Affordability is "absolutely something we care about," Schiller says. "But we don't design for price, we design for the experience and the quality people expect from Mac. Sometimes that means we end up at the higher end of the range, but not on purpose, just because that's what it costs."

Well...with Tim Cook stating they really care about Macs, I guess this just confirms they're all full of ****.

I just realized they come with Skylake processors o_O I assumed it'd come with Kaby Lake since many Windows machines have been shipping with them.

I had the live stream on the whole time on my iPad. Must've been a bird that flew by at the exact moment Mr. Schiller talked about the processor.

Ferrari designs for the experience too.
Rolls Royce, Porche... etc. Clearly Apple is not marketing its latest laptop to the Toyota Yaris or Honda Fit crowd.

When I drop into a LR it is a whole different experience than a Rav-4. I don't expect a dressed up CRV at LR prices and someone tell me it's about the experience. ;)

'Care about affordability my ...'

I actually think the touch bar is nice. Touch ID is nice. A choice of silver or space grey is nice. But the obsession with thinness to the cost of functionality aspects, the prices, the need for adapters for so many things now, the lack of internal upgrading/expandability... taken all together it's all reaching shark-jumping proportions, if it hasn't already for many people.

Id love to know what was their idea behind putting the price of the old ones up, its certainly nothing to do with design or progress because they had already been designed and on sale for less only hours ago!

Yes, design with only four USB-C ports because it offers such a great experience. Price it at $1800 because it's such a magical price. No... we aren't doing this for money. If we were we'd be one of the biggest corporations in the world!

He didn't say they aren't doing this for money. He said they don't design their products with the price in mind and try to make an inexpensive machine. He said they design to make the best experience and that's why they are expensive.

The reality is these prices are in line with late-'08 MBP prices. When I built my '08 machine, it was a loaded BTO machine and it was 3 grand.

Aside from the huge SSD options now, which there was nothing comparable in 2008, the loaded 512 machine is right around $3k, so pretty on par with 8 years ago.

So everyone bitching must be fairly new to Macs, because they've been comparatively quite cheap for several years now.

It's more clear now than ever just how much Steve Jobs drove Apple. They got by for a few years ok until it was time to start adopting newer technologies, and now it's just a complete mess.

They now go back to charging insane prices for **** that doesn't work with anything else but theirs, and now doesn't even work well with other things within their own ecosystem
