In the UK, there are a lot of people with Android phones (and not just Samsung). Among the 40-50 people I interact with regularly, about half have Android phones. As mentioned, everybody in the UK seems to use WhatsApp - probably because of the OS split. The only people I use iMessage with are my Mum (who uses an iPad 90% of the time so no routine access to WhatsApp) and my wife (we have a long iMessage history so we've never bothered to move over to WhatsApp). Every other person or group I interact with is via WhatsApp.

For some reason some people become adults and suddenly forget about what things were like socially in their teens. I remember when kids would comment on each others backpack brand or if your notebook was a real trapper keeper
You mean the trapper keeper was a real thing?

Being from the UK, I always thought it was a made up deal for South Park 🤣

Why do people in the US not use WhatsApp, like everyone in Europe does ( it is more secure, has more features, is easier to use, and works across all platforms)? Or Snapchat if you are a child? So odd.
I think it comes down to habits. The US had unlimited text way before Europe (as an example) so people were used to simply using the standard texting app while people abroad (myself included) were looking for a free alternative to text, just as WhatsApp provided instead of paying 19 cent per text message. By the time Apple released iMessage, which did not require to install a separate app, people in other markets were already used to WhatsApp by that time

I've said this for years...

Apple developing the iPod touch was a stroke of brilliance. Most of these Gen Zers grew up with an iPod touch as their first "screen", and it immediately sucked them into the Apple ecosystem. Once you are there and you have familiarity with it, you would need a significant reason to change ecosystems. And that change ain't happening.

Because everyone uses builtin iMessage and thus there is no compelling reason to switch to an app that nobody uses. You'd wind up with some chats in one app and some in another, which would be confusing. As long as iMessage meets their needs, people won't switch.

No dilemma - in the end Apple is a for profit company and makes decisions based on maximum profit and margin.

While I don't disagree with you, I also feel Apple has some sort of social responsibility. Personally my belief is that a large chunk of what is wrong in the world today is exactly this corporate direction where the ONLY factor to be considered is the fiduciary duty to your shareholders for "maximum profit and margin." No Apple is not the only one to blame here; carriers being greedy and not pushing their RCS implementation, Google being greedy and pushing their own proprietary RCS solution, etc sure deserve part of the blame.

Funny, I'm Gen X and what I ended up dumping was Samsung and Google for doing Samsung and Google things.

Amen brother. I was hardcore Android for 10 years. Then one day I went to make a payment with Samsung Pay, and I was presented with an ad for a financial service. I had to stop the middle of my transaction, read the terms and conditions of the ad that popped up, and make sure that I didnt sign up for some financial service that I had no interest in. That was a hard STOP for me in the Samsung world. Completely unacceptable.

all these android users exposing themselves on macrumors 🤣🤣
just realize that no one young wants to talk to a green bubble. it's really not that hard.
don't cry to apple for not supporting RCS messaging when google had YEARS to come up with an imessage competitor and they all FLOPPED.

I also don’t trust Meta with my data, whether it’s encrypted or not.

You’re more than free to disagree with me but the reality is that phones aren’t just an extension of our lives anymore - they *are* our lives, it’s our primary means of interacting with the world and other people. This is going to be a very big deal to young, social people who do that more than anything else. None of this probably matters at all to older people who never relied on their phones much to begin with.
If your phone is your life, are you truly living?

Look at some of the other comments, I'm really surprised adults can be so juvenile implying Android sucks and if you own one you are ruining everyone else's experience with a green bubble instead of calling for a solution other than buying an iPhone.
It's disgusting, it really is.

My favorite is when an iOS user calls someone using a Galaxy "poor" even if they are using a $1,200 Ultra.
I was thinking the same thing. Comments like the one you've responded to are very troubling on so many levels.
The sad thing is these people are real. What a shallow way to go through life. Their social status is based off of what phone they choose to use?

His outlook is really REALLY sad. I don't disagree that peer pressure is intense for kids (apparently it's pretty intense for adults also lol), but I really try to teach my kids differently and to stand up for themselves and their point of view. I can draw a decent analogy in that my kids bring healthy food to school, fruits and non processed food. My 10 year old tells me she gets picked on all the time, but she stands up for herself and has become a leader, influencing her friends to also ask for healthy food. Very proud of her.

Yep, all these "poor" iPhone users could never afford a real phone like the Galaxy Fold! /sarcasm /sarcasm /sarcasm !!!

Yeah, this is one of the problems with Google as a company.

They fail to keep up a consistent brand.

Google can't just come up with a product and continue to maintain and improve it incrementally. They have to tear everything down every few years and start from scratch with a new name and completely different interface. PEOPLE DO NOT LIKE THIS.

Look at iMessage. It's still called iMessage, and has had incremental improvements since it came out. No rename, no big makeovers.

Same deal with the various iCloud services.

There's one exception, "Music", which I think was a huge mistake; everyone knew what iTunes was and it was a beloved brand, I think it would have made more sense to rename Music on the iPhone to iTunes, rather than rename iTunes on the desktop to Music. BUT STILL, it was only a name change, the underlying service stayed exactly the same and you didn't have to uproot everything to migrate.

Google needs to knock it off and maintain consistent services and start building the trust they lost by behaving the way they have. Nobody likes to have their world shuffled around every few years.

I mean, it’s really not that hard.
If someone has an iPhone, there’s probably at least an 80% chance they have tiktok, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, or one of the other hundreds of social media applications with a DM feature installed on it
"Hard" is a relative term. If someone has an iPhone, there's a 100% chance they have iMessage. So communicating with them doesn't require one to first ask "Do you have XYZ app we can DM over?" The inconvenience multiplies when trying to setup a group chat. Doing so with all iPhone users is as easy as communicating with just one. Finding out which DM app everyone has in common just to have a quick group chat is just annoying.

Right!? I use a $2000 Z Fold 4 as my primary, which costs more than any iPhone 😂 The difference here is, I don't care if a person uses a $100 phone or a $2000 phone. I treat everyone the same regardless.

Wasn't there a time where iOS allowed clearing of app data without deleting the app? iOS is close to perfect for me but I also use android...

Both iOS and android are from US companies yet the user base is not close to 50% each...

What I hate about entry level/budget android phones are putting multiple cameras yet only 1 is usable... They don't have to use 32MP or higher for the main camera then 5MP or 2MP macro/depth... They should follow the flagship of previous years, for example S10 and S10+, they are nearly of the same number of pixels, 12MP and 16MP... If they are going to use 5MP for one then use it for all, or 12MP for all...

Yeah you're absolutely right, Google deserves their fair share of the blame. I would ascribe even more blame to US carriers (and most likely worldwide carriers as well) for not pushing true RCS, as that would have taken this completely off of Apple if they had no choice. Instead the carriers, from what I understand partly out of greed from SMS income, sat on RCS for years and years before completely abandoning it. Google's RCS btw is not the same and is highly proprietary and I can't blame Apple for not accepting it. But the decision to open up iMessage is Apple's, I'll bet they could even derive significant income from it by charging a subscription for non -Apple users. Of course this would take away their walled garden advantage.

Yes, sorry but the kids don’t want to go outside and play with sticks and rocks anymore. They want to interact with with their friends, they want to be able to send a picture without it being a pixelated mess when it shows up on the other end, or IF it ever shows up on the other end. They want to play games with eachother, they want to be able to send emojis that don’t show up as random squares that the other person can’t see, they want to be able to write a long message that doesn’t get broken up into 7 parts which are then all received out of order… all various things that have plagued iOS and Android interaction at one point or another.

Maybe this wasn’t the world we grew up in, but it’s the world they’re growing up in now.
