Car use is the only valid argument with this whole mess. When I'm charging my phone, I'm either at work, or at home, both locations where I can either just use the speakers, use a bluetooth speaker, or use another device to listen to music (like my work computer). Luckily, I use Spotify (can't get iTunes on my work computers) so that's not a problem, personally.

Okay, so maybe you're out in public. Libraries, Starbucks, etc. If you're visiting these places for an extended period of time that would cause your battery to run out, you likely have another device with you, like a tablet or laptop to accomplish the task that brought you to the public place in the first place. Even if you're not. Even if you're reading a book and listening to music, it'd take a while for you to run out of juice.

The car problem makes sense, because besides the scenarios above, I charge in my car frequently, mostly to top it off from charging at home or work. If you don't have bluetooth, you can't make it happen without an adapter. But back when I had just a tape deck in the car and no aux connection, I needed an adapter. It wasn't the end of the world. I even used those wonky radio transmitters that pumped your music through a radio station. I needed an additional purchase to get the job done because I was using new technology.

I'm not saying this is an easy transition, but I think people are blowing this out of proportion. I can't see anyone who is charging and listening to wired music for a significant portion of their life who, with the purchase of either bluetooth headphones, a bluetooth car adapter, or one of these new Belkin adapters can solve the problem. Or the simplest solution of all. Just don't buy an iPhone 7. Get the 6S and wait for the 8.
Gee! Thanks for predicting every possible use solution and telling us what is and isn't a valid problem! You're so swell you should work for Apple... or Fox News.

You bought USB dongles? Yeah, well, that explains it. 100MB max, or, if you bought USB3 non-Apple, they might be faster, but require drivers. Of course that is less useful than well configured 802.11ac.
I do imaging of computers, I package software for distribution, move data between servers. I need 1GBit, at least. I use LAG/MLAG to achieve higher throughput and wave my fist at Apple for not providing 10GBit TB-adapters.
I might be a pretty small percentage, but have you looked up your latency over WiFi? Also, 300MBit WiFi does not mean that you have 300MBit speed within coverage, it's not even 300MBit right next to the bloody antenna!
Moving to WiFi is like going back to hubs from the early 90s. Huge collision domains, efficiency like old coax networks. All-in-all: Yuck!
Sure, for facebook, youtube and general browsing it's absolutely fine, but not for "pro" work. Also, if you need 1GBit ethernet and a second screen? SOL, if you are using a MBA, only one TB port which, for some reason is the only port that can expand your computer. Why not one TB and one DP? It's not like it's taking up too much space.
Moving to USB3 like in the MacBook will make it better, but all these adapters really make it awkward to use a Apple laptop for heavy work.

Like I say, I'm the 'creative' in our companies equation, the 300MB I speak of is the wifi speed we all get. Not for the studio, that's on each machine.

Personally I use an iMac 27" retina (which of course DOES have Ethernet) but after a recent rejig of the room I was on the wrong side for the Ethernet ports. Three months of wifi only later, I've not really noticed the difference.

My point is, even in a pretty progressive, web dependant company, loss of Ethernet 'hard ports' was sufficiently unimportant that not one member of staff took me up on offers of solutions to reinstate their wired connection.

Interesting I have cat 6 (tacked to outside of farm house)Time capsule to Airport express to COVER the house in wifi.
The farm house has two foot thick walls but the wifi is perfect throughout.
I'm certain wireless wouldn't have worked for us.

One of the biggest advantages I'm sure we can all relate with is the wires. And I'll prove it right here, right now. We've done away with ethernet for wireless internet, we've done away with optical drives and even usb storage for cloud storage, we print wirelessly now, we stream music wirelessly from the cloud, we play music wireless in our cars, we don't use DVDs and Blu Ray players because we can wirelessly stream content to our TVs, we're already in the transition of doing away with wired chargers and opting for inductive charging. Not being tethered to your phone is probably THE biggest factor and benefit of eliminating the jack. We don't have an ethernet cable hooked up to our phones to get the fastest, most best, and most reliable internet connection, now do we?
Apples and oranges.

Besides that you think most people listen to music while leaving the phone somewhere and walking around its not the same.

Btw I still hookup ethernet to my MBP and to my TV. I dont mind a dongle for ethernet(and never did), I do mind one here.

Of course not. It's more convenient to be wireless. Secondly, audio quality at this point, as mentioned above, is completely preference-based and dependent on how much you're willing to spend. If you want high quality audio, then of course you're gonna pay more. That logically goes for everything in the world. If it's of high quality you're going to spend more. And if you're on a budget, there are plenty of options already out there. Also speaking of sound, sound is depended on the amplification. Hence a more powerful amp delivers more wattage to the speakers, the cleaner the audio. Wires may have some say in it, depending on the size and ohms but largely you're not going to tell a difference. Thus headphones with built-in powered drivers are going to sound better, wireless or not, but like I said, that's all preference at that point.

There are some not that expensive very good sounding headsets out there. Not going to happen anymore with lightening, the cost of just adding that will cost about as much as something decent now.

Thirdly, utilizing that space where the DAC was before for something more beneficial like, oh, I dunno, battery life? I'm totally fine with that idea. More battery life means not needing to be tethered to a wall to charge it throughout the day. I'm sure you'd be happier with more battery life than having a dead phone with an audio jack. But I dunno, maybe you prefer that.
If they want to add any serieus battery life they can make it a few mm thicker. You wont have the camera sticking out & hours of battery life extra.

All in all, technology will advance, consumers will stop whining and probably start enjoying the new change, 5-10 years down the road people will begin to wonder "Phones had 3.5mm jacks? But why?"

And then start looking for that dongle to hook up there lightening headset to a samsung phone or have drawer full of not compatible headsets.

Yeah "progress", you do realise that the lightening port is already been on the iphone for years?

So you can either keep thinking the world is round and not wanting to accept that change IS inevitable OR you could maybe have a little faith in the tech world and find out for yourself whether no audio jack is a good thing or a bad thing. It seems right now you're just a Johnny Raincloud. People who want to find a solution to make it worth it or better don't like people like you, always being negative and paranoid and unwilling to see a brighter future or any kind of future for that matter. Companies are already rolling out phones with no headphones jacks even before Apple. So I just want to leave one last note - I, for one, have wireless headphones - the Bose Soundsport Wireless headphones. And I can testify that it was the best decision in the world. Seamless connection, no wires tethered to my phone, I don't need the phone on me always to walk around the house with headphones on, and working out with them at the gym eliminates any snagging that could happen. And most of all, they sound damn good. So at this point, it's really up to you to decide if you want to try out the new change or stick with the old.

Please stop with the "you dont like progress" why is that every time someone doesnt like anything from apple its the same "dont be a raincloud on progress" If apple changes something for good they can have all the credit. if they take quite dubious decisions like this one they can get all the criticism.

In all your text you havent once talked about the negatives points there are and merely state several times "i like it" nice for you but dont asume that means everyone should and will like it.

I have the issue daily.

With all due respect, I would hate if Apple gave us that adapter. A simple pass-through port on the current Lightning charging cable packed in the box would be all that was necessary. They're already doing it with the external battery case.

Even a "Y" splitter would be preferable to this.

My adapter (far from

still need a cable to charge, whats the big deal with having cables? Or is it more about having a proprietary connection to make more money? is wireless charging really wireless? you still need to connect the device to a power source via a cable, whether it be the phone itself or a charging pad.

yes but less cables the better.
Getting folk used to less and less cables so in a few year zero cables.

In Phil's defense, when you have millions of dollars, paying an extra $160 for Bluetooth headphones or a $50 for a dock to do something simple that used to be built in and more convenient -- those probably seem like perfectly reasonable options. Especially since if you follow his suggestions, Apple and he stand to have even more money.

it's a STUPID move. Back to the 90s and early 2000s when all phone manufacturers had their own headphones with proprietary charging connectors.

lightening is not universal, only iPhones and iPads have it. Not even macs have it.
This is unbelievable arrogant. And I say this as a typical fan boy who likes 99% of what apple makes.

and I would love to point out that companies are flocking to this "problem" quick...you'll quickly get adapters to get headphones
Who says the inconvenience is cost? You did, not me.

Lets see what else you get with Bluetooth headphones ...
  • Running out of battery, and they are useless when needed the most
  • Speaking of the battery - YET ANOTHER item you have to charge every day/multiple times a day
  • If they are like the AirPods, they are easy to lose
  • Cost many times more than wire headphones
  • loss of pairing all the time/need to reset
  • a second device grabs the signal from your bluetooth headphones - Ahh, the misses must have started up the car, and grabbed the signal from my iPhone YET AGAIN
  • Bluetooth signals bouncing off the inside of your skull
  • etc...
Bah! Don't like it!

Running out of battery? You can have an adapter champ...don't go Bluetooth.

Cost? Apple is giving you a pair of headphones, for free!!

Easy to lose? Don't get the airpods. Luckily for you, the market is flooded with options!!

Loss of pairing??? This is a joke right? I have 2 different pairs of Bluetooth headphones right now...they never have a pairing issue. Ever. I've owned countless earpieces that were Bluetooth...0 issues with losing the pairings.

Bluetooth signals bouncing off your skull? It sounds like you could use a little Bluetooth signal bounce!

What about a wire being in your way while headphones plugged in?

Sitting at a table? Make sure you grab your phone when you get up so you don't pull your phone away!

Let's wrap this cable all nice and pretty...

I'm not saying that it's not inconvienent for 1 day with them removing the headphone jack...it was more annoying when they did the lightning connector. 1 week with the lightning cable, I forgot what a dock connector even was. The fact of the matter is that all top line phones will not have a headphone jack in a year. Sorry to disappoint you.

Wow. Your travels sounds like a movie plot.

Here's what I do. Charge the phone overnight. If needs be, charge it in the car while going to the airport. Turn the phone off while standing in line to check in/go through security. Turn phone on before I get on the plane.
Why are you apologizing for Apple? There are enough instances where it is beneficial to be able to charge and use headphones at same time.

I never assumed that everyone is like me. Nor did I assume everyone will like this change. It's a transitional period. Of course people are going to be upset. History has shown this time and time again. I'm just making things aware to other people that would have, otherwise, not have known about previous tech we were afraid of losing or being replaced. (Floppy disks, optical drives, physical storage, how we view media content, etc.)

And why should I talk negative about this change? I'm glad they did it. I hate cords. I hate dealing with cords. I hate untangling them, I hate when the unexpectedly snag and rip out of my ears. I hate how they fray after minimal use There are a lot of negatives about headphones, so why would I need to state the negatives of losing the headphone jack when clearly, throughout all my text, I prefer to go wireless?

And lastly, you shouldn't assume that I'm assuming whether people will like it or not. I like it. You may not. Nothing wrong with sharing my thoughts and opinions on a forum nor yours. So let's leave it at that.

Sounds like you should quit the upgrade program. Other than that Apple has reduced redundant legacy ports on their devices for years - Bye bye serial ports, SCSI ports, even firewire ports - it happens.- anyone who didn’t see this coming wasn’t paying attention, a pretend analog (ts just digital data that has been converted which could be done anywhere) port with only two channels out and one in was ripe for removal with a full powered data bus less than an inch away.

LOL! You are stupid: there is no such thing as pretend analog.

You say "it could be done anywhere" but you are missing the point.

I don't care that much about the removal of 3.5mm jack. What I do care about is the fact that they reduced the total number of ports on the phone from two, to one.

I would have been fine with it had they gone with two Lightning ports instead of one, plus a headphone port. Because then I could still keep using my device how I do now: charge my phone in the car while plugging into the stereo; listen at work while charging; and hook up to two external devices with just a couple of cables and no infuriating intermediary dongles with tiny short cables.

I would have found it annoying still, perhaps slightly more annoying than the removal of the Cat-5 Ethernet port from the MacBook Pro. But I had to admit to myself that two Thunderbolt ports gave far more possibilities than one plus an Ethernet port. And I always have a backpack for my MBP so who cares about throwing an Ethernet to Thunderbolt adapter inside?

But with my phone, I don't want to have to remember to grab yet another kludgy dongle every time I walk out the door or go to play a gig.

Still, I'd be annoyed to have to always remember where my Lightning to 3.5mm adapter is; curse myself the times I send it through the washer and dryer; curse myself the times I leave it on the dresser and am damned to listen to the radio or worse, not be able to play a gig.

Every little thing like that adds just one more exponential factor to the Murphy's law equation of live music performance. That's why things like that are almost universally hated by musicians who do much live stuff.

You already admit that you connect your phone to external devices I don’t understand why doing that to a single hub and then to whatever other devices by a single cable isn’t better and cleaner solution than having two cables coming off the phone to wherever. Just the reduction of wear and tear on the phone port being transferred to the hub ports would seem to be worth it.

Because where does this hub go? It cannot fit in my arm case. I don't typically wear anything with pockets, and even if I did, now there's a hub with cables poking out at weird angles, and if they come unplugged in my pocket (which will happen because I am typically moving around quite a bit on stage or through dense crowds) then it will be a pain in the butt to pull out the hub, make sure it's not broken, etc.

Believe me I have lived through that enough times already. You don't think I've been dealing with crappy dongles and hubs for decades? I hate them! The solder on their little internal PCBs breaks in a few weeks of hard use; none of them are made durably or intended for mobile use.

Again, it sounds like you really really want the legacy faux analog port on the phone itself - the iPhone 6s is for you it seems. I sincerely think that you are missing the opportunities that moving the conversion to simulate analog out of the phone does for you, or having one port that can handle all your power and data needs does but its your choice.

No, you are an idiot. It is a true analog port. There is no such thing as "faux analog" ... what a moron!

Analog means it's not a digital signal. It means you can plug directly into an analog input and hear your intended sound with no further conversion necessary. Period.

I am upset due to Apple reducig the number of total output ports by 50% in a vain and disgusting profit grab due to their executive team having completely failed to innovate in the last few years. It's really sad because innovating would not even be that hard with their level of resources; but instead they are resorting to screwing us customers and shills like you are lapping up Schiller's garbage. It's a shame!

And yes I guess I will have to stick with the 6S, you are correct. But don't expect me to be happy about that and don't expect me not to strongly express this to Apple via every chance I get, because this really ticks me off (which is hard to do as I am a Mac user since 1984 and I generally support Apple).

[doublepost=1473470952][/doublepost]

Hey if it works for you, then great.

But if, like me, you use your iPhone as a musical instrument, and often connect it to multiple external devices including sound systems and portable amplifiers, for live performance with the many amazing iOS musical apps including Garage Band, then you would likely already know wireless audio has significant latency and compression, and is therefore useless for this use case—a use case that heretofore Apple has been the exclusive provider of solutions for. (I mean, neither Android and Windows phones come close in terms of apps or accessories.)

So to see Apple dump its musicians like this is disgusting. It really makes me physically sick.

How do you get around the insane latency issue of BlueTooth or (I am sure) Apple's W1 thing?

How do you feel about never being able to play uncompressed audio?

Of course someone like you probably doesn't even know what uncompressed audio sounds like...

And your life sounds simple and uncomplicated. Must be nice. Out here in the real world it's not always like that. Good luck to you. Maybe take look around the airport sometime and watch all the people on the phone as they go through security, and sitting at the charging stations trying tap off before they get on their planes where they may or may not have an in-seat power supply.
Your travel schedule sounds like mine. I found this power bank at Walmart for $20 (not that I'd ever shop there normally ;)):

LiPo cells, two USB outputs, 12,000 mAh (charges my iPhone 6 about 4 times) and it has wall prongs so you just plug it in somewhere in the office for the day.

Pretty light and compact. Don't even notice it's in my backpack.

I understand the convenience, but aren't a phone's output capabilities/limitations going to bottleneck much of the increased quality from high-end headphones?

Name another wearable device besides an iPhone that fits in a pocket or on an arm and runs analog synthesizer emulators like Moog Model 15, and allows for mobile music playing with no external power supply, no stands, no desks, no chairs, no benches?

Not everyone is using headphones. I hook up to a Roland Mobile Cube amp that I wear on my belt for mobile music performances (I synthbomb bluegrass circles at festivals, among other things). I use a wearable keyboard that works over USB/MIDI via Lightning.

I absolutey need a 100% analog, latency-free sound system. If it was possible via wireless, I would love that... but Apple did not say the latency of W1. They did not announce a W1 to 3.5mm female adapter with a chargeable battery, nope. I was dreaming of it but then they FAILED.

So now I am orphaned on 6S Plus forever?

Or does Apple just expect me to add at least four more connectors to my setup... one 3-foot Lightning male to female extender, then a hub to split Lightning to two Lightnings; then one to go Lightning to 3.5mm; and finally my existing Lightning to USB?

I need the male-to-female extender so I can put the hub somewhere like a pocket or fanny pack (boy won't that make me look cool) on my body so it's not just hanging off my arm where one of the medusa of cables going into it would, 100% for sure, come unplugged at the exact wrong time during a performance.

Of course Apple doesn't make male-to-female Lightning cables, and so if it's anything like it was with the 30-pin one I bought back in the 4S days, then when iOS 10.1.3 comes out, my phone will start saying "accessory unsupported" randomly during a show one day and reject some or all of my various dongles and extender cables because I made the sin of getting one with a fraudulent Made for iPhone logo on it.

See I have already been through it with this BS. I have had my Line6 MobileKeys' proprietary cable vanish before a show. I have had my iRig MIDI's lame plastic dongle thing come unplugged and have its dumb little ports have their solder crack inside and stop working intermittently.

I bought a G-Boom to test mobile BlueTooth audio but its latency is terrible and unusable.

I bought a Korg MicroKey Air to try BlueTooth MIDI and its latency is barely usable, nowhere near wired MIDI. Its keys are tiny. It is really just a toy.

Don't fool yourselves; removing the headphone port is purely about one thing: $$$. Having to endure idiots who know less than nothing lecture me here about "fake analog" and have Apple act like it's doing us a favor with this, is the most intellectually insulting and infuriating thing that I've ever experienced as an Apple customer.

I cannot believe someone got fired over Maps, and yet they are now pulling this crap. What a fiasco.
[doublepost=1473473951][/doublepost]
But it would have made so much more sense to include a wireless dongle that goes on the end of traditional headphones, and include the 3.5mm EarPods in the box for maximum compatibility.

apple-puck-concept.jpg

Amen. This is what I actually requested in a letter to Apple awhile back.

I said, "Nintendo's Wii U has a wireless controller with a video screen where the latency of the video on that screen actually has less latency than video over HDMI. Why can't you guys do that with audio so we musicians don't need cables anymore?"

But instead they took away the headphone port and did NOT give us another option to reduce cable use. Instead now we need MORE cables and MORE adapters to still get latency free audio.

I bet you anything Apple's engineers totally did make a dongle like that, maybe even a latency free one, and then it got killed because it would not sell for as much as headphones, and everyone would just buy that instead of buying new Beats headphones or AirPods.

I'm telling you, this is just a profit grab and nothing more. It's not about the future. All speakers ever made are analog because sound itself is analog. Impulses traveling through wireless will always be laggier than through a wire due to the receiver device needing to process the signal. It will always have compression because they are too lame to make it uncompressed like it would be over an analog cable.

And yes I do know that the DAC in an iPhone is far inferior, but for mobile musicians how liberating it is by far makes up for any small loss in quality. I have recorded in a studio directly off my iPhone's headphone jack into a Neve board and it sounded wonderful enough to get onto a major album. I would get laughed out of a studio doing that over BlueTooth or whatever.

Thanks, I do travel with several battery packs. Unfortunately, using one doesn't address the problem this thread does, nor what the OP I was responding to raised -- you still can't use this AND listen to audio at the same time.

Again, the point is: one can never be sure they will have a fully charged phone when taking a trip, and even if they do, there's no guarantee that it will make it through the flight without needing to be recharged. And whether you plug into a charging bar at the airport, an external battery pack, or in-seat power, the end result is that the phone cannot be charged and continue listening to music without a kludgy $40-60 dock/adapter.
