For one, where did you come up w/ the N100 codename? You just made it up?

While there are tons of Google hits for N90, N92 and N94, I find nothing for N100.

I would lay down cash for an iPhone 5, but unlikely for an iPhone 4S. I think people (and AAPL stock price) will be very disappointed if there's no new form-factor iPhone 5 with a 3.7" (or greater) screen.

There's even an N97, suspected to be the iPhone Nano....but never any hint of an N100. Someone else made it up in another post (I think I recall who) and this guy just copied it.

You guys are naive. That **** matters to everyone, you guys included...you just don't realize it. Why do people drool over nice new cars? Why do people buy new trendy clothes? This is no different.

those things only matter to lame people who have no self worth

Actually, no. I've got major health problems and I know about priorities. The only reason I have an iPhone is because I enjoy using it and I enjoy the aesthetic design and it brings me some happiness. I couldn't care less if people know about me having it. In fact, I usually go out of my way not to be showy with my phone because the last thing I need is someone to snatch it. I am still using a non-unibody white MacBook as my main computer and have an old Compaq crap-puter as my home's desktop hub. I also do not own a single piece of trendy clothing and am perfectly comfortable in public with sweatpants. Try again.

Yeah, I somehow find that hard to believe. If he was credible then this story would have at least relayed onto other tech sites.

Others actually did. Apple insider, 9 to 5 mac, macrumors, digitimes, allthingsd and several others reported on it. I for one believe this report and am going to laugh my ass off come next Tusday, you're all going to be in for a big surprise, haha.

I still think Apple wouldn't spend 16 precious months to make only an iPhone 4S. The iPhone 5 has gotta be hiding somewhere.

True, but they could quite easily have spent those 16 months trying to make a new form factor, not been able to iron out the kinks, and abandoned it temporarily, resorting to a backup plan of a spec-bumped iPhone 4.

For all we know, they might release an iPhone 5 early in the new year, and this could just be a stopgap to have something new out for the holidays.

I'm convinced there will be a redesigned iPhone and a speedbumped iPhone 4.

If not, and only an iPhone 4S, then Amazon wins the month in geek.

If there is a N90A (N90 was the old iPhone 4 code) and now an N94 showing up in Apple's inventory system, wouldn't that mean an iPhone 4S (N90A) and iPhone 5 (N94)? Granted that doesn't mean squat for the actual design of the phones, but if it were only a modest spec bump, I wouldn't think they would have a totally different code name (N94)? At least I hope!

I've thought about this myself and it seems possible. It's also my biggest fear: I'm off contract with a 27-month-old phone and I want to get something new now. If I pick up an iPhone 4S/whatever next month, I'm not going to be happy if Apple whips out the grand new revision that I was really waiting for in Feb/Mar 2012. If they do have such plans, I hope they at least make it known -- even though it's in their best (business) interest not to.

It's hiding until 2012.

When it becomes the iPhone 6, because the iPhone 5 can't launch in 2012 when the 5th generation iPhone, if it is indeed the 4S, launches next month.

The N94 pictured on this very site looked identical to a white iPhone 4 and depicted the A5 chip. So, for now, it's safe to say the N94 is the iPhone 4S and the iPhone 4 8GB model is the N90A.

My two cents

Apple sells the number one and number two most popular smartphones in the US, the iphone 4 and 3gs respectively. https://www.macrumors.com/2011/08/22/iphone-4-and-3gs-rank-as-best-selling-u-s-smartphones/Making the "cheap" iphone a HUGE market and one that Apple will take very seriously. They are not going to produce the 3gs any longer, which makes the iphone 4 the obvious replacement for the, extremly popular, low end iphone. However, there are some issues with simply slapping a lower price on the current iphone 4. Of course there were the issues with the antenna and the white iphone, but also the cost of producing several different variations; cmda, gsm, white, black, 16gb, 32gb. They need to reduce the number of variations to reduce production costs and free up plant resources for the new iphone. The changes need to include: making the iphone 4 a world phone, two colors and available in, probably, one lower capacity (8 or 16gb), combined with making minor cost reducing improvements to the lines. This will free up resources and allow for minor spec bumps(A5) while reducing the production cost of the phone. Now that they have redesigned the iphone 4 into a cheaper world phone they need to identify it differently than the current iphone 4; hello iphone 4S. People are way more likely to buy the faster redesigned iphone 4S for $99 or $400 unsubsidized, then buy the current iphone 4 used from craigslist or ebay or where ever. Apple will then sell the the new iphone 5 with a 100% redesigned body and even better specs(A5, more ram, bigger screen, better camera, 64gb) for $199 or more, and they will maintain the number 1 and 2 spots easily. Just a guess...

How would people feel about an aluminium uni-body iphone 4S/5 with an edge to edge 4" screen?

I drooled on my keyboard a little bit...

However it is looking more and more like same form factor 4S... usually by now we would have at least seen a part leaked... but all the parts and solid leaks seem to point to same design 4S

I am still holding out hope though... I hope Apple was just being super secretive after last year's bar fiasco.

I know people gave you a -3 but I actually agree with you. Whether we want to be honest or not, a bit part of ANY Apple product is the prestige around carrying it. Whether it being the iPod, Mac Book Air, iPhone or even iPad. The iPad is not the first tablet, but to me it is the first mainstream tablet as it took the dorkiness of carrying around a keyboard-less PC and made it the coolest thing in the world.

Is it that hard to believe that some people simply enjoy Apple products personally and have no interest in impressing anyone?

All signs point to new hardware/form-factor

I'll echo many statements here I'm sure, but:

1. 16 months since last hardware refresh
2. Case manufacturers have invested serious money in the slightly larger and tapered form-factor
3. Black-out dates for vacations and time off at Apple, ATT, and Sprint around Oct. 14/15 time frame (this alone confirms said device will have a significant desireability factor - be it with the design and/or the plans being offered with it)

There are tons of other speculation out there that would say new device (or not), but to me, these three alone tell me this will not be a simple spec-bump on the hardware.

Why is everyone parroting iPhone 4S? It will never be called that! The only way is to mark a speed-bump in an iPhone 4 that is re-released along with an iPhone 5.

First phone: iPhone
2nd phone: iPhone 3G (to show it had 3G instead of 2G - if it was iPhone 2, then people would think that it was a 2G phone)
3rd phone: iPhone 3GS (so Apple could could keep the number 3 in the 3rd phone to play catchup with numbering schemes)

4th phone iPhone 4

5th phone: Will be the iPhone 5.

Because there is actual (?) proof that the new iPhone will be called 4S, and not a single evidence pointing to iPhone 5.

I hate the 4S naming as well, but 4S is more likely than 5 at this point.

I love when people say this. There has been evidence of both because they are purely rumors and there have been a lot of rumors pointing to each.

There never was an iPhone 5!!!!

Now will you people start to believe it?! There has been absolutely no evidence of a redesigned iPhone 5. But a tonne of evidence for a similar iPhone 4S. It is and always was going to follow the same pattern as before, being 3G, 3GS, 4G, 4GS, 5G, 5GS. There's not going to be an iPhone 5 this year.

If this pattern exists, why didn't they do an iPhone S after the original iPhone? You have to have more than one occurrence of something to consider it a pattern.

Apple is really focused on iOS 5 at the moment which looks like it will be best release of iOS to date. I just hope all features are compatible with the iPhone 4.

Regarding the case mock ups that we've seen for the iPhone 5...

didn't we see similar things with iPad 2 cases and that design was true to the cases that were leaked?
