Apple is going all out with promotions for the popular Severance Apple TV+ show today, and as of right now, you'll find a new "Lumon Terminal Pro" listed on Apple's Mac site.

The Lumon Terminal Pro is designed to look similar to the machines that Severance employees like Mark S. and Helly R. use for macrodata refinement. The Terminal features a blue keyboard, a small display with wide bezels, and a trackball for navigation purposes.

Unfortunately, you can't actually buy a Lumon Terminal Pro, though it would undoubtedly sell well to Severance fans. Apple's page links to the company's actual Macs, and to a behind the scenes editing video that Apple shared this morning.

The second season of Severance wrapped up last Thursday, so the entire series is now available to stream on Apple TV+. Apple renewed Severance for season three, and Severance director Ben Stiller has promised that it won't take another three years for us to get another season.

Wow - A Lumon Terminal Pro and no brain implant needed? 🤣

Honestly? Apple continues to present itself as an innovative device manufacturer. And not as a funny media company. They desperately want to maintain a façade of perfection. See the lack of apology regarding Siri and Apple Intelligence.

But then such a "humorous" advertisement for a TV SERIES ON THEIR OWN SUBSCRIPTION.

This is as uncharacteristically Apple as the debacle surrounding AI.
I'm waiting for them to announce that Siri has a new name, Kier.

The video on the editing process was interesting - I love that kind of techy behind the scenes stuff.

For anyone interested, the prop company that built the testing device (Lumon Industries WoeMeter) from episode 7 has shared a write-up about the process: https://make3.co/work/woemeter.
In my opinion, Apple needs to dial down the marketing for Severance a little at this point. It’s starting to feel exhausting and a bit too try-hard.

* According to a dodgy, paywalled „report“ by an analytics company without any access to actual subscriber numbers and/or cost/benefit data which also, without any shame and/or logic, correctly states that Apple services, and especially Apple One, which TV+ is part of, do make huge profits each and every quarter.
The Information isn't an analytics company. But if you consider them to be dodgy, then so must be the Wall Street Journal. The WSJ is paywalled and the person who started The Information was a reporter for the WSJ.

Plus, if The Information is a dodgy company, would Bloomberg Media partner up with them? Unless.... Bloomberg Media is dodgy too. 🤔 That's it. They're dodgy too. It all makes sense now. No reliable company would have someone like Mark Gurman working for them. 😂

You know if you change the title of that article to “ Apple is spending $1B a year on quality content,” it has a whole different meaning, but wouldn't get the clicks.
But Apple isn't spending $1 billion per year on content. They're spending way more than that. Over $20 billion spent since TV+ launched in 2019 means Apple has spent an average of around $5 billion per year.

Apple TV+ launched in 2019. Since then, the company has spent over $20 billion to build an impressive library of original content, Bloomberg reported earlier this year. Yet, despite a highly regarded library of shows and movies with big names in acting and directing, Apple TV+ only garnered 0.3 percent of US screen viewing time in June 2024, per Nielsen.

In July, Bloomberg aptly underscored how minimally competitive Apple TV+ is, writing: "Apple TV+ generates less viewing in one month than Netflix does in one day."

Also, for those complaining that this is a waste of time, money and effort when Apple should be focusing on getting Apple Intelligence to work...you do realize that the company consists of more than one person, right?

It’s just kind of hilarious that we can’t have a new mini iPhone because it doesn’t make enough money whereas we have to be OK with them literally losing $1 billion a year on TV nonsense

Plus, if The Information is a dodgy company, would Bloomberg Media partner up with them?

First of all, I called the report dodgy, not the company, because of all the reasons I gave. Also, are we talking about the same Bloomberg, the dodgy one that never retracted from or produced one shred of evidence regarding their completely wrong „Big Hack“ story about surreptitious “phone home” chips on Supermicro computer components?

Where's the love for all their other shows? I mean I know they probably do a lot for Ted Lasso, but For All Mankind, Silo, Shrinking, and Mythic Quest are all awesome.

that keyboard is cool! I have the MT3 Dasher keycaps, they're very similar to the ones used on the keyboard

It's a Data General 6053 (Dasher D2) terminal with a trackball spliced in place of the number pad. The D2 was introduced in 1977, same year as the Apple II.
Interesting, I knew those had a 70s vibe but wasn't sure if there was a real product which looked like that!
