Can we get it back on MacBooks again
Tim Apple thinks it's funny when we or kids or parents or pets or neighbor's best friend's baby sitter trips over the cord & send our laptops flying. Also, he said it was wasteful and bad for the environment.

Even many of the Apple faithful are confused as to what this product will do, won’t do and how it operates. Seems to be a very amateurish marketing communications effort on the part of Apple.

I don’t think we’re confused at all. We very clearly see that MagSafe, at least with the charging cable, is quite useless and really doesn’t offer any advantages beyond the current Lightning cable. If you like a magnetically attached wallet, MagSafe is your thing though. Not for me, but I’m sure others will get it.

I do agree with another poster that Apple is just preparing us for a port-less iPhone soon.

I can't believe the price of this thing and it doesn't come with a power brick you mean?

Meh. It's $58 with a 20w adapter.

A 1m cable is inconvenient at best and practically useless at worst in many, many situations.

This sounds like the most personal use case I've ever heard. A 1m cable is a godsend if you need a cable 1m in length.

yawn.... Don’t waste your cash. An unnecessary product. In my opinion.

Thanks for adding the "in my opinion" at the end. At least you're consistent in your narrative.

This really isn't hard to understand. It's an array of magnets in the phones that allows a) 15w charging, b) a way for case adhesion, and c) a way for other accessories to be attached to the back of the phone. I know magnets are magic and all, but it's not rocket science.

"Many of the Apple faithful" will watch the cleverly-marketed video that shows the wallet snapping on the back, and will spend about $150 on iPhone accessories. In my opinion.

This seems to directly counteract the environmental benefits of not including chargers with new iPhones. Are these not using more materials than a simple charging cable? And is it really any less convenient to plug in a lighting cord to the bottom of the phone to charge?

That makes no sense. These aren't being included in the box with every phone. They're optional.

Phew, so glad Apple solved a problem no one had...laying a phone on a charging mat.

Spoken like someone who is totally cool with 7.5w wireless charging. (Not judging; I am very cool with it)

The only thing that makes me nervous about this charger, is that it uses the same wire that my regular apple usbc- lightning cable uses which tends to get stripped over time. But unlike that one, this one cannot be detached from the charger. So you’d have to buy a whole new unit. And for alot more money than just replacing the wire.
Is this something you are going to be connecting and disconnecting over and over and over.

I’m sure someone else posted this, but USB-C to lightning chargers are still much faster than this, right? Even if I get a iPhone 12 Pro or something I’m not bothering with this MagSafe stuff

I don't get it. So you get this round bit that you attach to your iPhone, and there is a cable that you plug into a USB-C charger. So can someone explain to me how this is "wireless"? There's a cable from the wall to the USB-C charger, then another cable from the USB-C charger all the way to the phone. Cables all the way.

My wife constantly complains about cables lying around. I can see here buying something like this because it is "wireless", assuming it gets rid of the cables, and returning it straight to the store. Because there are just as many cables as before.

Yep, you’re right. There’s nothing really “wireless” about this as a practical matter. Seems almost like a proof of concept rather than anything useful.

Has anyone had a hands-on close look at the "clear" case. Last year's version got terrible reviews. Is this year's version better quality, less slippery and less likely to yellow?

This year’s version has really a ugly white circle on the back to be MagSafe compatible, so that automatically eliminates it from any consideration. If I were a clear case guy, I’d go for something like Caudabe‘s Lucid Clear. So much of a cleaner look.

So...this won't work with all of those old chargers that people have laying around. And...the cable that comes with your new iPhone won't work with them, either. Hilarious!
You can charge iPhone 12 with any Qi charger. 🙄

I think, in my case anyway, this is for charging overnight where speed isn’t as crucial.

Do you have to have a MagSafe case, in order to use the MagSafe charger puck? Can you just use the MagSafe charger on regular plastic cases which I now use on my Mophie wireless pad?
I guess you can but it won’t be fast charging.

Agree, but if somebody hates MagSafe I'm sure they'd dislike the added weight. I know it's minimal, but it matters (I think MagSafe is great).
Even though you want to charge your iPhone in a traditional ways (wire or wireless) you can still benefit from MagSafe on cases and mounts.

That's true, but if you want to take full advantage of the Magsafe Charger, you need a MagSafe case. I usually use the leather cases but thinking clear of I go with the new blue version.

Do you have any direct links or sources indicating Apples clear case started to yellow? Because if you peruse the iPhone accessory forum, members were discussing that there was no issues with yellowing even after a year of use. It’s typically third party cases that are the culprit.

I think Apple solved that concern by no longer include the extension cable. So you are stuck closer to the outlet anyway with a shorter cable.... It's better for the environment as well .../s

No personal experience with Apple "Clear" cases, but have read lots of critical reviews of the older ones. The biggest complaint seems to be how slippery they were. If anyone has had a close look of the new ones, that would be great to hear. I suppose any yellowing would have more to do with exposure to UV than sitting in your pocket.

If there's less accessories and features in a new product you are paying the price increase even if it's the same price of the last product. It's just that it's not in your face.
How so? We got more features from iPhone every year.

And even this year we don’t get a charger but we also get more storage at the same price.

So, you have to buy a apple card holder integrated to your phone or find a wallet that is Safe-from-iPhone-destroying-cards-feature™ to prevent them to do any harm to the cards? A bit ridiculous, no? Also, magnets can mess up a lot of things, not just cards, and **** to get stuck on it, depending how strong it is...
Who said you “have to”? Paranoid much?

How do you expect to charge anything without any wires at all? Were you expecting the electricity to magically flow through the air and into your phone?
You do realize non-contact charging is being on worked on? When people say they want wireless charging without wires - that is what they are talking about. Charging the phone from in your pocket, on your table, etc.

How is that different than Qi chargers?
