People seem to be assuming that Apple arrogantly dismissed Google maps from iOS - but this isn't the case (according to what I heard). Google basically terminated the licence, or at least stipulated licence conditions that were simply not acceptable to Apple. No way are Apple prepared to leave such a core piece of functionality in the hands of a major competitor, so they had to move quickly to build their own solution.

In the short term, yes it probably suck. In the longer term, we'll hopefully end up with something much better than the **** sandwich Google were expecting us to eat.

On the positive side, the driving directions are great !

Where do you have heard it? Insider information?

Cloud

I cant see my house on the satellite version of the map or the nearest town as it's completely obscured by cloud. Birmingham (UK) is just a bunch of pixels, no capacity to zoom in at all.

As with all things Apple I expect the USA to get the Lion's share of user benefits with the ROTW following behind later, and I don't normally complain about the lag but this is a truly shocking downgrade of the mapping functionality in iOS

Bring Back Google... PLEASE!!

Wow. Everyone is criticising an app they didn't use much before iOS 6...

Yeah, we didn't use it because it sucked before too. I kept waiting for the android version of google maps to appear on the iPhone (oops, excuse me, "on iPhone). I'm a big apple fan, but they just weren't ready for primetime on this one. I think the apple maps are beautiful. I love playing with them much more than Google Earth, but I want a maps app that helps me find my destination - this ain't it.

I live in West Virginia and traveling between two town on opposite ends of the state (I'm in college). Being rural and not having large cities, all looks good for me. Although I just don't like the overall feel of it and have yet to try to get some where. I find it ironic (servers or not) that areas like mine are actually quite good, but New York is ****. Regardless I'm on the hoping for a Google Map app train, too. I just don't like the feel of it yet.

Edit: Just did a current location to Walmart, which I know the best way to get to. it would've put me in someones driveway....

Maybe someone already posted something similar to my comment, but, I wouldn't be surprised if we see a lawsuit soon in the future regarding someone not finding a hospital or finding a hospital where it does not exist or something similar to running off the road.

The main reason for me using Apple's mapping solution will be for the turn by turn navigation.

I can't help but think with their resources Apple should hire a mass of people to develop like mad to close the gap between Google's already massive lead.

I also think implementing a report system into the app for mapping errors would be wise, otherwise these mishaps will only be resolved when the next iOS comes out.

Maybe they could have the app update instead of a system update? Most users would find that quicker especially with the new iOS app update procedure.

If Google decides to release a mapping app in the store i for one will be downloading it much like the youtube app.

It would be controversial if they released it as a paid app though !

so far I have not been impressed with the Map app. Not sure why Apple bother with all of this. Just leave this stuff to Google.

Let's put more resources to the Mac Pro line instead. :D

Actually, they are probably waiting on purpose. They want people to complain publicly about iOS6 Maps for a while... and then, maybe after a couple weeks, release their own app to loud applause.

Google's a bit bitter and they want to use this opportunity to be the knight in shining armor, coming to save the day.

I'm looking forward to Apple's response. If a British minister has to contact Apple about errors, things are very bad.
This may prompt another broadcast by the execs.

To be Frank - Maps is piss poor

I accept that such a huge product - mapping the entire world - can not be easily veto'd for mistakes, but some of the errors in the UK are massive. The Man United one is my favourite - the world's biggest sporting brand and club with the largest fanbase is now a Over 5's community team in Sale.

Wrong ways down one way streets, shops that went bust 3 years ago, even their own store in the wrong place....Apple need to address this sharpish but they won't...they'll sit on it and wait for the fire to burn to embers and accept people are accepting the mistakes.

Google could whack out their old app for 69p and make a killing right now

After email and browsing I think a maps application is one of the biggest used features of a phone for me and many others, especially if you're in a new city. Even in my home city a digital map that can guide me to a location / house / shop / restaurant / point of interest is absolutely invaluable.

Google may have their own issues, but at least they're consistent and Apple's inclusion of an iOS maps app is a half finished knee-jerk reaction to spurn Googles influence on their OS.

As I've mentioned in another thread, this 'world' maps service in China is now fundamentally broken, with no legitimate way to even view or search properly the rest of the world.

Even on the occasion that I managed to explore the 3D satellite view, I jumped to some of the locations shown in Apples own promo and ... well it's vile. I didn't expect perfection out of a 3D scanned fly-by ... but it's simply foul to look at, lazily produced and shouldn't have even been included.

If Apple could offer a competitive service (not necessarily better, but competitive) then great, but if it's like this, just don't bother. It makes them look like a bunch of idiots.

Question for you. I'm on an iPhone 4 too and have found that although it does the turn by turn, the banners don't change as I'm driving, I have to swipe them with my finger to get them to change from one direction to the other. Have you found the same thing on yours? I'm in Canada so don't know if that makes a difference?

Yes that works the same way on the iPhone4 for me also.

On the plus side, the mobile version of maps.google.com seems to be just as functional as the old Maps app. Just follow the prompts to add it to your home screen.

You can bet Google is tracking data about the number of iOS6 users that add the mobile site to their home screen.

is it just me, but when I zoom in on my location when in satellite mode, it goes to a grid with a no entry sign. is it because the area i'm in is a small town? as when i zoom in on say London, it's fine

worked fine in google maps

Wow. Everyone is criticising an app they didn't use much before iOS 6...

You can't generalize others by comparing what you use/don't use. I used Google Maps all the time. If Apple replaced that with their own, it better have similar or better functionality.

I've been an Apple user for almost 10 years, and the Maps app mess has made me seriously considering switching to WP or even Android. I know first hand that the competition's devices and UI kind of sucks, but at least their Maps app is functional...
Anyway, did Google ever announced officially that they'll release a Maps app for iOS 6? I saw a lot of articles mentioning it, but no links to the source.
And what other solutions is there out there? I was planning on getting the iPhone 5 but now I won't until a functional Maps app is made available for it. Would jailbreaking be useful?

The app is functional....come on at least try and be a little logical about it. The app works. The vector rendering is faster and the new POI cards offer more info. Yes the data is flawed, sometimes old and wrong. Yes it's missing streetview and transit (which from what I've heard isn't all that accurate on GMaps anyways). But its brand new and a work in progress. All mapping applications rely on crowd-sourced data. It will get better with time.

As for Google offering an iOS equivalent, they rely heavily on the iPhone userbase for that same crowd-sourced data so I'd bet it'll be here soon. Though they could very well try and use the app to sway people like you who want to jump ship over a maps application.

There are also many third party apps out there as well as the browser version of Gmaps to consider as well if Apple's Maps are really that unusable. Point is there ARE options while we wait for the Apple maps to mature.

Gimme a Break!

That sounds like the famous McDonald's coffee-spilled-in-the-crotch case!

If somebody is going to try the faulty iOS 6 map glitch for a lawsuit, I say tough! No file - No Case

As soon as native Google maps is available I'll be happy Apple is throwing their hat into the maps game. But for now I can't rely upon an app that can't find east 12th street in freaking Manhattan...

yes, and apple should know (common knowledge) that is the center of the known universe.
