Like cover flow and any other viewing options that I'll never use other than the basic list, is this a "feature" that can be turned off and ignored? Or will I have to treat this iTunes like iOS 6 and not upgrade to it for a lengthy period of time until they correct dumb decisions?
iOS 6 nothing, iOS 5 made the Music app on the iPad into something far less than its predecessor. Bringing that to the desktop is just one more reason to wish someone would stamp on Scott Forstall a few times.

I can easily imagine an alternate universe where neither of those services existed and Ping still came and went without anyone really noticing. At the end of the day it failed to answer a very simple question: "why on Earth would I give a ....?"
It's not easy to know which things will fly and which will bomb, so I'm not going to poke fun at Apple here. Right now Passbook looks to be another non-entity in the making, but who knows? News stand wasn't given much of a chance when it first arrived, but it's clearly gearing up to be a success for Apple now.
(self quoting, D'oh!)
Thinking on it, Ping seemed to be a case of Apple losing sight of something important. A lot of companies get the "but is it cool" syndrome. Apple has generally avoided that disease. If you set out to make something good, young people will tend to regard it as cool. If you set out to make something cool, well, not so much. For years MS have been failing here, but the UI formerly known as Metro suggests that may be getting the hint. Ping was a rare case where Apple forgot.
