I hope these aren't too much more expensive than a typical Mac mini. I've got a 2018 mini i5, which I think I can comfortably sell for $450. I don't need more performance than what I have, but it would be nice to reduce energy usage and heat output before the summer since my home office is in a small room and even with AC it gets warm in that room. And of course, more performance never hurts.

Bought a 8gb M1 base model to test for my business. While very quick, I noticed a few things. 1. As for ram...the vast majority (5 out of 8 gb...is used in idle. 2. And because of this, it does show the spinning beachball. I will use it until I see how this new Mini comes to be. IF Apple ever listened, whilst the 8gb M1 is great for plinking around and not doing much, to have one that is for design and other stuff (I do laser engraving...I prefer Mac over PC for this). I have seen the "stress tests" most youtubers do...nothing related to my industry. I will more than likely get the new one (transfer the current one to the house) and move the iMac to the kids.

Bottom line, I should have listened to my inner voice and got the 16gb...

NEVER MIND 'Mac mini'! I'd have a BIG MAC with upgradable parts. These machines are miniaturised and become obsolete too quick... Im still running an old 2009 Tower 4 replaceable SSDs, 64 GB RAM, 6CORE CPU which is upgradable to 12...! This would be impossible with these mac minis, same for macbooks... Thats a lot of landfill!
I've been running a 12 core 2010 5,1 for years, with two internal spinners, four SATA SSDs and a PCIe SSD. Despite the hassles of rethinking storage. making the move to the (hopefully) forthcoming Mini Pro/Max is still a no-brainer. The M1 Pro or Max more than double the 5,1 12 score Geekbench score. This is a massive step forward for folks working in audio like me.

Current plan: 1TB internal storage and re-use my SSDs as externals in USB or TB cases. Add a couple of USB external spinners for back up and call it a day. Hubs will clearly be involved, but one can least hope all will function adequately.

Hmmm. Buy this or wait for an iMac?
That is the question of the year for many of us. What arrives 1st will probably be my choice.

We wiil know when they arrive. I haven’t decided anything yet. See what they release first, what specs to what price. I have looked up where and what external monitor I should buy immediately if it will be the Mac Mini Pro, later if it will be iMac Pro.
Just to push the buy button after the buy button on Apple have been clicked too. Interesting choice though. iMac Pro or Mac Mini Pro?

First thing I pictured was the original Apple TV, when I saw this rendered image. It's somewhat amusing that Apple is replacing a decade-old design with what is essentially that of an even older product.

I've long had a similar thought myself… Mac Desktops (including the mini) with a very small lithium battery—just enough to give you say 10 minutes of power. The idea is that if there's a power outage, or someone accidentally pulls out the cord, macOS gives you a warning that you're on reserve power and should consider shutting down your Mac safely, or else restore its power. Would have saved me a few times over the years!
We have a UPS for this.

Ive always struggled knowing which Mac device to buy.... iMac, MacPro, Macbook Pro... Ive had all of these over the years... Most seemingly have a similar performance. I really appreciated being able to upgrade a machine or have one that doesn't become obsolete after 3 years also there is alway better Mac product just on the horizon! ?

That's why I like the Mini; I don't need new monitors. Just the CPU/GPU. If it performs as anticipated, I'll be good for a number of years... it may outlast my ears!

Me too
(although I'm a Hackintosh user at the moment)

Despite the iMacs being objectively good products, I simply do not like or want my monitor permanently connected to the rest of the computer hardware.

Those components should be on vastly different upgrade cycles (at least in my mind).

When I bought a new mini in 2019, I took the previous one (a quad-core from 2013) and rededicated it to being headless music server and Time Machine station, neither of which need a terminal and a keyboard. I also use it as my local git hub. I maintain it by using Screen Sharing and can ssh into it when I need to.

Unless this has a 10g ethernet port, it makes no sense to have both an ethernet port AND the magnetic charger from the iMac, given that the ethernet port is built into the iMac charger.

Is that Apple's fault or that of some third part program that doesn't release its RAM like it is supposed to when you quit it?
If an application can hold onto its RAM after you quit, that’s an operating system memory leak situation and is Apple’s fault

But that scenario doesn’t make any sense and for me the issue is I like to have a lot of applications open at once. Shocking, I know

I just can't see them speccing this thing out - unless they do a Mini Pro or something as they will want to sell the iMac Pro as the high end with the Pro/Max. I view this as the desktop version of the MacBook Air or something.

Because if they put the Pro/Max into a MacMini its going to sell like hot cakes!
With the rumors about a Mac built into a keyboard, I’d love a shakeup to the Mac lineup including a more expandable Mac mini

Depends on what the application does. I've seen programs that leave a little bit of themselves running in the background and that does not quit when you quit the main program. Kernel extension were also an issue though that went away with Big Sur.

Mac Mini with a M1 or M2 Pro CPU/GPU, 32Gb memory and 512Gb SSD (I use external SSDs for the bulk of my storage requirements) would my dream machine. If it comes in at £1300-1500 then that would be fab. Any more expensive and the Mac Studio base model kinda starts to make better sense (imo).

I hold out hope this may actually happen one day ???

My wants match your wants.
But I bought the Studio (Max). Even though it turns out they penny-pinched on the cooling apparatus (FFS Apple!), it seems to nevertheless be a fundamentally sound design.

What I'm waiting for is a 32gb RAM machine. 16 is not enough for graphic design anymore, and even the basic Mac Studio is overkill and overpriced.

A mac mini with M1 Pro was what I was expecting. Need to wait for Apple to put something in the gap between M1 mac mini and the Studio M1 Max.

Glad I got mine now , every-time apple release a brand new mac the v1 has issues , pretty sure the 'new' mini will too

Since there apparently will be no more 27" iMacs - my plan is Mac Mini and use my late 2012 iMac 27" as a display, if the new Mac Mini is reasonably specked and priced in 2022.
Still miffed that Apple chose to eliminate the 27" iMac . . .

You can't use the 2012 iMac 27" as a display with any Apple Silicon Macs.
