This is a no brainer - so what, the bridge is a bit off, however look at a comparison of the surrounding buildings to Google Maps (same location). You will see Apple has greater detail. Also in Google Maps the images are blurry and the building behind the bridge are flat and not in 3D.

They both have pro's and con's, however Apple for the most part has better picture quality.

I'd much rather my map told me the correct location of a town rather than a 3D image of the Empire State Building. 10 best mistakes below:

I've been an Apple user for almost 10 years, and the Maps app mess has made me seriously considering switching to WP or even Android. I know first hand that the competition's devices and UI kind of sucks, but at least their Maps app is functional...
Anyway, did Google ever announced officially that they'll release a Maps app for iOS 6? I saw a lot of articles mentioning it, but no links to the source.
And what other solutions is there out there? I was planning on getting the iPhone 5 but now I won't until a functional Maps app is made available for it. Would jailbreaking be useful?

jailbreaking is ALWAYS useful ;)

It isn't the same as the native app, but if you go to maps.google.com there will be an option to install the web version on your phone.

Make it so Apple's maps become as irrelevant as possible. Once they are, will Apple be willing to improve and maintain such an irrelevant part of their business ? Probably not, and they'll just slowly drop out of the mapping business altogether.

I think Apple is in the mapping business for good. So they'd probably spend some decent money on it and develop their maps app as best as they could if Google released a kick-ass maps app for iOS. In any case, even with Google's app on your phone, every other app will depend on Apple's mapping solution, so Apple would still be forced to make it usable.

Looks like Apple didn't learn their lesson from iTunes Match.

If it's a disaster during the beta and all the beta testers are screaming that it's not ready for release...release it anyway.

It's unacceptable that countries such as England can't even use satellite images because Apple don't have the data for it, for me that's an incomplete app. It's also totally unreasonable not to allow 3G FaceTime for iPhone 4. There's no hardware issue.

I'm really excited Apple has stuck two fingers up to the naysayers and rolled out the new Maps app to the entire iOS universe. They need to start from somewhere, and this innovative mapping technology will improve the more we use it, and help improve it.

This is a good solid 1.0 release. Remember Google Maps has been going for several years and more. Google won't be laughing today. They know they are about to be eclipsed by Apple.

The release is a joke, it's not solid in any way. There are so many errors in the data, and missing information, that it will take years to get the data fixed.

Maybe your own particular area is okay. The non-US maps are a complete joke and not fit for purpose.

The 3D view errors are funny, but understandable. But getting map basics wrong is unacceptable.

While we give it time, do you think Google will sit tight and not improve their own solution ? If Apple and Google improve at the same pace, then are we not right back at square one in a few years when Apple still hasn't caught up to Google ?

Pretty big change to take, that whole "give it time" business.

Apple doesn't have to play catch up with Google. Apple's mapping solution have been terrible compared to Android maps app for years, but that didn't stop people from buying iOS devices. Apple simply has to get the map data accuracy they had before to stop people who depend on the maps app from switching.

If you all hate Apple so much leave. You expect everything to be perfect it doesnt work that way. There will be a google maps app for ios soon and remember Google started this fight, hate them for not giving you all the features of android.

Version 1.0

It's version 1.0 ... if you don't like it, then don't buy the phone or purchase another mapping app.

Whining is pointless, and frankly, some of the blame goes to Google for messing up the relationship with Apple.

The removal of Google’s maps from ios 6 seems eerily reminiscent of the browser wars back in the mid 1990’s. The biggest difference is that as of now there has been no complaint from the US Department of Justice. Microsoft would not allow other browsers the same level of integration into the windows framework as they gave to their homegrown internet explorer. As a result consumers had no little choice but to use an inferior product, the antitrust legislation brought by the US DOJ in 1998 ignited the browser renaissance that allowed Firefox and Chrome to flourish and forced Explorer to significantly improve itself to the point that we all have significantly improved options today.
With mobile computing in the era of the truly personal computer - calling this a post-pc world is just succumbing to Apple’s marketing, today our computers are more personal than ever before – the maps program on our devices has become as important as the browser. Today we use our computer’s in our pockets (which we rarely use as phones) to find the quickest way to our friends house, or to a new restaurant in town. The default maps program has the advantage that any mapping hooks in our contact database or on browser web pages will open directly into it.
Photography is also an area that now integrates mapping information. On a recent trip to S. America I utilized a GPS attachment with my DSLR. When the photos were loaded into Apple’s tablet I was able to see on a map the name of campsites and archaeological sites while on the inca trail, and the names of small churches in towns that only had 500 people. As of 9/19 when Apple forcefully removed one mapping program in favor of their own half-baked solution I lost access on my tablet to the names of many of those sites. Even if Google does make their own maps available again as an application on ios 6, it will not likely have the same abilities as Apple’s own default maps.
As Apple begins to operate much more like a monopoly reminiscent of Microsoft in the 1990’s I am left wondering when they will be given the same treatment and find themselves in the middle of antitrust probe on behalf of the consumers.

'Maps' is closely related to 'Search'.
Should`ve bought yahoo maps instead of tomtom.

Maybe the problem is that Apple has gained a reputation for excellence - from design to build to customer service. So they set the bar higher than most other companies. Then they release a maps app, and possibly a black iPhone that looks 6 months old after 2 days. That's uncharacteristic carelessness, and it will not go unnoticed by customers or the media.

With all the money they had in the bank, I'm just aghast that they didn't throw a ton of hours and resources into building an excellent map app. It's not "new" - they've been working on it for a long time. Long enough to do better than this. Either they were starved for resources, with insufficient funding to get the job done, or they had a very low set of standards.

I just wonder who wears the boots at Apple now. Someone should be receiving some swift kicks up the backside for this. It makes Apple look very inexperienced, and that's a shame.

Wow. Everyone is criticising an app they didn't use much before iOS 6...

What makes you say that ?

I don't know anyone with a phone/tablet that does not use it for maps. It is a really key feature. In the UK I only have to ask for a postcode and I can navigate right to the door - no need for Tom Tom at all

Calm down. This isn't about hating Apple or not. It's ok to criticize companies we give money to for services when those services get downgraded. It doesn't mean anyone is leaving.

Lets face it if you live in uk this app is virtually useless , Siri was bad enough then that useless podcast app now this .. Not the apple I used to know its just embarrassing I can't even see clouds where I live ... There's no images at all and it's a town of 60 thousand people

If I were google I'd release a iOS maps app and charge you a buck. Then I'd watch the millions roll in. Apple Maps is deplorable. Those defending it are either extremely lucky or straight up delusional.
I'd buy the app for $50. Come on, Google!

Well, be real... it's version 0.1 of the app, a public beta. But I think what people are complaining about is not that they have inadvertently downloaded an app that doesn't meet their expectations, it is that in doing so an app that DID meet their expectations was deleted from their device.

Eh, I had high hopes for this, especially with the turn by turn navigation but at the cost of accuracy and search functionality I think I would want to stick with google maps with this for now.
