I bet Apple is laughing their asses after reading this thread and all the previous threads claiming no iPhone 5.

Calling them sadists wouldn't be appropriate, but do hell with that.

Sadists.

When the initial disappointment wears off that we aren't getting a new design phone, people will realize they still have awesome phones when iOS 5 is up and running, whether its on an existing 4 or new 4s.

Seems like the real redesign is coming when they are ready to roll out the LTE version. We shall see, but I'm anxiously awaiting the 4th.

Apple could definitely be throwing us for a loop. They might have planned this "4S" showing up in the database so that people will think it's the only new iPhone coming out...or it could really be the only new iPhone coming out. :(

What the hell have their tech people been doing for the last 16 months? This phone could've been released alongside the iPad 2 -- all the internals are identical.

Why should they have done that?

When the iPad 2 was released, they were finally making enough iPhone 4 to meet demand.

iPad 2 was supply restrained for months. If a new iPhone with the same internals as the iPad 2 was released simultaneous, can you imagine the logistics nightmare of having enough components?

With scant evidence of a redesign, the prospect of a totally new design this year was simply wishful thinking. If the iPhone 4 currently doesn't meet your needs and an A5, better camera, more ram, and better battery life fail to meet your needs, then thankfully there are other phones out there.

I can't tell whether the complaining over this 4S/5 debate is merely the same vocal minority that has trashed the iPod, iPad, Kindle Fire, etc despite their given and potential success, or whether this is symbolic in proving everyone who thinks that mobile phones are really platforms or just trinkets that people switch between on a whim.

Situation 2: Apple releases only a 4S.
- We all go to ATT or Best Buy or wherever and get the Samsung Galaxy S2 on October 4th.
LOL Thanks for the laugh. Ignoring your "America" centric view point, why would people all of a sudden switch platforms leaving behind their investment of apps, TV shows and movies?

Get real for a moment here. All platforms have a certain amount of stickiness once owners actually "buy" apps but Apple seems to have the biggest ecosystem to retain user loyalty.

I feel that if this is the case, then Apple has their priorities completely wrong. The iPhone is worth half of Apple's business, and if the world's #1 tech company can't come up with a 4" retina display, and a new and ergonomic form factor (without glass), after a year and a half, then it's just pathetic.

I cannot believe how arrogant Apple would be to release just a spec-bumped iPhone 4. I honestly want the next iPhone to fail, I want Apple to get major competition for consumer smartphone experience. Maybe then they'll finally deliver..

Guys. Just wait 5 more days! Thats it! These rumors for iPhone 4S and iPhone 5 have been going back and forth for a long time and it's annoying! Just stop with the rumors and wait for Tuesday. There will be no iPhone 4S. Apple likes to be competitive so there HAS to be an iPhone 5! 

Hate to inform you, but the rumors only get more intense the week before the announcement. Perhaps you need to step away for a bit.

Oh, and there seems to be evidence that is completely contrary to your opinion. Sorry.

Could be that people are just more tight lipped about the new new iPhone. Then Apple announces it as one more thing and fanboys go into convulsions. A slightly changed iPhone 4 would be a good diversion. /wishfulthinking

This is what I'm hoping for.

It ain't over till the skinny CEO speaks.

an iPhone 4S release is sure.. and obvious..
But an iPhone 5 release would be apreciated by so many smartphone-users that are waiting for the next big thing.
Although it might be possible that Apple won't be able to release the iPhone 5 just yet, and we'll all have to wait till 2012 Q1 ..

I'm still on my BB BOLD 9700 and it sucks big time every day more and more, but I'm waiting for that next big thing!

weak sauce.

iOS 5 will be enough to hold me over until the real redesign and LTE.

Speak with your wallet people.

How big of a let down would it be if the new iphone was simply a speed bump and a better camera?

It would be so lame and far behind the competition. But... This seems to be the likely outcome.

Agreed, but the 3GS was essentially the same thing. Better camera, faster processor, voice control was added, etc, but that was about it. The main difference today is that there wasn't the same Android competition in 2009. Disappointing if this is true and will be holding out for a future iPhone with LTE.

The debate is entirely over the inadequacy of the iPhone 4 design as it currently stands -- internals are whatever. The current internals of a 3GS run iOS 5 just fine.

The exterior NEEDS a redesign -- a move away from poor antenna design, away from fragile shattering glass used in the construction, and to a larger screen to compete with current offerings from competitors.

Yeah it's looking more and more unlikely that there will be an iPhone 5.
But maybe that's what Apple wants us to believe. Make us think there is only one and keep the iPhone 5 a SUPER secret and then unveil it with immense surprise and ashonishment....

Well at least that's what I hope.

I love Apple. I've had 3 of the 4 iPhones that exist, but I'm not going to just sit around and wait for them to make something awesome. If they release a 4S type of device, I'm going to go by the GS2 and use that until Apple gets their stuff together and decides to release something worth something. When that point comes, I'll sell my GS2 and wait till I have an early upgrade to get that iPhone.

I will always love Apple and their products, but I just need something new and different, and if they aren't going to give it to me, I know Samsung will.
