BlueTooth 4 is for the NFC!

BlueTooth 4 is how Apple is going to implement the NFC communication for shopping.

They haven't been using it for anything else. It's been in the phones and computers.

I don't think they've updated any keyboards or trackpads to support it. So what's it for?

It's for shopping. Super low power, short range.

This is not available yet.

There is no over-the-counter wristwatch that can pair with a phone available today.

Just because you can dream up something does not mean that you can make a working version. These are two different things.

I guess that when cell phones become small enough for wrist watches, and they're actually produced, the cartoonist who invented Dick Tracy should get all the royalties?

If they were issued the patent, yes  That's how the patent system works in the US

Apple will be introducing the next-generation iPhone on September 12, with availability apparently set for Friday, September 21.

So when did the media invites for Sept. 12 go out? I don't mean to be sarcastic but I wish MacRumors would not use such certain language when something hasn't been officially confirmed by Apple yet. September 12 is over 1 month away...a lot can happen in that time.

It's a mock up, they just flipped the metal rim on the two models. An accident.

If you look at the two attached images, you'll notice that the speaker grills are 'flipped around' between the black phone and white phone.

Any significance?

Unless BT 4.0 supports a quick connect and disconnect feature, no.

Imagine having to pair with every payment kiosk you encounter

Aside from the other features/advantages, I really hope the new connector does allow the cable to be plugged in without having it "right side up". It's not that hard for me to do, but older folks can really struggle with that due to poor eyesight.

You have a good point, one thing I've not thought about. The advantage of what you've brought up is the ease of use it will bring to the throngs of seniors I see with iPhones.

Especially since Apple is now targeting the mainstream non-technical, non-enthusiast, features like this will help them sell to the demographic that are attracted to an easy to use, somewhat basic device.

Considering at this juncture it's mainly about sales volume .. witness that Apple is continuing to use the same old design, anything to accommodate seniors will only strengthen their position in that demographic. There's a lot of buying power in that "baby boomer" generation of old people.

Do payment kiosks even HAVE blutooth?

Another valid question :p

Payment is going to have to be NFC, apple isn't going to replace the worlds entire infrastructure, but most credit card scanners in the last decade have NFC capabilities.

Would absolutely love if it turned out to be magnetic as well, so you just had to lift it up to the port and it would snap on. How cool would that be?

The magsafe is easily one of my favorite Apple inventions.

Yes, because the idea of a wristwatch phone companion is so unique to just Apple.

Nobody said it was unique, but Samsung does not currently have such a product. If Apple releases one, you can bet they will.

It's generally inadvisable to make any data connection so easy to detach like that. All sorts of bad things can happen if you disconnect a cable mid-transfer. I don't think they'd do something like that.

It's also worth noting that the whole point of MagSafe was to prevent a laptop from crashing to the floor from someone tripping over the cable. I don't think you could make the magnet weak enough for that to work on an iPhone, without making it too weak to stay connected. iPhones are light.

I like the idea of not having to differentiate sides, but whats the advantage in making it magnetic?

There is none IMO. It works on the MBP because no data gets transferred through the cable.

Imagine the damage that could be done by accidentally pulling the magsafe cable out of your iPhone in the middle of a sync.

This could possibly lead to answering text messages/phone calls on your laptop instead of having to look around the room for your phone or pull it out in public. Epic.
Had you bought an Android phone instead, you would be able to do that already ;)

Oh yes, as usual, let's pretend that things like the bluetooth enabled Samsung S9110 never happened.

iOS/iTunes has to be able to handle/recover from that situation anyhow, since non-magnetic connectors can also be detached mid-transfer. If the Magsafe magnet is strong enough there wouldn't be a huge difference between the force required to detach it or a standard frictional connector.

The advantages of a magnetic connector would be it wouldn't admit dust or become clogged with fluff, and it would be more durable than the protruding 'pins' in the existing dock connector.

I tend to agree about using a magsafe-type connector for the dock connector. What I would have liked to see is a magsafe-type connector for the headphone jack.

The 3.5 mm headphone connector has a lot of drawbacks. A big one is that it's too long and thin, making it prone to having the male end broken off in the jack. It's also just too damned big for its purpose. Given modern materials, it should at the least be much smaller and shorter, which would leave a lot more space inside the device for other hardware or batteries.

I find this "same old design" thing a bit confusing.

These two phones are basically the same shape, have essentially the same placements of buttons and sensors and speakers and what have you. I didn't hear anyone moaning about Samsung using the "same old design".

From what we have seen so far the new iPhone will be as different from the 4S as the Galaxy S3 is from the S2.

I seem to be having some trouble with the images! Sorry about that. But the point I'm making pretty much stands. The new iPhone will be thinner, have a larger screen, a different placement for the headphone jack and new grills, a new doc connector and be made from different materials. How much more "different" do people want?!

Trust me, it's not my eyes. Although they are amazing! In the report, it specifically says that the dock connector there is 19 pins. Go back and look.

Better yet, why don't you find the link and share it?
The dock connector has not been leaked yet so anything it said was speculation.

Just one quick example, but apple has been researching for years now on ways to make 3.5 mm plugs take up less space. Literally dozens of completely different ideas, some are very cool.

Seriously. I've already ordered a Pebble in Jet Black. It's going to do the exact same thing, and thankfully will be with E-Paper, which means I'll actually be able to read it in the sunlight.
