! Just another service added to .mac and it relates to the iPhone and iPod Touch only.

I think based on a mac it will still always be .mac the string change is just to allow the service to change in either situation, be it on the mac or the iPhone.

I'm gonna stick with the situation that it will still be .mac just with extra service of mobile me relating only to the iPhone or iPod Touch.

iCal Publishing
I like the calendar publishing - My wife subscribes to my calendar from her MacBook but does not have a .mac account -- because of the cost of the "family" option. It would be nice if she could publish and I could subscribe to her calendar under the same .mac account. -- Maybe I can and am missing something...

iPhoto Publishing
The 2nd thing like I like about .mac is the Gallery publishing from iPhoto. I'd like to see collections of albums each with their own optional passwords. The advantage of album collections being visitors wouldn't have to wade through a hundred albums some of which they may not have access to.

iPhone to .mac
When I get the iPhone, I'm looking forward to publishing at the time I take the photo but I wonder how that would work or currently works. I take the hi-resolution photo but it gets sent to iPhoto at a reduced resolution. When I later sync the iphone with my Mac adding the hi-res version of the photo to iPhoto and later sync with .mac, what happens with the low-res photo sitting in my .mac Gallery? Does it show up in iPhoto with my other published albums?

My question is ( and i apologize for not reading through 153 replies ) is:

If the new service will sync with iPhone then can we presume that the new dotmac will work with iPhone owners who sync to a windows PC?

It most. The majority of iPhone users are windows users.

is June 1st not Sunday ???
this all sounds really good. Wireless syncing of my iPhone and what about(hopefully with a better camera) uploading pictures directly from iPhone to your iDisk/iWeb site/photo gallery.
