However...

If your Mac doesn't have USB3 or Thunderbolt it doesn't really give you a benefit. It would be nice if there was a Lightning to FW800 adapter but I'm not holding my breath. I still have a years worth of applecare left on my iMac so...I guess I'm not about to replace it yet.

That's fairly cheap for a mid range set of headphones. I usually opt for the Sennheiser CX300-II which usually retail for the $40 mark (or £25 here in the UK)

This.

$29 is not ridiculous for a set of earbuds. Try pricing out Skullcandy, Dr. Beats or some high end audiophile gear ( like custom molded in-ear monitors for $800).

It kills me that they could try to claim these as "features" of the new iPhone...

In what way are they not features? Obviously the loop thing is an accessory to the touch but how are faster connectors and new earphones not features?

Well, if the loop is only costing $10, my guess would be this:

Me, like a few others, just can't get the current earbuds to sit in my ear when I move. If I'm at my desk, they're fine. If I'm trying to exercise, they fall straight out!

I don't think it would be a lanyard either... You can pick one up for a few dollars from many stationary or novelty stores -- if that!!

Everybody is being so nice and helpful before the big event...:)

I can't wait until we get in the (my phone is sitting at some fed ex warehouse 5 miles from my house) phase :D

I'm actually excited to see new headphones, I wonder how good they are compared to the current ones.

----------

Put it this way, they can't be worse. I'm amazed so many people use those ear bleeders. They are just awful.

Call me what you will but Ultimate Ears makes a fine line. You get what you pay for and in this case, quality. :p

I've always find it strange how people can't stand the freebie Apple earphones - I find them very well balanced (at least at "normal" volumes - I try not to listen really loud). I bought some of those Sennheiser CX300II's and while they're good I find them over-bassy in comparison.

I design speakers for a living, won quite a few awards for it too so my judgement can't be that bad... :D

I recently purchased the Klipsch S4 and they were $70+ (but worth every penny). $29 for headphones doesn't seem that expensive. Wonder how they'll sound though.

The apple headphones have never fit in my ears... I have small ears and the factory headphones are too painful, and due to four years of selling home theater equipment before/during college... It made me into sort of an audiophile (audio snob)... Im too picky now.

The faster connector will most likely be due to USB 3.0, which a minority of people have. My MBP is from January, so it is the previous model to the current and I do not even have USB 3.0

If there is a thunderbolt cable available, I would definitely like to have that (we shall see though), even if it can't use the full potential of thunderbolt, it will still be better.

I don't want to be told the phone getting a new dock connector is a feature I should jump for joy on... when I have to buy several adapters to use it with my existing accessories. Dont get me wrong here though, I know they needed to do it, but I dont want them to try and shove it down my throat as a reason to buy the phone.

The idea of this being a "reason" to buy the new phone makes me think of how it is mentioned in this video posted under this thread. (The part I am referring to is after he starts to talk about the "iFhone 5") [Video's spelling]

Loop

My guess is that "loop" is short for a "hand loop" like small cameras have. Probably coming in a rainbow of color selections with a place to link it on the iPod touch.

Like this:

Maybe the loop accessory is the wristband that makes a new nano into a watch. Loop does't sound like it makes much sense for that, but you never now…

The current ear buds offered by Apple suck. But let them make these rumored ones wrap around neck style and all hell would break loose.

I have the Klipsch S4i... They definitely sound the best for the money.

And this is assuming the thunderbolt cable is available right away and not $50+ Cuz you can count on having to buy it separately...

So, not only do I have to buy at least 2 dock adapters (Car Head Unit Hookup and Zeppelin Air), I will most likely have to buy a $50+ thunderbolt cable in order to get any benefit out of the new dock adapter. My MBP is the generation 1 before the current one (no USB3).

This is why I do not wanting them claiming the new dock connector as a "feature"

WTF is with this new age of entitlement?

The day that word stops being tossed around as often as "literally hitler" will be a great day. I get reminded how "entitled" my generation is more often than I breathe and it's usually by members of my parent's generation who have already gone through the social security their parents saved, the social security they've saved and the social security I'm currently paying into that won't be around by time I get to sit down to ponder just how entitled I am. A generation that comes out of college with a full mortgage and no home. A generation with few job prospects and a broken economy, but we work our asses off anyway. But, NO, you hear one single guy complain about the price of headphones online and we must all just be such terrible people....

Claiming first reference to Thunderbolt connector

I'll claim the first reference to the connector being Thunderbolt, thank you. But USB 3 is probably more likely.

Thunderbolt needs 5 maybe 6 Transmit pins plus the same Receive pins (5 pins are data and 1 is ground which may be required for the Tx/Rx) There is also a power pin and a Hot Plug Detect pin that's 8 pins per side. Each side needs to be independent. Then add the ground. If the connector is actually duel sided that's 17 pins. Thunderbolt on your Mac is 20 pins but several are redundant ground pins. You could do Thunderbolt in 17 pins.

The connector would not need to be polarized like it is on your Mac if the phone can detect which side is Tx and Rx and auto switch, just like Ethernet on your Mac can use a crossover cable and detect that and switch for normal Ethernet.

I think you're mixing up features and benefits. A feature is a feature wether you want it or will use it or not. A benefit depends on your needs. I too have splashed out on some fancy earbuds so the new ones will not be used by me - I may keep them as a spare set or give them away - but they remain a feature and will benefit SOME people who will like them (assuming they are good - this is all speculative).

And, of course, there are small features and big ones. I doubt that a new iPhone which is going to have a larger screen, LTE and new A6 processor and all that jazz is going to be pushed heavily on the basis of a new dock connector and new earbuds! They're still features, of course, but they aren't likely to be the headline selling points.
