The reason folks are frustrated with this article is that you can't help but wonder what resources Apple spend on this crap? Yet, we can't get a simple update to the MacBook Air or Mac Mini. We can't get mouse support for iOS on iPads even though jail breaks have existed since iPad launch in 2010.

I guess this stuff appeals to someone, and Apple feels they need to keep creating new customizable emoji to compete. Seems like a huge waste of time to me......but, so does the obsession with thinner laptops in shades of rose gold sporting unusable keyboards that fail when exposed to a speck of dust. Misplaced priorities.

Because graphic artists design Mac Minis? Apple devoted the resources they see for for what brings in the money that supports their enormous staff, and one month of iPhone sales pulls in more money than probably all the profit from every iteration of the Mac Mini OR MacBook Air that was ever put to market. If it really bothers you that much, it’s not like it’s hard to find a competitor. We all know what we are signing up for, and it certainly isn’t Apple looking to Cydia for inspiration.

This article is embarassing, and it’s even more embarrassing that Apple is investing resources to develop this crap while Siri lags behind the competition and there are so many shortcomings in iOS.

It's a shame these are only on the X. They could have added the Memoji to older devices with a set of pre-canned animations so that we could all create our own Memoji and use them. That wouldn't be very 'Apple' though would it.

Anpanman for the win!

Wow. Take 5 seconds to actually think about who might enjoy this. How about kids, families, or people who want to have fun? Just because you won't use something doesn't mean millions of other won't.
I think you've completely missed the point. No one is anti Emoji here. The point of the matter is that a giant company like Apple, a tech giant, are placing such emphasis on something that is so gimmicky. They should leave the Emojis to a third party app developer and then focus on making technology that blows us away.

I feel we're entering a new level of stupid with the amount of investment in this "feature". Sure, it's great for kids but the way Apple tout this.....well I'm speechless.

Having said that, with todays state of politics, addition to photographing food, "hipster" and "millennial" trends, I fear the movie, "Idiocracy", is pushing its way towards reality.

I fear for my son....

XXI century: war, poverty, animal cruelty, crime, emoji...

Yay! All for the same reason, money! I think Apple, Samsung, Google and other biggest companies should start working very closely together on better wink & tongue tracking.

Because this seems to be very important for humans, so I could finally stop worrying about climate change and start winking properly to a $1000 brick!

(Well. you could have the same effect for free by winking to the mirror, but your wink wouldn't be saved in the cloud!)

The end of humanity is near...

Could Apple just lience out OSX already? Seriously Once apon a time when they were a fraction of the size they updated EVERY computer line once a year. Now that they are ten times the size, it seems they are updating ONE computer line every year. If they are no longer a hardware company can they just release MacOS so we can update our own hardware. It would be nice to duel bookt into MacOS and windows without hacks and unstability.

Daphuq? Why are they putting time, money and energy into this non feature that nobody gives a flying toss about, when they could be upgrading the Mac mini, no new design needed, and sell a ton of Macs instead.

It’s depressing that, instead of hardware development and upgrading the MAC fleet, they waste time, money and resources on a worthless feature that only a few would ever care about. Emoji? Not for me or anyone I know... This kind of feature is a gimmick, not useful in any way.

Apple, focus instead on your dying MAC’s and imperfections in your MAC OS. Give us a real reason to continue as an Apple customer instead of discouraging our loyalty.

They're both crap. Useless junk for kiddies. How many grown ass adults actually use animoji's? "I'm just dying to send a talking dinasour to all my friends!", said no one ever. It's a novelty, and a bad one at that. Apple may have whipped up some fantastic new camera technology but it's clearly being wasted on this childish gimmick.

I think we are clearly entering a new era of stupidity. This is a low, the likes of which I thought Apple would never stoop to. It's utterly banal, inane, brain dead, and moronic.

How about they spend their time fixing up Siri instead? I thought the future was AI, not reheated Nintendo Miis from a decade ago.

Can't really say which I prefer at this point, as I see some benefits of both approaches. And though I have an X but have not even been tempted to use animoji, I'm glad to see the technology being pushed forward on both platforms. Competition and all that.

As a few folks here have expressed, it's not the fact that one can do such things with a ~ thousand dollar device, but the potential for more, ah, practical uses in the future. It's hard (for me) to grasp the real potential at this point, but my sense is there will be some pretty good uses of this technology as it develops further.

One perhaps mundane example struck me a few days ago when I was sitting through an annual first aid refresher training course, as required by the company I work for. We watched probably half a dozen animated videos to demonstrate various aspects of CPR, wound treatment, airway management, etc. The instructor started the course by saying that the videos were much improved over the 'old' videos we'd seen for several years running. Though arguably improved, they were still pretty lifeless (sorry), and could have been more detailed. Could some form of this technology (not limited to facial expressions) help in creating and keeping current this and other categories of training videos? I would think so.
Or online technical support, as an adjunct to live chat. Again, it's hard for me to grasp the potential.

But the iPhone actually seems to be a good platform for introducing and testing the technology with a wide audience. Making it fun pretty much guarantees it will be tried and used by many. I'm expecting that we'll eventually see applications within the Mac platform at some point, both from Apple and third-party developers. For someone that doesn't use this particular feature, I'm pretty excited about watching it unfold.

Actually, I think it is AI. ;)
It's just that we start with games, and end up with more serious things. For Apple, creating Memojis, is like a beta test of what will come next.
Eg, we will probably soon scan our faces to put on another persons head. This is already known as Deepfake, and we have only seen the beginning.

Apple might not always be the first to the market with a product/feature, but when they release it, it’s done properly!

Too bad that doesn't apply to computers anymore. (Yes I went there) I will admit that AirPods and Apple Pencil are truly innovative. Other than those two I can't think of anything else comparable to the Jobs era in terms of innovation.

Memoji iOS feature team are mostly apple employees who are specialized with animation and graphic design. They are not the one who are tinkering with AI stuffs especially with core-level stuffs.

I guess were just forgetting the watch exists too. You aren't going to see something wild and amazing every year. It isn't possible. Smartphones have pretty much peaked. People are still buying more phones than macs though so it makes sense that Apple is more concerned with phones at this point. No this isn't some feature that many adults are going to use, but kids do exist too and believe it or not the phone can be used for something fun and stupid from time to time. Not every feature needs to be some super pro plus mac pro.
