All those saying the phone looks wider, more likely it's an optical illusion. Pretty sure it's just closer to the camera.

Man, they must be using a 12mm super wide angle lens to make it look THAT much wider just by being a bit closer?!

MagSafe would be a lifesaver. No more tripping and flying my iPhone across the room!
A laptop is quite heavy, so if you trip, it is easy for magsafe to disconnect rather than drag the weight. iPhone is quite lightweight. iPhone magsafe would need to have a very weak connection to the phone, weaker than the gravity pulling the phone down. I am not sure how well such a weak magnet would work.

Those people saying the new iPhone looks wider - I think you'll find the 4S is just further away from the camera.

I like the idea of it being magnetic. Not so much for just a charging cord but for things like an iHome dock, mounting in my car and not having to fumble with the cord in awkward angles. Not worried about it saving my iPhone from flying across the room while charging (that has never happened to me).

I like the grill cutouts.

So much for doubling down on leaks.

That's for sure.

I've never seen so many leaks whether they're true or false, this round of rumors surrounding the upcoming new phone, are flooding in as fast as the various sources can publish them. If it turns out the recent ones are true, it will remove any surprises or excitement.

If they are false and Apple delivers a phone unlike anything we've seen, then the blogosphere is certain to light up with all kinds of commentary about Apple's success in keeping the phone a secret.

Either way, there's plenty of entertainment in all of this for anyone :)

The new phone looking wider is nice to see... If true then being so much taller won't make it look weirdly long!

Wahoo!

I couldn't possibly agree with you any more. I pray it is not only taller but wider as well. The photos flying around online look so stupid that I've been eyeing alternatives lately.

This would have been the perfect opportunity to move to Micro-USB, the same standard as everyone else.

I couldn't agree more. I don't really see any advantage to using a proprietary connector other then to increase cable or accessory sales. Micro USB is a standard just like all the standard connectors on a Mac. Before anyone says "but the Apple connector can do so much more then a Micro USB" please explain what it can do that Micro USB can't. I have a Micro USB on my RAZR and when attached to a dock it can do all kinds of stuff.

ROTFLMAO, at least someone else I know does it, also I prefer the Audio Jack and Charger jack on the bottom, hard to use headphones on top while charging on the bottom, restricts phone movement too much.
Then, you cannot charge it on a dock and hook up headphones to it unless you buy a new dock that has a pass through for headphones. I guess it is not the end of the world, but of you already have a dock, a simple adaptor just for the charging connector would not be enough.

So much for doubling down on leaks.

It's a great leak because it's warning users to stop purchasing related products with the old connector. Had I not heard the rumors, I would have purchased a new Bose sound system with the old standard connector last week.

Agreed. I don't like how it's unsymmetrical like the speaker and mic on our 4/4s's.
Do you want them to add a second headphone jack so it looks symmetrical? An iOS device has three 'single' external features, (1) the dock connector, the (2) headphone jack, and (3) the on/off switch. You could place two symmetrically centered but the third one would need to be off-center and unsymmetrical.

The most intriguing aspect of this pic - for me - is the width comparison. I was under the impression that the 4S and the new iPhone would be the same width.

Is there another pic showing a 4S side by side, or on top, with the housing of a new iPhone?

BTW, I really like the flush, bevel design of the outer band. I really think haters will be pretty amazed on Sept. 12 :apple:

mini dock connector

I'll put a dollar on this new connector being a hybrid that will:
• Charge from a micro USB cable inserted in either direction (to prevent breakage and meet European legal requirements)
• Has a more capable, Apple-only cable that uses all pins

Same principle as the eSata/USB hybrid ports that predated USB 3 but engineered more cleanly, hence the metal ring that would help direct a micro USB cable to the power pins.

Those speaker grill holes look horrible!

This is a mock-up, not an actual released product. I would not mind the holes if it enabled better sound. I primarily purchase products because of what they can do for me, not how might they look stuffed away in my pocket.

I really don't think the speaker grills are very Apple Like. These grills are not Jonny Ive's Design. Apple would never design grills for speakers like that. I can see if the grills were more along the line of the 15" MacBook Pro speaker grills.

Another Apple expert and a personal friend of Jony.

Amazing!

The purpose of the ring is currently unknown, but some have been hoping that Apple's new dock connector will include an attachment mechanism similar to the MagSafe standard used on the company's notebook computers. A MagSafe-like dock connector could allow users to insert the cable in either orientation, a feature suggested last week by iLounge, and make it easier for the cables to simply snap into place.

Oh, I hope so.

It would be very nice if the phone used MicroUSB. However, if it is indeed a new, proprietary dock connector, my decision to go with another Android has been solidified.

Do you want them to add a second headphone jack so it looks symmetrical?

They should have made the new dock connector look visually the same as the headphone jack, you know, to keep it symmetrical! Also the sleep button should be in the middle of the top of the device, and both volume buttons on either side of it.

Gosh, is everyone here blind??? :)

as just a few others have pointed out, this latest pic makes one phone look wider than the other, refuting the common wisdom for johnny-long-phone.

at the source, there are more photos, and here, too, it looks like that. check out this sloppy photoshop pic I made superimposing them! me happier now. :)

Micro-USB wouldn't support everything the dock connector does, that's why.

Really? How many of those pins are used anyhow? Why are they still passing video with component signals when everyone else has moved on to Micro HDMI? My phone has a Micro USB and Micro HDMI and can do just about anything I need it to do with just 2 tiny connectors.

It looks wider because it's closer to the camera. Perspective.

That shell doesn't look 18% thinner as many reports are saying and it also looks wider. WHAT GIVES?

It looks wider because it's closer to the camera. Perspective.

The new dock connector may well be that small, but when you view the image full size, there are too many flaws on that bottom case for it to be anything other than a home-made job. The speaker holes have drill marks, they're not evenly spaced, etc.

Because the object used in the photo does not look factory-made to me, I don't think it matters how wide it is - IMO it's not genuine.
