Apple had growth last quarter due to demand from China, largely due to record demand from iPad and Mac. It's not much of a surprise Apple would send the first iPad Air review units there. My guess is, U.S. reviewers will gets their units within the next few days.

That seems a bit weird to me. An American company sending their first review units to China, then the US a bit later. Maybe it’s courage...

The Air doesn't offer true stereo (and spatial) audio unlike the iPad Pro, due the speaker placement being only on the top and the bottom. It can get weird depending on how you rotate the iPad Air.

Forgive me, I'm confused .... the speaker placement on the Air is the same as the Pro. Why is the sound different? Does it lack the rotation cleverness of the Pro?

It's capitalism at work. With the upcoming iPhone 5G, I wouldn't be surprised if it played out the same. China now has over 110 million 5G subscribers, so it makes sense to send to where the demand is.

Any idea of release dates? I’ve been looking at the press releases for different countries. Although the new Air isn’t currently available on the education site it is mentioned as being available on the press releases. In the US and Australia the cheaper prices are mentioned but not on the European site. It makes me think that it’ll be after October 12th for release when the deal ends in the US. Hoping they will come sooner and be available with education pricing.

It's called Rose Gold, but it looks like the new Gold Apple has had for a little while... So is it (old) Gold, (old) Rose Gold, or (new) Gold? Does (new) Rose Gold = (new) Gold?

The Air only has two speakers: top and bottom. In portrait mode, it's difficult to reproduce left/right stereo, as @havenyoung has mentioned.

I think Apple should develop China only products that completely bifurcate from globally centered data protections. They should do so very publicly so the world knows to disassociate from those products understanding that those systems have no protections in place. Apple's growth shouldn't be hindered, but at the same time non-Chinese markets should get the protections and respect in privacy that Apple continues to espouse. Sensitive subject, yes, worth considering, why not.

Not convinced by that. Can’t imagine the gathering was that large... I’m sure they could have carried it out safely in the US.
Just China?
Apple had a media event in the US last Tuesday, but it was virtual. Sure it would have been nice to have an actual live event on campus, but also incredibly irresponsible to do so, since CDC recommendations don’t allow indoor gatherings of any size there at the moment.

I couldn’t imagine anyone in Apple’s management would be so stupid to even consider violating those recs just to show off some new products.

CA has prohibited gatherings of any kind. Santa Clara has prohibited indoor gatherings. The skies in California are red, if not gray due to wildfires. Apple is not about to encourage flying or gatherings in the country worst hit by COVID in the world.

I’m just glad to see they’re able to have in person media events in China. Hopefully we’re able to do this soon in the USA. Virtual events just aren’t the same

I don't know why they decided to go with sharp corners. Makes it extremely fatiguing to hold in your hand.

There were statements by Apple at the end of the event which said they’d taken COVID-19 precautions etc during filming, so there were gatherings. A small press gathering could have been done safely somewhere in the US surely... What do I know, I’m in the UK.

Some people confused about the speak system test of iPad Air and iPad Pro in the second video, I can explain it.

iPad Pro got 4 speakers, if you hold the iPad in landscape mode, they are located at top left, top right, bottom left, bottom right. But iPad Pro only got 2 speakers, located in left and right.

The differences is that if you hold iPad in landscape mode, both of them would provide stereo sound. But in portrait mode, only the iPad Pro would provide the stereo sound.

Prohibited gatherings refer to public events where you have new people coming and going. They don't include internal meetings among employees at a worksite, like filming of the Apple video.

Even if it were somehow safe to gather in the U.S., it's bad optics seeing as it's the worst hit country.
