It was a clumsy product, not surprised to see it go. iCloud is much easier to manage and explain to your mom.

Clumsy as it is, there are people who use it and enjoy it. My husband is one example. I’ve never like Photostream since I can’t edit photos in Photostream. I like the ability to manipulate the images on any Apple device and then eventually store them offline.

You do realize that you can back up with Google photos or Amazon Photos, right? Also, there are apps like dropbox where you can use them instead of iCloud to store your files.

If you do that, then you don’t even need to pay for iCloud. Of course you have to pay for Google photos or dropbox. If you go over there minimum allowed for the free plans
I can back up my iOS device on Google, Amazon, Backblaze, etc? I can do a system level backup? Where it saves app settings, storage, messages, etc?

This is what I’m getting at; and where my frustration with Apple and the sycophants on here.

If you want an online device backup, your ONLY CHOICE is iCloud. That’s it.

So when Tim Apple is jerking us all around with paltry data limits, and high costs of local and cloud storage, don’t talk to me about how “great” this company is to be offering anything at all. The competition is doing better. Do better, Apple.

I really hope this is a sign more iCloud storage is coming soon. In 2023, 2TB is not enough.
I scanned below, but I didn't see this mentioned in this thread: you can have 4 TB right now if you're willing to pay enough for it, by combining a 2 TB Apple One subscription with a 2 TB iCloud+ subscription. The process is janky, but I've done it for clients. Assuming you've already got the 2 TB iCloud+ subscription, you then also subscribe to Apple One. Hooray, you now have 4 TB. Except, boo, after 30 days your Apple One trial is over, at which point the iCloud+ subscription is canceled, reverting you to 2 TB; at this point, you resubscribe to iCloud+. Now you have 4 TB ongoing. This is all detailed in this Apple support article .

That definitely sounds janky. Maybe Apple will announce 4TB next month?

No, you can use the free iCloud back up for that or use your Windows computer. Can you back up system level settings on an android phone on some other cloud?

You could sync with your PC/Mac to backup your phone. This has been the case since the beginning.
Edit: someone else said it first 👇

Photo Stream doesn't count against iCloud storage. It's obvious why apple is doing this. That being said, very few people probably use it anymore.
It probably doesn’t help that they don’t allow new users to use it anymore. This was a great feature for someone who doesn’t want to buy their stupid Photos service.

Friendly reminder, if you have Amazon prime you get unlimited photo storage at full resolution, videos are not included

I think she still can…

Nope. I tried calling from my iPhone 14 and she says she doesn't hear any ringing.

Plus AT&T shut off 3g so she can't even access cellular data on her phone anymore and had to move her sim to a flip phone provided by AT&T. Should she still be able to access 3G on an iPhone 4? I don't think so.

Yeah I tested it on my 4s on iOS 6 and my Apple ID signin is freaking out, it’s also jailbroken so… 🤷‍♂️

This was a cool feature before iCloud Photo Library came along; I loved seeing all my photos on my Mac automatically without having to transfer them.

However, iCloud Photo Library really does make the feature a bit redundant. The only issue I can see is some very old devices losing access to the latest photos you've taken.

If I could get iCloud Photos just to sync the most recent 2000 photos, that would be great. But I’ve got several terabytes of photos. Completely different beast.

I took an informal poll of the tech workers in my vicinity. All of them are using it. Not scientific of course but what on social media is?

Oh, great. Not only do I now have to upgrade my iCloud storage to 2TB to be able to store *all* my photos (since I can't tell it to only do a subset, as far as I know), but my internet data cap will be *killed* as my computer tries to upload everything at once.

Talk about an expensive change :(

Yep, Apple has a nice habit of punishing people who are on the wrong side of the digital divide.

In the announcement, Apple says "Moving forward, iCloud Photos is the best way to keep the photos and videos you take up to date across all your devices and safely stored in iCloud. "

And then when you click on the iCloud Photos link in the support document, it says this-

"If you need more iCloud storage
When you sign up for iCloud, you automatically get 5GB of free storage. If you need more space, and access to premium features, you can upgrade to iCloud+."

I mean come on, they want people to buy more storage.
Apple really wants that 99¢. Hope my family can survive this hardship.
