Apple are not fools.

There will be an iPhone 5.

...or at least I hope. :(

There will be an iphone 5. WSJ broke the story months ago.

IPHONE 3GS discontinued

IPHONE 4S (N94) is an iphone 4 for Asian markets that updates the innards with a dual core processor and CDMA/GSM/HSPA in the iphone 4 chassis. Currently there is no official apple phone for many markets in Asia (China in particular) but the 4S/4+/4.5 will attempt to break into those markets. It will not be available officially in NA/EU markets.

IPHONE 4 (n90/N92) will be bumped down to the $100 mark and will take the 3GS' place as the budget iphone. Verizon will sell their remaining n92s, and ATT will sell its remaining N90s and will be restocked with N90A phones-- which are iphones with A) An antenna quick-fix and B) and an integrated CDMA/GSM chip. The 5, 4S, and the new iteration of 4s will all be world phones so Apple can stop manufacturing and supplying two different phones for two different bands. Verizon really threw a wrench in their plans and their new IPHONE 4 will be N90 and N92 become just N90A

IPHONE 5 (N100) will be revealed on Tuesday. Not much is known about it, but it will not be carrier-specific. From now on, all ATT phones will have a singular carrier architecture, including the revision of the iphone 4.

In the Americas and Europe, it will go from 3GS and 4, to 4 and 5

Apple generally likes to set expectations low (financially at least). I am cautiously optimistic that, that's exactly what Apple's doing here.

They're making everyone think it'll only be a 4S, or not that big of an upgrade. Then... at the day of the event the media walks in mostly thinking it'll be 4S and Assistant related Keynote. But out of no where, they'll unveil the iPhone 5, as the world's thinnest smartphone, and set the media (both tech and other mainstream) on fire with Apple iPhone 5 stories. Boom, Apple smashed through expectations yet again, as it does every financial quarter.

Wishful thinking, but I will be in utter shock and disbelief if only 4S shows up on Oct 4th. I'm still holding out hope.

An iPhone 4S with a speed bump and improved camera isn't going to compel me to buy. I skipped the 3GS (iPhone --> iPhone 3G --> iPhone 4) and I intend to skip the iPhone 4S if this is in fact the only option. And based on what I've seen here I'm assuming that this is the case. Lots of info about an upgraded iPhone 4, not so much on an iPhone 5. My money is on no iPhone 5 this year.

What isn't being said here (or at least that I've seen) is that the Apple experience is all about the OS - it's not about having the best hardware. Apple's released products have routinely been at or slightly behind the curve of bleeding edge technology (i.e. camera, 3G, etc.), so it's not really that big of a surprise if they just release a spec bumped iPhone 4.

Doesn't anyone remember the previous keynote where Steve said the return rate of the iPhone 4 was less than that of the iPhone 3GS? So my all their metrics, it's pretty clear they don't feel antennagate was an issue (even if most of us did).

The case manufacturers producing cases based on prototypes is nothing new - the first cases out usually stand to make a ton of money, so it's a gamble by the companies.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see the iPhone 5 that MR keeps posting, but I won't be too surprised if they don't release a newly designed version. I will agree that it would be strange to go so long without some sort of major change, but that's also happened before (not with the iPhone).

It's all about the OS......

It's all about the OS......

I totally agree.. but from a business standpoint you have people who know absolutely nothing about cell phones (example would be the amount of people who thought the iPhone 4 actually meant 4G network). So you still have to make hardware updates regardless of how awesome the OS is for the people who are novice cell phone / non-techy people. It sucks, but it is true... and Apple's iOS is something that is perfect for novice users from a marketing standpoint since it is so easy to use.

and this information comes from where? and how do you know so much about iPhone 5 and the rest of the world doesen't? citing the WSJ? even though they predicted verizon incorrectly for a year? hmmmm

The fact that there is no physical evidence means nothing. There have been plenty of Apple products released without physical evidence. All we knew of the iPad 2 was the case leak.

If they do indeed have three models, it doesn't have to be complicated-$49 iPhone 4 (one size), $99 4S (one size), $199/$299 5. That would be less configurations than the iPad.

I don't believe we had unsubstantiated speculation that was refuted by physical evidence with the iPad 2 though. Cases don't count.

In my opinion three distinct models for a single product is pretty complicated. With the iPads, they aren't selling iPads, iPad 2s and iPad 2 Plus/3's all at once, are they? They will likely continue to sell the newest model primarily while selling the previous model on the cheap to liquidate inventory and increase market share. Same with the phone.

What no one supporting the teardrop 5 has addressed is how Apple will deal with a larger screen - you either lose the Retina Display selling point by increasing the size but keeping pixels constant or fragment the apps by increasing size and pixels, requiring app redesigns. For Apple it's either screw yourself or screw the developers. Although it may be inevitable.

One argument I cannot understand is the "I skipped the current generation, so Apple must be releasing a substantially upgraded (redesigned) phone this year". I know this not what's exactly mentioned in your post, but it triggered the thought because others have posted the exact thing over and over.

Every year there will be people who skip the upgrade. Does this mean Apple is expected to release a redesigned iPhone each refresh?

The iMac stays the same for about 2-3 years during this time it gets up dated with spec bumps same for MBP & MBA why do people want/expect a redesigned iPhone each year?

But the iMac went from 17" and 20"... to 24"... and now 27"

Clearly Apple sees the need of a larger screen on the desktop... all we're asking for is a slightly bigger screen on the best-selling phone in the world.

This is one direction the rumors and leaked information points, but there is still no strong evidence of an iPhone 5 launching this year. I REALLY hope everything you said is true though. My wallet is ready.

I have an iPhone 4, and I will buy the iPhone 4S.

I think the iPhone 4S will look to a lot of people as a weak update. They will say "I'm not buying the iPhone 4S, there is a negligible difference between the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S"

People said the same thing about the 3G to 3GS update. But anyone who owned a 3G and then picked up a 3GS knew that was completely untrue. The difference in speed was night and day.

The iPhone 4 is a fast phone, no doubt about it. But I have a feeling the iPhone 4S will make it seem slow.

iPhone 4/iPhone 4s/iPhone Pro?

Just a thought here. May not be this release but I am sure they have considered something of the sorts.

That's pretty sad to give that much of a crap what people think.

So alls u care about is feeling cool cuz u have the new iPhone!? Most people don't care!!!

You guys are naive. That **** matters to everyone, you guys included...you just don't realize it. Why do people drool over nice new cars? Why do people buy new trendy clothes? This is no different.

iPhone 4s is a conspiracy set by by Apple so that the actual product (iPhone 5) does not get leaked again, like the iphone 4 :p

Wow!

People like u is why this world is so screwed up & the way it is today! Sure it cool to have tha new iPhone but there r so much more important things in life then how cool u look w one! I just think our priorities r entirely different! To each his own...

Yet, here you are. Pot or Kettle?

Another damned phone made of fragile glass ...
It doesn't look like glass to me. More like molded plastic with all of the protrusions and such.

If WSJ reported that the 4S would only be available in Asian markets couldnt that be why all these leaks of 4S parts are comming from.....wait for it......Asia?

My prediction for Tuesday is 2 new models and one will be an i5.

I hope they do the entire announcement of the new iPhone with iPhone 5 internals in an iPhone 4 body and at the end say, "one more thing.... it will look like this." and show off the new design.

Though, with all of the evidence and the picture in the original post of this thread I'm not too optimistic of that. This would not be the first time of an internals upgrade only. They do it with their computers, they have done it with the phone. There should really be no surprise if they do an internals only update.

Many of the people waiting for a new iPhone are waiting with a 3GS due to the contract cycles, so whether they get a beefed up iPhone 4 or an iPhone 5, they will be happy.
