This store makes 1.5-2 million a day. They'll make it back within a week, the press coverage alone is worth it.

The publicity alone is worth more than the investment.

From a business point of view, the investment is trivial compared to the advertising an PR return.

As for the cube - it seems almost to disappear leaving the Apple logo the center of attention, like it is magically hanging in space. I like the design, for what that's worth.

As for the criticism that the money could have been used elsewhere for humanitarian purposes - this could be argued for any non-humanitarian use of any corporation's funds. I am in sympathy with the position - there is never enough money spent to feed children, research diseases, help others. But at least for Apple, the $6.6 million dollars represents a trivial amount. They could have found that much between the cushions of the corporate couch. If Apple was going to contribute to humanitarian causes, the $80 billion in cash reserves provides more than adequate funds to contribute - if that is Apple's desire. Whether Apple wishes to make such contributions is fodder for another thread.

Now THAT'S how you make a cube! Totally worth the $6 million price tag.

I actually wouldn't be surprised that cube could withstand a slow moving car crashing into it. Now, I just have to define 'slow'...

6 million for that? Wow, Apple is rich. hehe I hope they give more discounts to Apple users.

And maybe some dare-devil will do a stunt of crashing their car onto that window. lol

love it... didn't think i would like it as it would lose the "sparkle," but i love it.

Steve was right. :apple:

Q: How many union construction workers does it take to build a two story glass cube in New York?

A: Five to hassle the planning commission over material safety issues and put in more plans to extend the billable labor hours. Ten to try to switch sub-standard building materials so they could sell the actual building materials on the black market. Fifty to move the materials off the truck and on the work site and the complain again about safety materials issues. One hundred to work less than forty hours a week again stating hazardous materials while getting double time. Finally, sixty to do the real work as they listen to independent contractors who are the only ones that have real experience working with structural glass. Finally, six dozen electrical union and three dozen carpenter union members to petition for their living wage to finish the job. All of this puts off profitability for two years while the city waves Apple retail tax to break even and keep the store running. :D

Please explain to me how spending $6M on a new structure that is marginally different from the previous is somehow going to make Apple a better company?

A waste of money, if you ask me.

Details, details. Whether it's an iPhone or a Store. Apple's corporate culture revolves around perfectionism and refinement - no matter how insignificant the subject. In turn, that corporate culture is translated into product culture.

As within, so without.
