What's funny is that the iPhone4s have been selling like hotcakes. Why wouldn't they speed bump an existing design and rest on their laurels a bit? They'll still sell and this gives them more time to work on the next real iphone release for next year when my 2 year contract is up.

It is all about me, don't you know.
yeah even if 4s is the only product for this yr it will be sold well cause apple is "the" brand.. but i wont be one of them for sure loll i didnt wait this long to just see sum spec bumps -.-

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 5_0 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Mobile/9A5313e)

:( why can't I haz iPhone 5

I don't know what it is, but I just cannot get over releasing just a 4S (A5, maybe more RAM, 8MP camera, etc.) instead of a radically different iPhone 5.

It just doesn't make sense- the increased time between the last release, the case designs, the fact that this is Tim Cook's 'first' big release as CEO, etc.

But if i am wrong.. Heres to hope that it at least has a bigger screen.. 3.7-3.8 i can live with that lol

if its only a 4S and if Assistant only works on the 4S there's going to be a lot of disappointed people, for many people outer cosmetic changes are needed to justify the upgrade, they will basically think they are buying the same phone

I CAN'T believe the upgrade will be similar to that of the 3GS. Please no.
The 3gs was a pretty big update..... just cause it wasn't a new design doesn't mean it didn't have new features.... i mean it had a lot more to offer than the 3g did when it first came out but people ignore it cause they want a new design over features? Don't get me wrong, i would like a new design but just cause it doesn't doesn't mean the phone won't have a big update.....

Why is everyone parroting iPhone 4S? It will never be called that! The only way is to mark a speed-bump in an iPhone 4 that is re-released along with an iPhone 5.

First phone: iPhone
2nd phone: iPhone 3G (to show it had 3G instead of 2G - if it was iPhone 2, then people would think that it was a 2G phone)
3rd phone: iPhone 3GS (so Apple could could keep the number 3 in the 3rd phone to play catchup with numbering schemes)

4th phone iPhone 4

5th phone: Will be the iPhone 5.

Because there is actual (?) proof that the new iPhone will be called 4S, and not a single evidence pointing to iPhone 5.

I hate the 4S naming as well, but 4S is more likely than 5 at this point.

People will still buy the iPhone 4S, it's undeniable that people will pay anything for the Apple brand.

But, it will leave many geeks and people that actually care about hardware disappointed.

The iPhone 3G needed a power boost far more than the iPhone 4 does. It couldn't even record videos, and had the same guts as the first iPhone. I'd say the i4 needs a bigger screen the same way the 3G needed more power.

So Apple is holding a press conference in Cupertino and closing down the biggest Apple store in London for a stream of the press conference just to show off a speed bump in the iPhone ?

Delicious..

Why is everyone getting so upset already? Just wait till the freaking event...and see what happens. Apple surprises...I still have faith that a brand new phone is coming.

There's something I'm having trouble figuring out. And it's not specifically you, most people in this thread so far are guilty of it. What exactly is it about a redesigned outer shell that makes enough of a difference to influence whether you stick with the platform or jump ship? Whether it looks new or it looks like an iPhone 4, the internals and upgrades are bound to be nearly identical. Why is everyone putting so much weight on just the appearance of the phone?

Because the iPhone 4 is a flawed design? Due to the antennagate, glass breaking, proximity sensor issues, ergonomic issues, the fact that consumer report couldn't recommend it etc.? Because a 3.5" screen is too small for the current smartphone industry?

Even if the next iPhone looks similar to the iPhone 4, i just want a rounded edge, no glass, and a bigger screen, that will do for me.

Maybe they will introduce the 4s and then right before it is over, one more thing, the iphone 5!!

It doesn't matter if there is a brand new iPhone 5 or just a revised iPhone 4S. People will still line-up and buy this thing by the millions. Apple knows they can't lose either way.

I feel that if this is the case, then Apple has their priorities completely wrong. The iPhone is worth half of Apple's business, and if the world's #1 tech company can't come up with a 4" retina display, and a new and ergonomic form factor (without glass), after a year and a half, then it's just pathetic.

I cannot believe how arrogant Apple would be to release just a spec-bumped iPhone 4. I honestly want the next iPhone to fail, I want Apple to get major competition for consumer smartphone experience. Maybe then they'll finally deliver..
Apple was always arrogant to put a 3.5" display which is "enough" for everybody. Same reason they are not ready to put widgets and flash on their devices. There is no doubt in my mind that Apple has got Uber Security measures for their unreleased devices but they don't have this much securities at Foxconn and other sites. You can't keep that tight security over a million devices. Thereby, if there would have been an iPhone 5, leaked parts would've surfaced already. But till now all we've got is Spec-bump iPhone 4. I don't know what these Case Manufacturers are thinking but Oh hell, let's wait for the damn Tuesday.

just standing back at this thread. i realized how spoiled and just horrible we are as a society of cell phone buffs. lol

The debate is entirely over the inadequacy of the iPhone 4 design as it currently stands -- internals are whatever. The current internals of a 3GS run iOS 5 just fine.

The exterior NEEDS a redesign -- a move away from poor antenna design, away from fragile shattering glass used in the construction, and to a larger screen to compete with current offerings from competitors.

I think the only party who has all of the proper information about whether or not the chassis needs a redesign is Apple. They are the ones who keep track of returns due to antenna issues; they are the ones who keep track of cracked glass panels; they are the ones who monitor complaints from customers about antennas, cracking, or screen size.

If Apple does not release a redesigned iPhone it should not be seen as an arrogant and lazy move that has the sole intention of pissing people off, but should be seen as a reaffirmation of the iPhone 4 design and months of feedback that they have received about the device.

Individuals may have perfectly acceptable reasons why they dislike the design, but is inherently anecdotal.

Why not? And it's not just a speed bump of a phone. It's discussion of all things iPhone and iOS as well as sales numbers and the (probable) introduction of Tim as Mr. Keynote.

Apple cant be that stupid to just release a speed bump after 16 months. If they want current iphone4 owners to upgrade they need to alter the design a little. A spec bump on the 3GS might have worked a few years ago but that was before Android took off.

I've been saying this in numerous threads and all I've gotten were votes down. We'd all be excited for a redesigned iPhone 5, but, you know, sorry to be a realist:

- Apple's business model is to discount the prior generation iPhones and make them the low-end offering.

Therefore, they will be offering the iPhone 4 as this year's low-end.

- Apple reserves the "S" suffix for internally IMPROVED devices, not for new low end models.

Meaning, people who suggested that the iPhone 4S would be a new low end offering are completely out of their minds. If anything, Apple would have released a new iPhone 5 along with the current iPhone 4 as a low-end model.

- Apple is not good at keeping new products entirely under wraps.

We are a week away. There has been no valid evidence of an iPhone 5.

Bottom line, stop assuming what Apple is going to do without taking their history and currently reality into account. Thank you.

By making the 4 a world phone, they would be internally improving it. Hence, the 4S. You are completely out of your mind, Maam.

And who are you to say that Apple reserves "S" for anything. They've had one device with an S at the end. It's not like there is some common pattern that they have followed.
