While I do think that $899 for a 24" monitor is a lot, it will likely be an H-IPS screen, which is the best screen type made. Couple that with the fact that it is LED, and it seems like a decent deal. I've been looking at a 24" HP monitor that is an S-IPS screen, and it retails for about $650-$700, and is the standard CFFL backlight.

Does anyone know if apple has an education discount on monitors?

They do so far.

If it's a dock...

It would have to accommodate (using the current range), 13", 15" and 17" sized machines and should be able to hold legacy machines (ie, not only just the new laptops but at least the last 2 generations of configuration (even a Powerbook 17", 15', (12"?). If it were a slot-in job, all would need a common 'interface' to click into. Unless there's some way to connect to the video port of all these machine DIRECTLY, can't see it happening...

So much ignorance in this thread regarding displays. Thankfully there were some informative posts by people who "get it", though many seem to have gone ignored.

Apple aren't a player in the display market, they offer them to compliment their pro systems so Apple can provide the full solution. They aren't aiming for everyone who needs a display to consider an Apple Cinema Display. They currently provide quality panels that offer good colour accuracy for a competitive price when compared with other professional displays.

Samsung are the only company to my knowledge who are selling LED displays at the moment with 20" for ~$700, 24" for ~$1,800 and 30" for ~$3,000. I and others have said for a long time Apple wouldn't do anything until they could offer OLED displays at competitive prices, if these rumours are true then it appears to be that time.

I'm sorry. I don't buy into this $899 Cinema Display thing. Why only come out with one size? Why not 3 or 2 ?

Maybe they don't want to offer smaller sizes and 30" is still too expensive. Or maybe this is all just relative to the $800 product rumour so we are only discussing the 24" model.

I agree that it's weird to only update one size of the monitor...it's also weird to me that they are going to leave the cheapest macbook with the current model, and have the more expensive models with the redesign. The only way I could think that this would make sense is if apple was going to release a cheap netbook, something that would be, let's say, $799 or cheaper (and would have the same white plastic design). It's just weird to have 2 different styles for the same Macbook line. Essentially what you're saying is, "If you want the new re-designs, you're going to have to spend more money to get it."

Now THAT is something I would be interested in.

What would be the point of a 24" monitor with built-in Apple TV? If it is connected to a Macintosh, you have something far more powerful than an Apple TV anyway. And if it is not connected to a Macintosh, who would want to pay $899 for a 24" TV? The display quality is wasted when it is used as a TV, a monitor at half the price works just as well _as a TV_.

The new Display IS the Brick!!

Maybe the new display IS the Brick that people have been talking about. The brick allows you to dock your new Macbook Pro by inserting it into the side of the screen.

wow. i was really hoping for a tablet. let's hope that's what it is and not a display. $899 for a 24"? i have an acer that i bought for $299

There is a difference between your cheap TN LCD display and a H-IPS LED display! If you don't know why, then do some research.

If the $899 product turns out to be a display, and the cheapest new laptop is $1299, there will be a HUGE backlash from both consumers and the press.

An 899 laptop would be the perfect move in the current economy. RAISING the cost of the cheapest laptop would be business suicide. They better have a model under a grand, and it better not just be selling out what's left of the old model.

I was excited about today, but this completely turns that around.

Remember this leaked notebook case? http://images.macrumors.com/article/2008/10/13/035124-mbp.jpg

Well it does have an 'additional' port at the bottom covered by some tape which would fit in with the low end 'macbook' which is rumored to be a cinema display.

There is something fishy about all of these leeks however, I reckon Apple is in on it

The unknown port is the battery status indicator....the battery will be IN the notebook, not part of its case. It´s no port.

Agreed. I'd happily pay $899 for a 24" LED monitor with a decent color gamut. That's actually a great price. We'll see if it happens. And if it docks my MBP on top of that then the price is a steal.

I can't believe some people actually whine that they can get an acer or HP or whatever for cheaper. By that rationale one thing can't be better than another. If ya can't tell the diff between junk and quality, go for the junk!

But some will pay more for the good stuff.

Then the EFiX Dongle for laptops and Psystar likey will come out with a laptop and they will get a big sales as well.
