Now will you people start to believe it?! There has been absolutely no evidence of a redesigned iPhone 5. But a tonne of evidence for a similar iPhone 4S. It is and always was going to follow the same pattern as before, being 3G, 3GS, 4G, 4GS, 5G, 5GS. There's not going to be an iPhone 5 this year.

So I guess cases, design leaks, etc. don't count as evidence? haha
P.S. Based on your pattern the iPhone 4S would never exist, just so you know.

Is it that hard to believe that some people simply enjoy Apple products personally and have no interest in impressing anyone?

I LOVE my Apple products, they simply work like no other. But even Apple themselves acknowledge the prestige and vanity that goes with it; I mean Apple were the first to light up their logo on their laptops. I know Sony and Dell tried to immitate but no one was impressed.

Apple is really focused on iOS 5 at the moment which looks like it will be best release of iOS to date. I just hope all features are compatible with the iPhone 4.

They'll probably have a feature that is only compatible with the new iPhone and make a BS reason like because of the need of more RAM or processor speed.

I'll echo many statements here I'm sure, but:

1. 16 months since last hardware refresh
2. Case manufacturers have invested serious money in the slightly larger and tapered form-factor
3. Black-out dates for vacations and time off at Apple, ATT, and Sprint around Oct. 14/15 time frame (this alone confirms said device will have a significant desireability factor - be it with the design and/or the plans being offered with it)

There are tons of other speculation out there that would say new device (or not), but to me, these three alone tell me this will not be a simple spec-bump on the hardware.

Number 1 is proof of nothing.
Number 3 is proof of a device release, but not something specific re: form factor changes.

Cases leaking is evidence. It may be weak evidence, but to ignore it completely is foolish.

This man understands... and there haven't been any new case leaks, because it will still look the same. New hardware every 2 cycles, and refresh on the odd cycles in between. So we are up to the refresh cycle now.

1. my guess is july 2012 we'll see the refreshed iphone 5.
2. it could be for the new ipod touch?
3. perhaps for apple the launch of iphone 4S on tuesday is considered a very big deal to them?

If WSJ reported that the 4S would only be available in Asian markets couldnt that be why all these leaks of 4S parts are comming from.....wait for it......Asia?

My prediction for Tuesday is 2 new models and one will be an i5.

Maybe the leaked parts are coming from from asia because... wait for it... the iphone is assembled in asia?

The rumored Assistant feature better completely redefine how we interact with smartphones if the design of the iPhone is essentially unchanged.
Short of that, this update will only strengthen Android.
It is possible that Apple is on a two-year design cycle (since the 3G).
Next year may see the complete redesign. This is more likely given the impending move to 4G LTE next year. We'll see. I cannot imagine any other tech company having that long a design horizon, but this is Apple.

Perhaps there's still a small chance that the iPhone4S will have a slightly bigger screen due to a smaller bezel?

Design cycle

Product pipelines can last two years, but this design was probably begun before the release of the iPhone 3GS. If the iPhone continues as a slightly modified iPhone 4S, then we are looking at more than a year of design work and over 2 years of production. Can you imagine any other smartphone manufacturer selling the same phone (in form factor) for over two years.
Look at the aforementioned iPhone 3GS. This is one of the reasons Apple is killing other tech companies. Their R&D is lean and effective. Nokia, not so much. Moreover, Motorola, Samsung, and others are constantly changing designs.

Has anyone else noticed that in all of these 4S threads there's at least one person who says something along the lines of "Well, it's time to face the facts. It's looking more and more likely that there won't be an iPhone 5 this year.", followed by a :( or the like? Just noticing a pattern.

lol this would actually make me happy. I wouldn't be tempted to buy a new phone and spend money :D

They said that about FaceTime -- how many people actually use FaceTime (other than testing it out when they got their iPhone 4)?

This model allows iPhone to reduce the amount of models they need to make since it would work on AT&T, Verizon and Sprint, allowing them to lower the total cost since they wont have to manufacture any CDMA only models.

There will be an iPhone 4S and and iPhone 5. 16 months for a spec bump? Do you people really doubt Apple that much?

How big of a let down would it be if the new iphone was simply a speed bump and a better camera?

It would be so lame and far behind the competition. But... This seems to be the likely outcome.

That doesn't bug me at all..

What bugs me is that it seems for a 2nd year they haven't bumped up storage...

Others actually did. Apple insider, 9 to 5 mac, macrumors, digitimes, allthingsd and several others reported on it. I for one believe this report and am going to laugh my ass off come next Tusday, you're all going to be in for a big surprise, haha.

I follow both 9to5Mac and MacRumors. I remember the posting of the Case-Mate cases but that Apple employee story wasn't seen anywhere.

Besides the fact that now that I look back at the news story it's pretty clear that what he had said about the Apple employee said nothing but that there will be an 'iPhone 5' which means absolutely jack ****.

iPhone = 1st gen
iPhone 3G = 2nd gen
iPhone 3GS = 3rd gen
iPhone 4 = 4th gen
iPhone 5 OR 4S = 5th gen (believe it or not they can name a internal spec upgrade iPhone the iPhone 5 if they want)
iPhone 6 OR 5S = 6th gen

etc.

The name means absolutely nothing other than the generation and what came before it and the fact that you people feel the need to differentiate 4S and 5 is really quite amusing.

And with that said you're going to laugh your ass off on Tuesday because you believe a report that simply mentioned a name that I just stated doesn't matter?

I really don't care if this new iPhone is a spec upgrade or a redesign. I'm buying it either way. If you only want a larger screen and they don't introduce one with those extra .5 inches you're begging for then don't let the door hit you on the way out.

Just a thought...

How does this sound:

iPhone 4 8 GB
iPhone 4S 16 GB
iPhone 5 32-64 GB

I don't think it Will happen, but it would offer consumers more choice without ruining the sales.

I realy had my hopes up for a redesign or at least a bigger screen. I still do! It's not over until the fat lady sings...:):):D

Come on man...FaceTime is iPhone 4/iPad2 to iPhone4/iPad2 only. Even without this fact, comparing these two features is moronic. You made another post about Assistant recently that is moronic as well, but I didn't comment on that one.

Looks like I won't be sending Apple any more money this year. I have little interest in a slightly refreshed iPhone 4 and absolutely no interest in a white iPod touch with the same lame specs as last year's model.

Unless we get a big surprise next week it's fairly clear that Apple believes they'll fare better by continuing along the existing path than by listening to forum posts advocating change. It's hard to argue with their success to date.

The only hesitation I have is those poll results showing 40% of people would purchase an iPhone 5 and only 15% would buy a 4S. Apple doesn't care if I don't want their stuff, but to lose the interest of of 72% of the people who say they want to buy your product looks like a disaster waiting to happen.

I agree, the name means nothing. But people are using the name 4s or 5 to describe in an easy way what kind of an update it Will be.
I see it this way...

iPhone 4 case with upgraded camera and processor = iPhone 4S
iPhone 4 case or Redesign with upgraded camera, processor and larger screen = iPhone 5

I think actually that most people care more about a larger screen than a redesign. That's just my opinion.

As shown by this post, Apple has succeeded in their mission to getting you and a lot of others hopeless about the iPhone 5. When it comes on Tuesday, you and a lot of others will be more likely to buy and/or more excited to buy. Welcome to the mind of a company as talented as Apple.
