Prohibited gatherings refer to public events where you have new people coming and going. They don't include internal meetings among employees at a worksite, like filming of the Apple video.

Even if it were somehow safe to gather in the U.S., it's bad optics seeing as it's the worst hit country.

Bad optics? I’m sorry I don’t speak corporate bulls hit. That’s twice now you’ve said it’s the worst hit country...

This is 10 grams heavier than my 3 year old 10.5 Pro. There's nothing "air" about it and I can't see a reason why I would upgrade for .4" more of screen real estate and loss of pro motion display.

The 10.9" iPad Air is 11-17 grams lighter than the iPad Pro 10.5".

There were statements by Apple at the end of the event which said they’d taken COVID-19 precautions etc during filming, so there were gatherings. A small press gathering could have been done safely somewhere in the US surely... What do I know, I’m in the UK.
The “gatherings” you mention were all Apple employees, not random reporters. And there weren’t likely more than half a dozen people in the room. I’d guess that there’s likely the person talking (e.g. Tim Cook), someone running the camera, and someone handling a boom mic. There’s probably a director/producer of some sort, and probably a few others (editor, sound tech, lighting person, assistant), but they don’t have to be in the same room, they could be 50 feet away. Apple is carefully controlling the circumstances in a way that they can’t if they had visitors who weren’t under their control.

If I were Apple, I’d probably want the immediate crew (camera/mic people) in quarantine for a couple weeks before I put them in the same room with Tim Cook - do you have any idea how much trouble it’d cause if someone got him sick (or any of the other top management)?

So, no, they can’t do (even a small) press gathering here in the US, right now, and no, the “gatherings” they had for filming the event shown Tuesday doesn’t mean they could do a press gathering here. Not unless by ”press” you mean “3 Apple employees that have been documented to have been quarantined for 2 weeks”.

Heck, the US can’t even reliably keep a few sports team quarantined in a special location designed for quarantine - someone still sneaks in or out and gets people exposed.

The filming was done BEFORE the wildfires started. You realize parts of southern California are like a dystopian sci-fi movie right now. Imagine the PR if Apple decided to violate the rules. What part or no gatherings are you struggling with? I don’t know why you are trying to die on this hill.

I would say they’re more subdued than dull. I fully expect in 3ish years time these chassis will be used for the regular iPad and will come in very bold colors like the iPod minis did.

Agreed. I’d love a Product Red!

Better yet - an ~9” iPad mini with this new design in Product Red.

I wonder how easy it is to use TouchID to authenticate when the iPad Air is in a case.
From the video, it appears that the index finger is the most natural for authentication. I can't imagine pressing my thumb against it to unlock when holding the iPad Air in my hands.

How about one of those OtterBox style cases. It’s going to be interesting. I must say I have very little use for the iPad Air but I just want to buy one. They look so awesome and the specs are crazy for a non pro model.

Also, it seems that the bezels on the Air are ever so slightly larger than the ones on the 11" Pro. I guess it makes up for the difference in display size (10.9 vs 11).

I realize Apple wants to differentiate the two slightly, but to artificially make the bezel larger, is really petty. If there's no technical reason, it should the same width.

The reason it has bigger bezels is that its 10.9" and not 11.0", and they didnt want to change the exterior width/height, otherwise they'd have to make a new magic keyboard thats slightly smaller and a whole range of other cases and future accessories.

The differentiation will be in the next Pro, which has long been rumored to be a mini-LED backlit display. I’m pretty sure there was a technical (or cost) reason to be at 10.9 instead of 11”.

I’m not sure if I could tell 0.1” difference if they were side by side. I really love what they did to the Air. Even though it’s not a pro iPad it’s significantly separate from the regular iPad now. Before it was just a better screen and faster processor but it looked exactly the same.

So the A14 is not ready in mass? That is why not yet known release date?
Say what? The A14 is the silicon running all of this. It’s design will have been finalized at least a year ago. The design of the iPhones and iPads will have been set at least six months ago. After that it’s finishing the software and getting the production process worked out 100%.

I wish the coming iPhone will have this TouchID button instead of FaceID...

There haven’t been any rumors of production issues at TSMC, so I don’t think it’s an A14 issue. TSMC has been as reliable a supplier as you could dream about.

Bleeding edge technology, available at scale, and seemingly flawless execution makes TSMC the perfect partner. To access that product, Apple apparently is willing to pay whatever TSMC has been asking. Kind of like Apple’s customers 🙂

If parts availability is the reason for the lack of a hard ship date—you may very well be right about that—I’d suspect maybe the new TouchID power button.

But more likely I think is that they simply haven’t started large scale production, and aren’t sure exactly what the ramp is going to look like yet, as suggested by @CarlJ a couple posts above.

Or maybe the touch ID nees a bigger bezel.
