iMac haters: The display should be separate because you can keep it till it breaks

Also iMac haters: Keep the box because you’ll sell the display in a few years.

I have never heard ANYONE publicly make that first complaint.
I actually feel dumber for having read your post.

... No, the reaction you're referring to, as well as wildly misunderstanding, is Apple removing Target Display Mode, which used to allow iMac users to keep the display functionality long after the computer internals became outdated.
No that isn’t the reaction I’m referring to. Literally every article about the M1 and newer iMacs has a couple of people commenting that the display should be separate since you dab keep it much longer.
People really do see what they want to, don't they?
Yes they do

Ironically Apple device boxes are the only boxes actually worth keeping for a number of reasons. They add to the resale value of the device, they're well made, and they can be used to store other items.

A. It won’t last forever.

B. There’s always something better on the horizon in the tech world.

Displays are the least interesting thing to upgrade. I kept, and used, my last Dell monitor for 19 years. It was still working fine when I retired it, I just couldn't get my Thunderbolt dock to connect correctly with it.

As for boxes, I only keep them for my Mac and iPhone.

My boxcutter always solved the problem quite nicely no matter the size
On a related note, these little $10 ceramic blade ones are so good. I had gotten used to constantly changing out steel blades every few weeks, and now I swap one of these blades out like 2x a year. Magically makes every box “recyclable” 🤣

While we purchased these Studio Displays at work in batch, breaking down the boxes really need some physical labor. Just a few weeks ago, I saw my neighbor with the Studio Display box flattened on the recycle bin.

looking at cardbox recycle bins, I can understand Apple. Far too many people are neither willing nor able to make their stuff fit inside the bin, but just put the entire box emptiness on top of the bin, because it does not fit.

But in case of Apple, insiders know about the elevated value of the device WITH box on Ebay etc...

Exactly. This seems to be a feature based on something they themselves caused. All boxes are collapsible, just some require some extra motivation.
No, no, no, this is Apple skating to where the puck will be, not where the puck is. Apple has taken the ALL NEW Studio Display boxes to a whole new level, with a game-changing breakdown feature. Apple can't wait to see how customers are going to recycle with it. Apple thinks you're gonna love it.

We have designed the most innovative cardboard box yet - your gonna love it. Introducing cardboard packaging that breaks down like no other cardboard box. It’s our most advanced cardboard break down ever and the kind of cardboard break down you’d expect from Apple. -T Apple

If you move a lot or need to transport your monitor a display box is one of the few it actually makes a lot of sense to keep around...

I'd rather see them fixing bugs in their software than waste time designing literal trash. I guess it shows us what's really important to Apple.
