I remember the excitement Steve tried to gather on stage when he introduced Ping. Demos with Lady GaGa and that Coldplay performance.

This all reminds me of Apple's similar network from 2000, iReview, where people connected and reviewed... websites. Yeah, it didn't last for long.

Although it is funny how many people think only apple can produce something great, as if they own "awesomeness"

I don't know about own, but... I heard Apple was in a patent battle with Google over it after the courts stripped MS of any chance at it back in the 90's.... ;)

I must work on my sarcastic tone... I think it got lost in the typing...

It's not sarcasm or satire if one lacks any reason to perceive it as such.

To you it was obvious, to me you're just another slightly odd fanboy. Put it another way, if I'd posted what you posted, could you be sure I was joking?

It will die eventually when something good enough comes along. It's not time yet unfortunatly.

Whatever replaces it will be more annoying.

1) because you'll be older, and thus more easily annoyed.
2) cos that seems to be a general law of communication technology.

This is probably one of those areas where the relative age of Apple's main decision makers becomes apparent.

I'm sorry, I seem to have rubbed you up the wrong way. I wasn't criticising you for not picking up my sarcasm, I was actually being serious that I must make myself self clearer. Apologies for any confusion.

I'm not a fanboy, at least I don't think so. I do own a lot of apple stuff all the same.

Ping never had a chance against Facebook and twitter! Being stuck on a desktop made it such a limited system. And with it so closely integrated with your apple ID and iTunes, it was a pain to set up.

Ping was a great idea and had potential, but losing facebook integration killed it. It was pretty much impossible to find friends and no one bothered to touch it. Then came Spotify.

Ping joins Mobile Me and it will not be missed.

The updated media application will show albums in a grid interface with song listings unfolding below the album cover art when clicked.

Like cover flow and any other viewing options that I'll never use other than the basic list, is this a "feature" that can be turned off and ignored? Or will I have to treat this iTunes like iOS 6 and not upgrade to it for a lengthy period of time until they correct dumb decisions?

No, I got your point. My point was simply that satire only works when there is a way of spotting it. Your original post was misunderstood by a bunch of people here simply because it is the kind of comment you'll often see around here, and would be just as likely to be made in earnest.

Sorry if I came off like I was annoyed, that wasn't my intent.

I thought it was stupid at launch and still think it's stupid. Glad I never joined. Otherwise, I'd feel like I did when Apple put the kibosh on MobileMe.

I can easily imagine an alternate universe where neither of those services existed and Ping still came and went without anyone really noticing. At the end of the day it failed to answer a very simple question: "why on Earth would I give a ....?"

It's not easy to know which things will fly and which will bomb, so I'm not going to poke fun at Apple here. Right now Passbook looks to be another non-entity in the making, but who knows? News stand wasn't given much of a chance when it first arrived, but it's clearly gearing up to be a success for Apple now.
