“As part of its environmental efforts”? Tim Cook is hostile to the environment in order to maximize profits, which is why literally all Macs don’t have user-upgradable memory nor user-upgradable storage anymore. Cook did that so customers’ Macs would become obsolete sooner, and thus they will have to purchase another new Mac sooner. That creates e-waste. E-waste is not “environmental efforts,” and is in fact anti-environmental efforts.

If you want to explore that possibility, fine. But to conclude that they sit around a table trying to build in "planned obsolescence", you're blinded to the truth.

There is indirect obsolescence — yes — but only as a side-effect of the "appliance-like" design approach.

Making machines that are upgradable, and then maybe only 10% of people actually take advantage of that, is far LESS environmentally friendly.

Making machines that last for a decade with minimal maintenance costs, and can then be deconstructed for parts, is a good design.

Apple has robots that disassemble iPhones to recover parts. You can drop off any old electronics — for free — at Apple stores.

Spin it any way you want, but the old thinking of user-upgradable devices is just that — old thinking.

Good to know about this. Definitely expecting the next iMac to have similar box. iMac already uses 100% recycled aluminum for the stand. Maybe the glass too will be recycled just like this Studio Display.

Apple's target audience clearly isn't people who are going to sell their monitors.

It's people who ewaste it or donate it to salvation army after a year or two.

Even though it has been said many times... This is an Apple product and a display. Rule 1: Never throw out the box. Move, sell etc. it will be your indispensable friend. I have personal experience with this rule and it has saved my digital life for years. The only thing they should do is make the box easy to break down to be flat, in order to store and reassemble later.

Then that would be cool. Right now, it makes me think the box is not going to be sturdy enough for multiple in and out's and multiple shipping.

You have no clue. Look around. The Apple second-hand market is very active, which isn't surprising for premium-priced, sought-after, quality items like Apple devices. So much so that Apple has put in place its Trade-In / Refurbished program to rein in a resale market that has become one of its main competitors.

I've kept boxes before...which greatly helped with the move. I guess the ease of breaking the box down makes it simpler but most boxes are easy enough to break down and roll/fold to fit

Apple says the boxes can be broken down into smaller pieces that fit in most recycling bins:Apple also says both of the new Studio Display models contain 80% recycled glass, which is described as an "Apple first." This feat applies to models with standard glass, not the upgraded anti-reflective, nano-texture glass.

I guess Apple would like us all to throw away our boxes/cartons immediately- in the long run it leads to more broken devices=more revenue for them with us purchasing more Apple products sooner. How shrewd.
