Why would they release a new Mac Pro and then immediately preview the next variant...?

Have you never heard of the Osbourne Effect...?!?
Because the Max and Pro variants might be only a month out from release. So they might take pre-orders but they will still call it a sneak peek at early benchmarks. Or maybe they'll treat it more like they did with the new iPhone's camera Deep Fusion which was a sneak peek at upcoming advanced camera features. Apple creates the narrative so they can get away with labeling almost anything a "peek" into the future products or features. It won't be something as big as an AR or VR headset because let's face it, past sneak peeks at future new hardware products like trash can Mac Pro and Air Power have not gone well for them.

How's the koolaid? Apple only allowing this to be viewed on iOS devices will fuel the belief that iOS devices have something special that lets them do AR.

The cheeky use of "peek" instead of "peak" tells me that they're going to preview a future product — a sneak peek of something they're working on. The colorful AR logo Apple created gives that illusion. Perhaps we'll get a preview of the AR glasses? Or perhaps since it's paired with "performance" a look at the future Mac Pro. This would be in addition to the aforementioned products (iPhone SE, iPad Air, 13" MacBook Pro).
its the Mac Pro + iMac Pro I think as they are the performance models and the ones that are missing in the lineup.

Headset will be WWDC, as it needs the developers on board.

not true!!

In addition to adding the Peek Performance event to its webpage, Apple has also uploaded a placeholder video to YouTube, where the event will be livestreamed.

Agree that this is either a first look at Apple's AR glasses or new bigger iMacs... or iPads Air (although I hope not as that would be very boring by comparison)

Since Apple underlined the idea that Pro Macs are still Space Grey and Silver with the M1 Max/Pro MacBooks Pro, then there's almost no chance the focus of this event is on a new MacBook Pro, iMac Pro or any kind of Pro product.

The emphasis on the separate, bold colors of the "Macintosh rainbow" in the invite usually means we're getting a new range of colored products.

The idea of a new, bigger iMac launching also works with the wordplay on “peek” instead of "peak", possibly referring to the new display that's either bigger (than a previous model) or bigger and better and is probably coupled with something that delivers "peak performance" in terms of CPU too. So it's a double entendre.

My best bet is a 27"-32" iMac that is overall much more powerful with an M2 chip, maybe close in performance to the M1 Max/Pro MacBooks Pro.

But the iMac idea kinda falls apart being that Apple wouldn't show these colors on a black background if the products in question are new, bigger iMacs with white bezels.

A better match between colors and black bezels are iPads Air. So maybe this is just a new range of iPads Air with A15 chips, 5G for cellular models, and coming in a range of more saturated colors, like we get on the standard iPhones 12 and 13? I actually think this is the most likely scenario. Maybe they're also updating the displays, then the "peek" fits. Idk

Than again, the marketing and launches of iPads Air has also always had white backgrounds and this one is black.. so that doesn't quite fit either.

Maybe this is steering iPad Air in a more iPhone 12/13 direction in terms of color options and with the addition of 5G and away from the desaturated metallic of the 2020 Air? However, iPads Air don't have glass backs so it would be hard to get them to match the 12/13 look.

peek, and "later this year" as in Dec 31st... They have done something similar to that before.

Tasty :) I don’t think it’s anything special, just more that Google likely doesn’t want to support .reality files on Android. I’d imagine a third party could create a player if they wanted, though.

Longshot, but could the lack of green have to do with green screens, and green not showing in green screen scenarios?
That's actually a good point -The color scheme here matches Apple's usual "Macintosh Rainbow" with the exception of green.

For what other reason would green be missing?

Notably, none of the colors seen have any substantial amount of green in them, no semi-green blue or darker yellow.

Sorry, that’s a miss. They were just too embarrassed to use peak. They did all this work on the M2 and realized that it’s actually slower than than the M1. Apple realizes that they have peaked as a company and will actually start a steady decline. This is symbolized by the increasingly smaller Apple logos as you go deeper into the graphic (representing moving into the future).

I used to get really excited about these events, blocking out time on my work calendar so I could be at my desk and watch the live stream. :) Now I usually wait until they're over and then read the summary here or at Engadget.

I'm always interested in new Mac hardware; less so the phones, anymore.
I totally get that -It's very, very seldom that Apple launches anything truly exciting, in a new product category or a new product altogether that isn't already sold by another brand.

My biggest hope for Apple's 2022 is Apple AR glasses and that it's truly a new, market-leading AR experience.

I always looked forward to the Steve Jobs presentations.

It's great! That "something special" is the curiosity/imagination/creativity/drive/risk-taking/etc that the other companies, and some people here, don't possess.

The other part, at least for me, was observing Steve’s nuances, and as great as Tim is, he doesn’t have the energy of a founder. If Steve was Giotto then Tim is Alegria.
