I can see if the grills were more along the line of the 15" MacBook Pro speaker grills.

What, you mean like this? They are! :D

I'm hoping, judging from the size of the opening, :apple: adopts the micro-USB standard. I'll be waiting for airborne swines to zoom pass my cubicle.:p

I can't stand proprietary connections that adds very little over the what the industry standards does and only makes one more cable I'd have to lug around. Now if I were A LOT better, I wouldn't mind at all. :apple: and Sony, why you no like standards?

If the new connector does attach magnetically, it won't be a safety feature like on the MacBooks. It'll just be an ease of use feature. It's easier for a magnet to latch itself onto my iPhone rather than the user shoving it in there blindly and hoping its completely connected.

It would be hilarious if all of this was a major red herring.

Remember that rumor many months back about a 4.7" iPhone...maybe there is some truth to that. Maybe Apple is going to blow everyone away with something never thought of by anyone (like the 2007 iPhone) and be back in the game. Maybe it will have a version of Siri that can tell when you are sad (kind of like a golden retriever), maybe it will have a camera capable of capturing 4K video and the whole thing will be priced at $199 for a 32 GB model. Maybe...wow ok heading back to earth now.

Apple will announce an iPhone called "The new iPhone" and it will have a 4" 16x9 display and this new dock connector and it will look just like the leaked photos and they will announce some strange iPhone version of the smart cover.

sadly not surprised

oh well, I am so disappointed because we could already throw away the whole connector and have one less hole

why not charging by induction and transferring data wirelessly?

I expect Apple to be the first ones releasing a phone without connector. I just wonder why they have not yet done so :confused::confused:

Does this design prevent an adaptor to the existing dock connector?
I have too many devices, docks and car cables to feasibly change over everything.

I am very concerned this will be like the FireWire charging fiasco and there will be no adaptor and existing docks, stereos, accessoroes(Withings BP cuff for example) and car cables. I just don't see people buying $300 car kits just for a new cable.

I would buy the next phone in a heartbeat but only if there is an adaptor.

A few of my older electronics have mini-USB connectors. Some new GPS units I have been researching still use mini-USB. Too bad they all don't use micro-USB since it would not require all of those additional cables.

However, my iPad and iPod Nano both use the 30-pin connector, so that might be a problem.

This would have been the perfect opportunity to move to Micro-USB, the same standard as everyone else.

My bet is that even if it is different, micro-USB will be able to jam in to the hole without an adapter at least for charging purposes. EU rules require all new phones to charge via micro USB and it would be very un-Apple have a dongle addapter.

Er, due to the way magnets work, both will be required.

Umm... ever use a magnet on a refrigerator? I don't think refrigerator manufacturers magnetize them. You only need magnets on both surfaces if one isn't conductive.

The connector could be wide enough so that the magnetic points are at the screwheads, not within the connector hole. Just a thought.

MagSafe-like dock connector would be awesome. Bring it on... let the pre-orders begin! :D

I'll put a dollar on this new connector being a hybrid that will:
• Charge from a micro USB cable inserted in either direction (to prevent breakage and meet European legal requirements)
• Has a more capable, Apple-only cable that uses all pins

Same principle as the eSata/USB hybrid ports that predated USB 3 but engineered more cleanly, hence the metal ring that would help direct a micro USB cable to the power pins.

agreed!

Cynical reasons for these changes....

1. Change dock connector - re-sell all those docks/accessories again, make more profit

2. move headphone jack to the bottom, means that you cant use third party speakers with a cheap dock , you have to buy an expensive apple partner solution or leave the phone on its side. explain the removal of the headphone pass through on the cheap dock on the lack of pins on the new charging port.

3. build a new doughnut shaped building to fill with cash and swim around in like scrooge mcduck. :D

The 'metal ring' is just a standard housing for the connection itself, seeing as it won't include the tiny latches that are present on 30-pin cable. Nothing obscure about it.

Can micro usb pass through 24bit audio like the 30-pin connector can?

Why is the headphone jack now at the bottom of the phone? Or is the Dock Connector now at the top? I'm confused.

Surely a magnet would be strong enough to just pull the entire device with the cable instead of just popping out? A magsafe cable on a Phone/iPod seems a bit pointless.

Not pointless at all. Seems people are thinking of the iPhone more as a laptop when it is a handheld device.

For one thing, most of the times when my iPhone ends up on the floor it is because I walked away while using it when it was still connected. Sometimes the cord disconnects; sometimes the force yanks the iPhone out of my hand. Magsafe would be appreciated by me.

On top of that there is the ease of connecting and disconnecting.

pin connector

Did they patent this yet? You never know if some obscure person from China patented this set up just for the hell of it

Yes, that's what I mean, lol. I thought the OP was suggesting one side could be plastic or something.
