Protected by the pouch lining, although you Americans really should stop with the magnet strip every other country have been using the chip for the last 10 years and are now paying wireless through rfid, so you're using a 2 generation old technique of paying.
But it’s our god given right to use magnetic strips.

This feels like Apple sticking a thumb in the customer’s eye. They take away something truly innovative and useful, give us something gimmicky and useless, and then slap the same name on it. 🙄

You do realize non-contact charging is being on worked on? When people say they want wireless charging without wires - that is what they are talking about. Charging the phone from in your pocket, on your table, etc.
So we can waste more energy through the air? Cant wait! /s

Wow, half this thread is you getting extremely defensive towards people criticising this product.
Why so much cope?
It’s just silly, the way people post without a shred of thinking. It annoys me.

there is criticism, which is fine. And there is blindly throwing tantrum.

Hi all,
Wanna know how does the MagSafe works with older iPhones since is backward compatible? Does it “latch” to the back? Would need to have those magnets to work? Does it charges at 15w?

On the other hand, Apple is making their wallet!! I could see people just buys them as standalone use. Since it got magnets, it can have 2 magnetic wallets sticking back to back...

Tim Apple thinks it's funny when we or kids or parents or pets or neighbor's best friend's baby sitter trips over the cord & send our laptops flying. Also, he said it was wasteful and bad for the environment.
Saying “Tim apple” in these forums is pretty much equivalent in wit and intelligence to wearing a “boobs inspector” t-shirt.

Apple's new MagSafe charger and cases have begun arriving to some customers earlier than expected, and images of the accessories have started to surface on Twitter. The photos provide a first look at the products in real-world use.

As of writing, some MagSafe cases are also available for pickup at select Apple Stores in countries like the United States, Canada, and Germany.

Filip Chudzinski, developer of Apple Watch band app Bandbreite and editor of Apple Store-focused Twitter account Storeteller, has shared a number of high-quality images of the MagSafe charger and the Deep Navy Silicone Case for iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro.

YouTube channel DerDaku has shared a MagSafe charger unboxing video in German:

MagSafe is set to improve the charging experience on ‌iPhone 12‌, with magnets that are optimized for alignment and efficiency, and the technology still supports existing Qi charging mats.

MagSafe also brings a new ecosystem of magnetic cases and accessories that snap onto the ‌iPhone 12‌. This includes new silicone, leather, and clear cases that easily connect onto the back of the iPhone, as well as a separate leather wallet accessory. Third-party accessories from Belkin and OtterBox have also been announced.

The images reveal a ring containing MagSafe's magnets on the interior of the case and confirm that Apple's new silicon cases cover the bottom of the iPhone for the first time.

The MagSafe charger also seems to be made of matte silver aluminium, unlike the polished metal seen on Apple's similar Apple Watch charging puck.

How long is the cable?

and it’s gotten nowhere because no matter what you do, you can’t overcome the inverse square law, because physics.

Exactly. I've been wondering the same thing. Do you need to hold down the cable when you lift up the phone or pull the charger off the phone and set the charger back down? Seems like a hassle. With a Qi charger you just pick up the phone.
Apple is going to start selling double sided tape or reinvent velcro.

That makes no sense. These aren't being included in the box with every phone. They're optional.
That's a fair point. However, how many people will buy one of these MagSafe chargers who otherwise wouldn't have purchased an additional charger?

We have chips and rfid. The stripe is still there for certain situations.

New Rule: you can't call these things wireless until they come without a wire. Doesn't a small little wire look so minimal, clean and slick compared to a hockey puck people are going to start carrying around?
True! MagSafe isn't actually a wireless product. Not sure why some people are thinking and referring to it as wireless. ???
When MagSafe was on MacBook it was never called "wireless".
MagSafe for iPhone 12 isn't wireless, it's not even "untethered", however the device does free up the lightning port for people who still use/prefer wired headphones.

If you don’t want it, you don’t have to buy it?
Correct! It's optional. You can still use a Qi charging mat or a lightning cable. There will be (or already are) other charging devices that allow magnetic connection too. Belkin have a 3-in-1 charging stand (which looks very nice! :D ). There's a car vent mount too.

I don't get it. So you get this round bit that you attach to your iPhone, and there is a cable that you plug into a USB-C charger. So can someone explain to me how this is "wireless"? There's a cable from the wall to the USB-C charger, then another cable from the USB-C charger all the way to the phone. Cables all the way.

My wife constantly complains about cables lying around. I can see here buying something like this because it is "wireless", assuming it gets rid of the cables, and returning it straight to the store. Because there are just as many cables as before.
So what about wireless internet? You don’t like WiFi either?

Looks like Apple will be selling airpods cases later for MagSafe that attach to phone or at least has patented it. Starting to make more sense but just have no desire to use a phone case.
