THE METAL RING IS NOT MAGSAFE,

As I have said. It's earth, the band is the antenna and the power connector will need to be isolated just like the headphone socket on the existing phone. Likely a fast connector that needs screening.

This would have been the perfect opportunity to move to Micro-USB, the same standard as everyone else.

The whole point of the Dock Connector is that it has features that Micro-USB lacks.

----------

Gosh, this has been long overdue for an improvement.

Bets on how long before Samsung copies this idea? I say 6 months.

They won't since they're already on Micro-USB.

I'd be very surprised if it's a magSafe connector. It's fine when it's purely used for charging something (which has a battery in it anyway) where randomly disconnecting it causes no harm. But seeing as this is also a data connection I think I personally would want something that takes a little more effort to take out.

Regardless of any clever tricks iOS might do to protect itself, abruptly pulling the plug on a data transfer seems like an extremely bad idea.

Put it this way - if you sync your iPhone or restore it or whatever via USB, you are told in no uncertain terms NOT to disconnect it until it's all done.

i'm guessing this is out of the question with a mag safe adapter? saved my iPhone a few times already that way ...

I'm having doubts about the MagSafe thing, but even if they were to add it, third-party cables could fix the problem. Personally, I've caused more almost-damage to my phone by tripping on the cable, and the cable is long enough in my case for it to hit the ground. Nice wooden case by the way.

Oh I really hope that what they are showing there is more like the final product. I see its wider which would be the most amazing thing ever!! So disappointed seeing the other leaks showing a width the same as the current iphone. this makes me really happy. Then to think the new doc will be like a the magnet connector on the macbooks, that's just ingenious!! Really liking what I am seeing now, wider iphone and magnetic doc connector, good job Apple!!

Finally getting excited about the new iPhone!!

???

REALLY !!! you think having a magnetic connection effects the rate of charging o_O

sometimes my (lack of) faith in the education system is proved correct

Excuse your rudeness. If the magsafe on a macbook is considerably smaller and provides faster/better charging than the 30-pin: it's not unreasonable to expect faster charge for something such as an iphone with the magsafe. iPad needs improved charging given the 6 hours it takes to charge that massive battery right now.

Think BEFORE you speak (or post).

How often do you actually connect your phone to a computer now for data uses? think about it, I haven't plugged my iPhone into a computer in months. Ever since WiFi syncing and iCloud restores there is no need to do data transfers over a cable. And for media everything is airplay or bluetooth now.

The only thing I could think of that I need to plug it in for is installing the beta iOS software.. but once thats done once, I just do over the air updates. Apple could come up with a way to fix that though my inputting a code on the developer site that activates a link to download the software over the air like you do for updates... soon you might not ever need a data plug on a phone.

It's still a risk now. Maybe not as great a risk, but there is still the risk in the sync cable disconnecting. But that risk is already minimized and iPhone will not end up a brick.

Most of the stuff that happens when connected to iTunes loads something onto the iPhone and then it is acted upon/executed after it has successfully been transferred. Apps don't get loaded in their ready-to-run state: the ipas are transfered to the iPhone and the install runs on the iPhone itself.

Moreover you don't have to sync via sync cable anymore and firmware updates can be OTA. Even if something should go awry during a full firmware restore through iTunes it can easily be done again. (And the window for something going awry is not that large.)

Not to sound snide, however the information is easily obtainable.

USB doesn't have all the signals used by the dock connector.

::EDIT:: This isn't all of them but gives an idea of what it has.

But if it has less pins, it wouldn't have all that, would it? How much can they get with 8 pins? Is it still less than usb?

Meh, the white 4SL looks pretty ghetto... has a frankenstein look to it. Was thinking about going with a white phone this time but if it looks like that, I'm steering clear.

That's exactly how I feel. I would have gotten a white iPhone 4 had it been available, but I'm not sure about the new iPhone.

I agree entirely. A lot of knee-jerk negativity going on here but the design is even more clean and minimal than the 4S and that is a work of industrial design genius. This new handset is a refinement and an upgrade.

----------

Detailed measurements of the front panels show it to be slightly wider than the 4S.

But the front panel is now almost edge to edge, isn't it? There's less metal band protruding.

What's with all the obsession about speaker grill holes on the bottom. They are for sound not for viewing. The true advantage is stereo sound. Lighten up. I hope you're not counting the holes on the bottom of your iMac or on the Mac Pro and obsessing over whether they are even.
No. Like now, one will be mic, one will be mono speaker.

First time I've really noticed on any of the leaks/mockups/fakes, the beveled edge from the side to the front (vs. the 90º on the 4 series). It doesn't have the lip created by the outer band either, that's been a way to mount those really slim cases like the Incipio Feather on the 4.

I think that is maybe an optical illusion in that pic.

Am a bit suprised someone would choose to buy a phone based more on what it looks then what it does! So far we know none of next gen iPhone specs! Each to their own i guess! My iPhone is always in a protective case anyway! I'ts the phone of my choice because of how good it is on what it does and not because of the design. Though i like the design too.

Don't start doing a Palm number

I hope apple doesn't change connector. You can just go about anywhere there days and someone will have a charger (often much needed). Don't start doing like Palm did and change the doc every time it released a new model--it was so frustrating.
