Based on past experience is it likely that pre-orders will be possible for new devices today? I seem to recall pre-orders opening a few days / weeks later for previous launches?

They're coordinating a major change to, probably, a quarter of their product line across a dozen localised websites in multiple timezones and countries. That's a bit more tricky than Amazon changing the price of an economy pack of incontinence pants in Germany (on a platform that is designed to support a vast catalog of products from multiple vendors).

Apple are actually pretty unusual in that their new products are typically available to order in multiple countries immediately after launch. That will come with its share of logistical problems.

They will need to configure their site to handle millions (tens of millions?) of people streaming video at the same time, which isn't typical behaviour for them. A downtime seems reasonable!

It takes them 6 hours to update the store. Sure. ;) #marketingmove

Like this post if you agree.
No, it prevents people from ordering iPhones, Apple TV's, and Apple Watches that will (might) be updated today, and keeps the unhappy/worried/confused phone calls from coming in.

"I ordered an Apple Watch Edition, and I want the new one! Can I update my order and be at the same position in line as I was for the Apple Watch Edition Series 2?"

It also clears the queue for all of the other to be announced products.

Unless the new iPhones are available today, there's no reason to close the store.

At least iPhone 7 will have a price drop and be available immediately after the event. They may accept pre orders for the new Apple Watch or Apple TV as far as we know.

Apple's online store has gone down ahead of its first-ever event at Steve Jobs Theater in Cupertino, California later today.

Apple will provide a live stream of the event on Mac, iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV starting at 10:00 a.m. Pacific Time.

At the event, Apple is widely expected to announce the "iPhone X" with an OLED display, wireless charging, and facial recognition. It is rumored the company will also unveil a new Apple TV with support for 4K video playback, and new Apple Watch Series 3 models, including some with LTE connectivity.

MacRumors will provide full coverage of the event throughout the day, with a live blog, news stories, video recap, and more. Mac users can get headlines right on their desktops by enabling Safari push notifications. We'll also be live-tweeting the event through @MacRumorsLive on Twitter.

MacRumors readers can follow along in our forums, which are a great place to discuss the announcements before, during, and after the event. Be sure to keep tabs on the iPhone, Apple TV, and Apple Watch sections in particular.

If you will be unable to watch Apple's event today, consider bookmarking our spoiler-free article, which will be updated with nothing other than a direct link to the presentation once it becomes available from Apple.

I was under the assumption, perhaps wrongly, that the store goes down when new products are launched. Do they ever launch products that ship on the day of the keynote or am I just wrong about closing the store?

But it's not the Apple website that's gone down, it's just the online store.

how about one of these:

Just picked a nice bottle design.;)

No really, it's not a bad beer, did you know The Netherlands have more beers/breweries now than Belgium!?

BTW, sometimes Belgians can be obnoxious concerning beers, just yesterday I was sitting on a terras next to a group of Belgians, he got a beer which wasn't completely clear (bit of residue), complained and got a new one, the waiter explained it was due to a new keg, it's normal, later on another one had to explain but even that guy didn't get through, he didn't get a new glas, it was normal.

Bottom line, they (Belgians) are not the know all (about beers).

How am I going to get anything done today at work?

I posted this in another thread but what the hey:

Ok, am I the only nerd that is thinking the iPhone event occurring at the new Steve Jobs Theater reminds me of Hari Seldon's first appearance at the "Vault" on Terminus. Will we get a hologram of Steve laying out the psychohistorical future of Apple? Is there a Second "Foundation" of Apple controlling our minds? Is Samsung "The Mule"?

Are these references too obscure? If so, you have missed one of the greatest Sci-Fi creations of all time. Asimov was a true genius.

...which solves the problem of not changing the product line for online orders during peak business hours across multiple time zones (without handing any country a spoiler for the announcement) how, exactly?
