Because an iMac Pro would have to be, 'Maxier'?
The M1 Pro and M1 Max already look ‘Maxier’ to me, but we’ll see. If they plan to keep the price as it was, they indeed need to be maxier, if they drop the price, not so much. If they drop the “Pro” moniker along with the price, I’m cool with that ?.

Will there be any way to use the display of one of these new iMacs as an external monitor for my MacBook?

I would purchase one for sure if it could.

Unlikely, for several reasons. The first is history—Apple hasn't enabled such a thing since the iMac went Retina, suggesting that they don't think enough people would use it that way to be worth the cost of making it work. Second is a bandwidth issue—if the new iMac screen is, as rumored, a 5K mini-LED screen running at 120 Hz, the bandwidth necessary to drive that screen without compression is more than a Thunderbolt 4 connection could handle. Third is a product placement issue—solid rumors indicate that Apple will release a stand-along external monitor, so those who wanted such a thing for their MacBook would just buy that.

Lotta “could” ’s.

Like watching Ancient Aliens: “Could this mean that we have been visited by interstellar travelers?”…

For professional use the internal storage is typically where you keep your application installs. Storage for your project work will probably be on some kind of SAN, so you're going to want very fast networking.
True but you can still fill up 512 gb over years pretty quickly with items you want to keep locally. Makes little sense I think to have such a small drive on a 'pro' machine.

Like the paltry storage on the Mac Pro 'Trash Can'. (Make it necessary to use off system storage, and then limit the ports for such. Nice, not)

So now DuanRui is implying that the iMac Pro might indeed be announced next Tuesday...

For background, DuanRui takes Chinese social media Apple leaks and translates them into English. He was specifically targeted by Apple for said leaking so he appears to have access to good sources.

If we are getting the M2 MacBook Pro 13.3" and M2 Mac mini on Tuesday, if it is true an iMac will also be announced, maybe this is the M2 iMac (24") and not the iMac Pro (27")?

So, no new 27 inch iMac? Are they discontinuing it?

Yes, the Intel model was discontinued today and I do not believe we will see an Apple silicon replacement for this model. If you want something similar, pair an Apple Studio Display with a Mac mini or Mac Studio (depending on your compute needs).

I do believe we will see an Apple silicon replacement for the Intel iMac Pro next year, but it will be similarly powerful and expensive.

Absence of proof is not proof of absence? I was getting the idea that they were playing up the Studio Display as possibly the next screen for an iMac replacement. We all get Mini's, and that display. I could think of worse things to be stuck with. They have the Mini, the Mini Max, and the Mini Ultra. Seems to cover it pretty well there...

The entry level Max Studio is the same price as the 27 inch iMac has been for a long time. The problem is you need to buy the monitor separately, and Apple’s version isn’t cheap. But you might not need to buy a monitor the next time you upgrade your computer. in addition, the amount of memory on the entry level is 32 GB and not 8 or 16 like it’s been for years. Honestly the Studio seems like a decent upgrade, but needing an expensive monitor will probably kill a lot of sales.

Save your pennies folks. I'm thinking that an adequately equipped iMac Pro is going cost way more than $2K. Nowadays, 512GB storage doesn't cut it. And since it's very likely that memory is not going to be user upgradeable as it is now on the 27" iMacs, that too is going to be expensive if you want more than 16GB.
apple has left a hole in both pricing and specs that needs filling. the current AS 24" iMac maxed out is $2500 and lowest end studio + display is $3600. they've gotta fill that hole with something and an iMac "pro" or just 27" iMac of some sort with improved hardware seems most likely to me.

I find myself in agreement with Renee's opinion: if Mac Studio sells well (and most sell with an Apple Studio Display), that would indicate to Apple there was no compelling need for an iMac Pro. If it does not (or say, sells primarily as the Ultra model and in lower volumes), then this would indicate the market still wants a Pro/Max iMac Pro.

Unless a 27" iMac is considerably cheaper than a Mac Mini or Mac Studio or with a Studio Display, at this point it seems like it would be a "what for?" product. Unless the prosumer user base is really demanding an all in one, but sorta doubt it.

Or it could mean those who would otherwise prefer an iMac Pro are buying the Studio+Display simply because the former isn't available. In the absence of an iMac Pro, the assessment becomes tricky. In order to make a preference assessment for Studio+Display vs. iMac Pro, Apple needs to be able to project, based on what Studio+Display sales are now, what they would be if there were also an iMac Pro for sale.

Time will tell. Personally I think there is a market, but only Apple really knows what they’re going to do.

I think it would usually come down to price. An exeption might be an open-floor-plan design studio that wanted a super-clean look to present to clients.

On the consumer side, the base 2020 27" Intel iMac (8 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD) was $1800. Assuming that would stay the same with an AS iMac, achieving that with a Mini + Studio Display would be $650 + $1500 = $2150, so $350.

Not sure what the delta would be for an Max Studio + Studio Display vs. an equally-configured iMac Pro.
