And even if they do release a Google maps app, as someone has stated, it won't help all the thousands of existing iOS apps that use the built-in maps. They will all go from using decent Google maps on iOS5 to rubbish Apple maps when running on iOS6. As a map app developer this is the most annoying part for me.

That is a bummer, I hadn't thought of that angle, besides iPhone customers I guess that's another group that will get sideswiped with this update - who'll want to buy those when their base source is so bad. Serious bummer.

Alternatives Map Apps will be getting tried out and used at this point.

Let's face it IOS6 maps are crap. I bet if Steve was still in charge that would have never happened. Void of leadership?

I just hope Google will produce such an app. If I were them then I wouldn't bother as it's looking like iOS having crap maps will push a lot of people towards Android.

The only problem Google faces in not creating an iOS offering is they'll lose a huge portion of their crowd-sourced database. None of those people on iOS will be pushing new data to them which will in turn make for slower updates down the road.

Apple's will improve. These things don't happen overnight. (GMaps has been around for over 7 years and its still not perfect).

I realize Apple signed a deal with TomTom, but how can the driving directions be so different than a TomTom GPS? Is this because they're also using OpenStreetMap?

I like the design and feel of Apple's mapping app. The driving directions are what I have a problem with so far.

how long can we reasonably expect someone addressing this issue (apple or google). Is google's app 1 week away? 2 months away? a year away? are they going to make one?

is apple going to comment on this at all? people keep saying stuff like 'crowd sourced data' and stuff, but does that update automatically? or are we going to have to wait months for apple to collect this data, and then roll out an update?

Yup, that's about the size of it. Looks like I'll stick with iOS5 for now until Apple maps (Mapple? :p) matures into a worthy replacement for Gmaps.

If not, I can see myself opting for Android when my contract expires. Not just for the maps, but I dislike iOS' restrictions more and more, not to mention the clumsy iTunes, worst syncing solution ever.

Sometimes I wonder if having an open platform isn't worth the increased vulnerability.

It's an interesting question to ponder. Under his leadership, Apple certainly has released software products that experienced significant regression in capabilities (Final Cut Pro, iMovie etc.) and took a lot of criticism for....but this is really bad (especially the international) - one would have hoped that the execs playing with the application would have seen how bad this was and flagged it as not ready and kept the Google App till the license actually expired making their app "beta" or something if they really need user input for improvement.

Steve certainly would've been pissed at this point though. ;-)

I'm not sure... it feels like it was Steve's goal to distance itself from google as much as possible.

Maybe apple and google need to merge....

!!!!!!!!!!!

Good point! ALSO, Google said is low priority to release native map app for iphone. They want everyone to see what a FAIL Apple is in developing their own useful maps.

FYI, here in the UK, Siri started out as scarcely a beta product a year ago - it hasn't improved at all in that time. So hopefully that addresses your remaining reason to get the Iphone5.

Seems to be a pattern here...
Apple show off novel feature at launch event (carefully mocked-up to hype expectations)
People buy into that feature.
People discover it's not that good/reliable/well-supported etc.
People complain.
Apple does nothing.
People forget in time for next launch event.

Maps, Siri, and even back to the original with Visual Voicemail

Cheers Glynn .. Siri nearly made me go for the 4S .. then I came to senses after a while .. nah .. I'll wait for the 5 .. itl be RADICALLY better.. wont it?.

I was thinking of going for a 4S .. but now Apple in its wisdom will only sell the 16gb! I want a 32gb .. so that means I will have to get one from O2 and consequently be locked into them - theyre my current provider .. but how cheaper will it be .. £100 in comparison to the 5?. Bit of a catch 22. I dont think its worth spending a lorra cash for a similar looking and acting phone to the one I have now but at the same time if I only jump one level to the 4S - its not THAT much cheaper than a 5 .. d'oh!

I have a Mac and other Apple products .. were it not for the fact they all interact so well - I'd go Android now - but even thats becoming a tenous reason to stick ... perhaps now that Apple have been exposed for shoving out a half baked, oily loaf that is IOS 6 on to a half arsed phone thats not QUITE the full deal - the iPhone 5 - then maybe even the blissful folks whose lives ARE Apple products - will see the pattern of - Promise->Take Away -> Promise -> Disappoint -> Promise -> Rip Off .... the only consistency is the persistently overpriced products .. for that to work you need quality AND reliablity ... there .. I've said it.. !

Steve is probably doing summersaults in his grave...

I sincerely don't think so. Otherwise he would be doing be the same when iMac dropped floppies, the fake "antennagate" scandal and so on. Apple has thrived on bold decisions, and this is just another one of them for strategic reasons (long term non-reliance on Google).

Design-wise, Apple Maps seems great. Vector-based maps are MUCH more responsive than iOS 5's Maps. Directions are great. Traffic information is useful.

You want more info? It's coming from Apple and the gazillions of iOS users.

ONCE MORE: to expect it to be as comprehensive from day ONE as a seven-year old Google app is LUDICROUS. Get over it and grow up, please.

p.s.: And it's "somersaults" by the way... ;)

Yes. But look at the stink now. Just WAIT until everyone gets their new iPhone 5 tomorrow and finds out all location based functions are a total TURD.

Thanks a lot Apple. Some of us make a lot of money (in my case millions) in selling apps. Now you drive users away. Great.

:mad::apple:

i get it! i know apple failed, i just want google maps!

it's rare that i'm dying for a company to release a specific app.

I can't believe Apple Execs stood up at the Keynote and sold this garbage as a 'cool new feature' when they must've known it was pathetic junk not even a tenth ready for prime time.

It makes them look like a bunch of complete dicks - dishonest dicks trying to sell crapness as greatness.

Perhaps they should stop dicking around with this dickery and start getting the basics right like, y'know, making a new Mac Pro or something.

Sack Tim Cook now. Just sack him. We don't need no more Gil Amelio thanks.

Put Jonny Ive in the hotseat. Someone who'll call crap crap and scrap crap that's crap.

Your post is too much emotion and too little fact...but on one thing I might agree: Cook is a better man as COO, not CEO.

Posts like yours make me shake my head... Anything is for sale when you have the money that Apple does. You simply make an offer a company cannot refuse.

Examine what you just wrote.

Do you think Google will give up one of their prime assets for ANY amount of money? They licensed the tech to Apple all this time. Apple chose to dump them and develop their own solution.

VW has more money than BMW. Do you think BMW will sell them the ///M division if VW offers them a phaeton full of cash?

The question for me isnt whether google will release a maps app. its whether apple will accept it. Apple never accepted google search. and I dont see them accepting another vastly superior google product either.

I think if they were to reject it, it would only help aid the "walled garden" issue - it will end in an antitrust case against Apple for not allowing users to choose what the product does.
