Does any one of you actually use animojis? i mean on a daily basis!
really not caring for memoji.

Great, more silly features...
What is even appealing about this? I mean, it's kinda cool when you first see it and maybe laugh a bit, but for me such things wear off rather quickly.

I really wish there was some kind of modular design to both macOS and iOS where you could pick what you want to install and use on your device. (I'm not that naive, but one can fantasise)

So Samsung purchased prime real estate in the uncanny valley whereas Apple only has a vallyside view.

The whole premise of this article is stupid.

Not necessarily MacRumors fault, but more of a sign of the times I guess.

No need for concessions. I think your first sentence says it all.

If MacRumors wants to showcase the new upcoming Memoji then fine (and well done to Apple for adding so much flair). But this unnecessary comparison with the Samsung implementation plays out like bragging rights to the best GI Joe. So sad.

Do adults even use this? Mass stupidification...

Yes, and unfortunately, another yes. The technology that powers this is a breakthrough however. Having a phone with the ability to look at the users face and detect if they are laughing, smiling, frowning, etc. will result in an even smarter OS with smarter apps.

For instance if I fire up an app and go from smiling to frowning/grimacing that might be the right time for the app to ask if I need help or to simply relay the information to the developers so they can use the data when collected en masse to help locate areas within the app that are, for whatever reason, frustrating for their users.

How about going back to making Macs?

How about simply think the reality that the ones who are doing iOS features like Memojis are probably just apple employees who are specialized doing graphic design......... you know, they have nothing to do or contribute anything with Macs (hardware)

And this is exactly why the iPhone X failed to meet sales projections. People pay $1000 for powerful features, not a cute trick or toy. Craig Federighi's "Ho Ho HO" became a rally cry for the iPhone X as a joke, not a serious smart phone.

I just don't think Steve Jobs would have been so giddy like a 13 year old girl about this stuff like Tim Cook & MacRumors is.

Meanwhile MacOS 10.13.6 and Mohave are sidebar stories. Just change the name of the site to iPhoneRumors.com or better yet, Giddytoys.com. :D

It didn't fail anything, so basically a straw man argument.

The point is that Apple is wasting recourse on this instead on things that will A) make their clients happy and / or more productive B) make them more money C) See A.

They know their clients MORE THAN YOU, and that's what they are doing.
You are not "all Apple clients", do you have a some kind of grandiosity delusion?

Obviously Samsung failed. Didn’t even need to look at comparisons to know their mobile division is a failing pile of garbage that should be shuttered and sold for scrap.
[doublepost=1528858388][/doublepost]Features aren’t a zero sum game. Just because feature A is introduced on an iPhone doesn’t mean resources were taken from a Mac. That’s the dumbest claim in the history of claims. Complete and utter failure in logic. Probably the largest failure in logic in the history of the human race.

Does anyone really care about animated characters? No. So why the hype. How many people/resources is Apple employing on this that could be far better utilised elsewhere?
To you and all the other self-righteous cranks who’ve appointed themselves as the fun police: ENOUGH! Just because something died inside of you years ago, killing off whatever sense of joi de vie or whimsy you had left, stop trying to ruin it for everyone else. Apple has always injected a certain element of fun and approachability into their devices, from the friendly icon and text-to-voice gimmick of the first Mac to the bad dad jokes that Siri would tell, this is part of Apple’s DNA. And before you start whining that making meMoji its taking valuable resources away from building the next MacPro or whatever else is on your list of “important” projects, stop and think about how ridiculous that sounds before you waste time typing it.

I'm confused by the something the article said.

The decision to limit animoji and memoji to the iPhone X doesn't actually have anything to do with the TrueDepth scanner on the iPhone X. Because neither animoji nor memoji actually uses that system. You can unlock your phone in the dark, using FaceID, because the system includes an IR flood illuminator. Animoji and memoji, OTOH, don't work in the dark - they require ambient lighting to function. Meaning, they don't actually use the TrueDepth system. Meaning, they'd work just fine on the iPhone 8 series (with the same A11 chip the iPhone X has) and probably even older iPhones.

So, justifying Apple's restriction of of animoji and memoji to the iPhone X by claiming that they require the X's 3D camera system is very misleading. The restriction is purely a business decision.

Reminds me of this, which is still true today

- Microsoft: we are making square wheels
- Apple: we are making them round
- Microsoft: but we were first!
Your absolute statement is really just your opinion. There is certainly an opposite opinion held by MANY people, that Apple is basically trailing in most categories. An example is Siri, which is garbage. Apple Maps is still garbage. How about "Mobile Me?"

It's not that Apple is on version 2.0 of Animojis after less than a year.

It's that Apple has left products like the Mac Mini in purgatory for 4 years.

THAT'S the issue.

And yes... we know that the team who builds Animojis isn't the same team who builds Mac hardware. But sometimes people gotta vent!

Mods... feel free to delete any and all comments that mention the word "Mac" in this thread. The feelings have been expressed. :)
And you can continue to cry about it but I’ll go with Apple on this one. If it’s not done, it’s not important to their overall (working) strategy.

The Mac sells just fine as is and updates will come when the time is right.

Until then, get used to features like this. Many people want them and like them, clearly.

You think if the Mac updates you want were important Apple wouldn't address them? Again, Apple is running a business and executing a strategy.

*properly: A term that Apple defines, not the user. Because they know what is proper as opposed to what people want and need.

Where have you been? That’s always been Apples mantra. The user doesn’t know what they want till we give them it. I’m guessing after a billion iOS device sales they think that’s working for them.

I can't believe companies are wasting time and resources making this crap. They really have run out of ideas. It's neat for about 10 seconds and then you never use it again.
Wasting time? Are you even interested in technology? Animoji is actually a “smart” way to ease the tech behind FaceID into the public. You might only see the silly Animoji, but it’s not a waste of time at all, the fact that Apple has a face tracking system (including eyes, brows, and even tongue) in your pocket.

I don’t know. As someone who is fascinated by tech, I always find Apple’s methodology into making technology accessible and fun to be ingenious. Making old PC boxes is boring, nothing new tech in those.

Siri is “garbage” because the better ones, Google Assistant and Alexa, got better by encroaching privacy to the max. It’s natural then that Apple is behind due to their stance in privacy.

Apple maps is great in supported countries, which unfortunately not as widespread as Google’s. It’s expected since Google is already in that field a lot longer than Apple.

MobileMe? Are you on a timeslip?

You mean the Steve Jobs that giddily prank called Starbucks when unveiling the iPhone? That Steve Jobs?

It's funny people presume what Steve will do. You know, we're already in peak of phone's hardware. Apple has been top for yearssss. It's all about software and millennials are growing up. Old nerds are getting older and dying and they are actually just minuscule ratio over ordinary people. What i'm saying is it's okay to catch what millenials and ordinary humans would like to do in our current era.

Did you know that you can make face id without pouring money into animoji? There are other more interesting technology avenues to pursue. Just because animoji is a waste of time doesn't mean that the alternative is to make "boring PC boxes". For instance, Google is kicking apple's but in all things AI. It's not even close.

That’s actually very beautiful, and showcases the versatility and convenience of usb C. I can connect over 10 peripherals just by plugging in two cables (and I am pretty sure that can further be consolidated into one). As opposed to have to plug and unplug each of them separately.

I think you just made the best case ever for Apple dropping everything in favour of USB c.
