I'm tempted to get iPhone 8, because clearly it will be the LAST iPhone with the built-in TouchID home button, which is mature, perfected and refined technology.

The FaceID is clearly not perfected and refined technology. Federighi demonstrated that. Maybe it will be in 2 or 3 years.

But is the iPhone 8 that much different (for the price) compared to the iPhone 7? On the exterior they look identical. Even the camera is the same? Or should I just go with the iPhone 7 and save some money? Is there a side by side comparison of features between 7 and 8?

I'm still rocking a lovely 6S.
There is a compare all models page on the Apple website that will answer all those questions.

I keep saying that the iPhone line up is wayyy to fragmented. Maybe next year they'll just move forward with a single iPhone and the 4.7 and 5.5 phones will fall to the waste side. But I won't hold my breath.

What possible difference does it make to you? Why does it matter? I'm quite happy that I can buy a brand new and unlocked 6s at a really good price directly from Apple. How does it improve your life if Apple were to *not* sell that phone?

What craziness are we living in where a phone is more powerful than a MacBook Air?

The crazy thing is exactly that, where phones that can't be used for rendering, working with virtual machines and all that stuff are more powerful than computers. Okay, a MBA is not exactly a computer you'd use for that tasks, but it's still a computer you can work with.

What part of checking email at a red light is driving? I use CarPlay and request directions and change music all of the time...which is no different from using my built in car software to do the same, actually a bit easier.

Still highly illegal. You are a barbarian, unfit for civilized society. Put down your phone while operating your automobile, please.

I think a lot of people will default to the iPhone 8 ... because the X is too pricy.

Still at these prices I'm seriously reconsidering an Android phone.
Apple is being completely bailed out by the US carriers and AUP - imagine if these new phones required $700+ upfront investment - their sales would take nose dive.

Buyers of a new 6S beware. iOS 11 will
undoubtedly slow it down to the point where it will be annoying to use.... and you won't be able to go back to iOS 10 in the future. The useful life of the 6S is short it you are determined to hitch a ride on the iOS update train

In Sep 2017 you can't really make this comparison with a straight face anymore, unless you fell asleep in 2011 and woke up halfway through today's keynote.

The iPhone X, with its 10nm fabrication, is one of the most advanced computing devices mankind has ever seen and will help push mobile computing ahead over the next year, until it's updated with something even more amazing. The Air is a legacy device from half a decade ago, maybe longer depending on which specs we're talking about.

Every part of it.

As soon as you sit in the car and turn the ignition on, it is driving. Even if you are parked in a lot and just waiting for the A/C or heat to kick in. They can ticket you in that position if you are not wearing a seat-belt.

Even at the red-light stop, you are sitting in a deadly machine. Email!

At 55+ mph, even looking down at the gauges to check the speed is a distraction, but we have to do this; that is why HUD is a good idea.

Tim Cook's world...........

Can't innovate? He broke the consumer's will, and the psychological $1k price ceiling.

He's the Steve Jobs of accounting; delivering less and less each year.

This is so incredibly wrong... In fact, my car's engine is off at a red light. I don't care what you can be ticketed for, that doesn't change the physical act of driving. You may mean to say "operating a vehicle", in which case just being in the car with your keys (even in the trunk), counts. At 55+ mph my car can drive itself, not that I take my eyes off the road at all except to change something on the radio, like we've been doing for about 80 years...

You're really starting to remind me of those people who opposed using electronic devices during take off and landing because they distract you from listening to the safety instructions.

I guess this gives consumers more options but I thought they would at least get rid of the 6s/6s plus.

Well, I am leaning more and more towards the iPhone 8 Plus, this alone would be a major upgrade from my iPhone 6Plus. Sure its the same size..but just so much faster, the better camera, and - for me - it will have "new features" that I missed with 6S, 7. Even the home button for me will be "new" I kinda think of it that way.

The X, sure it's nice..I won't lie, I've been a bit concerned of the reported "problems with OLED" the delay, now confirmed as it won't be available until Nov 3. I just would hate to drop $1000+ on this only to have issues...big fear. I could be wrong. But I'll wait until they master this design and then I'll reconsider next year. I also hope they find a way to "hide" the front cameras, sensors behind the OLED?? Position them elsewhere. Maybe, I don't know if thats possible?? Seeing a video playing in landscape mode, that top "notch" just irked me. I also wonder how apps like iMovie would work, other photo editing apps where that black notch may hide actual portions of the app? Only guessing about that..maybe app designers will find a way around it?

Of course I do worry about the X going on sale 12:01am on Oct 27, within 3-4 minutes it may be backordered, delivery pushed back to Mid Dec, Early 2018! Yes, this will sell.

Not to say I may run into slow or fail page loading come 3am my time come early Friday morning for iPhone 8Plus, I'm sure I will. I hope to get a Sept 22 delivery..at this point heck I wouldn't be too ticked if it came between the 25-29.

This could be you, friend. Perhaps you could check what's new on twitter at a later time, hmm? Join the rest of us in the civilized world. You'll love it here, I'm sure of it.

CarPlay does not have access to Twitter. Or email for that matter. Maybe you should learn something about this stuff?

Seriously, just stop with your ridiculous judgements. I've been driving for 30 years and have never been involved in any sort of accident of any kind....and considering my latest car has autonomous driving assisting me...

This is another reason I probably need to upgrade. I have no idea how IOS 11 will work on my 2014 6 Plus.
Almost afraid to try to be honest.

I love coming to MacRumors to see the “fanboys” lose their collective **** over “Timmy is the worst!” “Jobs would never do this!” “Apple is doomed!” The iPhone X IS expensive, but it’s packed with a ton technology, that even a year ago would’ve been unheard of. And yet, despite the complaining of how expensive the iPhone X is, Apple now has a iPhone lineup starting as low as $349 - and all people can do is complain about fragmentation. I also love the complaint that under Jobs Apples product line was streamlined and simple, and now it’s a mess - as if providing options makes things fragmented and a mess! Let’s take a look at Apple’s Mac lineup before Jobs stepped down as CEO:

MacBook Pro 13, 15 and 17 inches - 3 distinct models
MacBook Air 11 and 13 inches - 2 distinct models
MacBook
iMac 21.5 and 27 inches - 2 distinct models
Mac Mini
Mac Pro

And this only includes the distinct models, not the plethora of hardware configurations within each model. And yet, no one complained of fragmentation then. And why? Because that lineup isn’t fragmented, it provides options. Ironically, the current iPhone lineup is LESS “fragmented” than the above Mac lineup

iPhone SE
iPhone 6s and 6s Plus
iPhone 7 and 7 Plus
iPhone 8 and 8 Plus
iPhone X

That doesn’t look too complicated to me - in fact it looks quite logical.

But to each their own. For many of you, Apple will be unable to do anything right as long as Tim Cook is CEO. I can pretty much guarantee that when (not if, but when) Apple releases the long awaited (and yes, neglected) modular Mac Pro, even if it is the greatest computer ever built, you all will find something to bitch about.

I think they should've nixed the 7. It's basically an 8, whereas the 6s and SE still seem to make sense at their price and features

U text. U drive. U pay.

U R better than this, friend.

I am duly impressed by your long streak of 30-years + of texting while driving without an accident, but tomorrow, your luck could run out. Be safe out there.

Meh, I’ll stick with my S8 and iPad Pro to get the best of both worlds. The iPhone X brings nothing new to the table, and Samsung Pay actually works in places most people shop.

This iPhone lineup reminds me of the large and fragmented Mac lineup of former Apple CEO Gil Amelio in 1997 that Steve Jobs was disappointed in and wanted to streamline soon after his return.

Those product lines were killing the company though. Apple keeps making more and more money from the iPhome. That’s why they keep bumping up the price. I’m not happy about it but it’s easy to see why they are doing it.
