Stupid question. Does the transparent case really show that magnet so much or is that just marketing to highlight that there is a magnet „hidden“? If it does show the magnet so much then Jikes ugly!
Transparent magnets....now that would truly be magical.

I know, Im just blown away at the amazing technological advancement, its incredible, if Apple keep up this level of innovation they should discover the usb-c soon
consumers dont care
This does indeed look like a two hand operation as opposed to a charging mat - the convenience remains to be seen. Hopeful though.
As with the Apple Watch, there will be stands for it. Which is what I am hoping for and which would alleviate a two hand operation as well as having somewhere to place it on the night stand.

I agree. I think it was a combination of the success with the their Apple Watch charging system and the failure of their Air Power product — they probably saw the limitations of current wireless charging and held off on releasing a product until they could make it better. Classic Apple — their patience pays off.
And as with the Solo Loop band, another obvious kind of thing, it really does require a company with the economy of scale to make it work and be worth it. Making a lot of different size wrist bands for a watch no one buys doesnt make sense. Adding a lot of magnets to a smartphone that will not sell well also doesnt make a lot of sense.
Apple’s economy of scale is what makes it work, and it will help a lot of small third-party accessory makers.

My 8 plus was down to 85% after 6-8 months of wireless charging so changed back to standard charging via a cable. Still on 85% 18months later.
My Xs is at 85% and I have never used wireless charging. 🤷‍♂️

Excuse me? What good does that do me? So instead of plugging a cable in the phone, I attach a round plate to the phone, which has a cable to plug into a USB-C charger, which has a cable to plug into the wall. So I'm paying £39 for the pleasure of attaching some round disk connected to the wall with two cables, instead of plugging in a cable connected to the wall with two cables? Feels extremely stupid to me.
The point is that it will presumably take less effort to just place your phone onto the wireless charging pad and just lift it off the pad when you are done,

Vs plugging in a cable into your phone to charge it, and then unplugging it when you are done charging.

Your usb-c charger should be directly plugged in to the wall socket, unless you are running it off a multi-socket extension.

It's up to the user to decide whether this is worth their time and money. For me, I admit I do find wireless charging more convenient than wired when charging my phone overnight, and Anker-brand wireless charging pads are dirt cheap on amazon, though I suspect the extra heat produced this way may have led to my phone's battery capacity degrading a little faster than it would.

i thought the magnet is in the Phone.
It is. That is how the magnet in the case sticks to the phone. Unlike old cases that required the case to wrap around the front of the phone to stay in place the magnet in the phone holds the magnet in the case.

A reach of 1m is “the most personal use case ever”? Really? Thanks for the laughs!

Nope. What your post said was “A 1m cable is inconvenient at best and practically useless at worst.” If you can’t make a 1m cable work, then yes, I’d suggest it’s a personal use case. Just like me buying a .5m cable for my car to minimize the extra length.

If you want the cable to be removable, fine. That makes sense in this type of device - but not because Apple have chosen a ridiculous fixed cable length in this iteration.

  • 15w wireless fast charging
  • Drop phone on the charger and it finds the right position to charge.
  • Cases snap onto the phone as opposed to you having to bend them around the phone to get them on.
  • Official mag safe accessories just snap onto the back of the phone or MagSafe cases.
  • No more grippy phone holders for your car, just drop the phone on the mount.
  • Possibly leads us to a future iPhone without ports.
Seriously if you’re upgrading from a 6S your mind is about to go 🤯.

if you haven’t already watch the keynote again.
GREAT post for all the "Why do I need this stupid thing" posters.

I think the third parties will make MagSafe a practical thing. I can see car mounts being used (like belkin) that will hold the iPhone and charge it at the 15w.

Protected by the pouch lining, although you Americans really should stop with the magnet strip every other country have been using the chip for the last 10 years and are now paying wireless through rfid, so you're using a 2 generation old technique of paying.
I’m in the U.S. and all my cards have chips and are tap to pay, so not sure what your on about.

With the Apple solution, there is no "just lifting it off the pad" - you can't. You have to physically pull apart the phone from the pad, akin to pulling out a cable from a lightning port. If you actually did use a lightning cable, you at least use longer ones and at least with some practicality still use the phone whilst charging - with the MagSafe, that is very impractical given the 1m ~ 3ft cable. Only Apple!!

I exclusively use "wireless" charging [I prefer to call it tetherless charging] and all my pads are actually stands and I never miss finding the sweet-spot for charging; if I miss the sweet-spot, I didn't put it on the stand!!

I also struggle to understand the wallet attachment; do you have that connected to the phone alll of the time, i.e. when putting into and pulling out of your pockets? If so, seems to me that is going to be an annoying snag during that process?

  • slightly quicker charging - hardly what I would call fast. Phones today are being shipped with 45 & 65w chargers and Oppo have a 125w one. I wouldn't describe it as wireless or even tetherless?
  • has anyone ever really had a problem with not finding the charging spot?
  • I would rather cases were wrap-around so the protect the screen edge?
  • Why would you want a wallet that sticks to your phone? Credit cards are not needed if you are using any of NFC payments methods that Apple promote constantly? I can see that being a right pain in time pushing and pulling from your pocket.
  • There have been magnetic phone holders for all eternity
  • There may be one day a portless iPhone, but err, this isn't one, so not a benefit, unless you feel the need to practice for a couple of years?

Will there be any issue using the MagSafe charger with an older iPhone? Currently have an iPhone XS Max and thinking about buying one of these to use as a wireless charger before eventually upgrading my phone. I currently do not have any wireless charger.
You can still use it as a regular QI charger.

Never? Wow. There will always be one I guess.
