Define „rules“. First of all the iPhone market share in Germany has steadily climbed (see graph), and most importantly most of those Androids sold are low-/mid-end devices. The iPhone market share where it matters, i.e. in the high-end devices where all the profit is made, must be way over 50% in Germany as well.

LOL
“Rules” means, as my previous post said, that Android has the largest market share (of 67%). I don’t know what’s difficult to understand here.

What‘s difficult to understand, at least for you, apparently, is that there are other metrics that could be used to define which platform „rules“ other than market share. And even in your chosen metric iPhone is climbing steadily.

Why do people in the US not use WhatsApp, like everyone in Europe does ( it is more secure, has more features, is easier to use, and works across all platforms)? Or Snapchat if you are a child? So odd.

And what's does "blue bubble" mean? All messages I receive from other iPhone users are grey, same as messages from Android. Its only messages I send to Android that are green, but why would that bother anyone?
Probably because WhatsApp is owned by Facebook.

It is really arguable whether WhatsApp - an app owned by Facebook, a company whose entire business model relies on exploiting its users' personal information - can be "more secure". Never mind the parent company - even from a technical perspective, I don't buy your 'more secure' argument. "easier to use" is an absurd statement when compared to iMessage. I use both (only because my relatives are all in Germany) and I hate the opaque organizational structure of WhatsApp's GUI. "More features" is subjective. WhatsApp (on iOS) isn't nearly as integrated with the rest of iOS as iMessage is - all those integrations are "features" too. One might argue, those are the features Apple ecosystem users value most.

I mean, it’s really not that hard.
If someone has an iPhone, there’s probably at least an 80% chance they have tiktok, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, or one of the other hundreds of social media applications with a DM feature installed on it
So texting from an Iphone to an android phone doesn't work?
Heh maybe my friends aren't ghosting me :)

I've never had any problem communicating with Android users...not sure what would be so challenging about the reverse.

So you can send full size/resolution pictures? You can start group chats? You can facetime? You can tapback?

A few years ago I ventured in to the world Android for a little bit because I was curious and because I'm not really loyal to any brand... I kind of just get what I like and what works best for me.... At the time I didn't admit this to anyone because I kind of felt silly about it but I came running back to iOS because of one thing and one thing only... iMessage..... And I felt so stupid and silly, but I felt like I ruined so many group chats that I was in, and I was having all kinds of issues sending videos and pictures to my wife and friends... It was a little bit of a disaster.... and even though I felt a little silly switching back for just one feature I did it and my experience has been much smoother ever since.

I'm not an apple fanboy by any means and I think Android manufacturers make amazing devices especially Samsung and the pixel. But man did Apple hit it out of the park with iMessage...

in 12' I briefly worked for AT&T and they had a Moto Atrix for .99 and iPhone 4 for $99. The mother told her daughter you can have this phone for .99 and the daughter had tears rolling down her cheek as she wanted the iPhone 4. The mother said she was pathetic and asked her why she needed the Apple phone...I knew. She didn't want to be mocked. But it truly is sad how people are treated for not being trendy.

Using an Android phone as a member of Gen Z is kind of like wearing cowboy boots everywhere when everyone else wears sneakers: sure, there's nothing actually wrong with it, and you could even claim it's more practical, and really it's bad if people bully you for your choices...

...but, man, you'd sure look like an unfashionable weirdo. :apple:

Metrics that you, by your own admittance, just made up and can’t prove. It must be because it has to be, got it.

"According to the report, younger consumers are concerned about being socially ostracized for not having an iPhone". What a sad, sad world we live in.

Honestly, this has always been the case with teens.
Before it was having certain types of shoes, bike, jeans....

The difference is that sneakers back then where $50, and now we are talking about a $1000 piece of tech that makes you not exercise and lose touch with the world around you.

Teens have always been the same. It's just that now they have access to things before never existed. And society is not doing enough to prevent them from over using these new technologies. On the contrary, everything is made so they use them more and more.

Oh I don't disagree with you, although Apples services have been growing just as much as their hardware sales last I checked. They could EASILY charge $5-10/month for non-Apple users to use iMessage. On the surface it's a loss because without their walled garden they might lose a lot of potential hardware sales. But at the same time this hasn't stopped them from opening up Apple TV, Music, and other services which are available on non-Apple hardware. Heck think of how many potential users between Windows and Android they might have with iMessage. They could even keep Apple hardware iMessage as a better option by giving it all the bells and whistles, personally I would be happy just with being able to send full size/resolution pictures and videos and group chat function. Let Apple hardware owners keep facetime, tapbacks, etc.

The analogies to Apple TV and Apple Music are flawed precisely for the reason you gave yourself - those services provide profits *without* taking away profits from hardware sales. Why would Apple gamble on a paid 'iMessage' service? That subscription would have to make up for lost current & *future* hardware sales - since, as the article points out, every iPhone sale is accompanied with additional Apple hardware and services sales. The equation against such a subscription becomes even more lopsided when you consider that iMessage staying an Apple platform exclusive actually increases sales.

Pray tell, when did gen x drop windows?
DeGeneration X'er here. I dropped Windows when Vista came out. Got back on with Win7. Drop Windows again when 8 and 8.1 came along. Back on the Windoze wagon at 10.

I'd love to drop Windows completely, except I cannot live without Excel. Well, there is Excel on MacOS.🤣🤣🤣 Yeah, tell a contractor to use only Harbor Freight tools.😏

Yet here you are, clearly bullying people for their choices.

It is strange seeing how geographical these things are. I'm English but live in the US. Near my entire family in the UK own iPhones, but use WhatsApp instead of Messages (except my mum). In the US, my friend group is a healthy mix of iPhone and Android, but I don't know anyone who actively uses WhatsApp - SMS is the common thread.

I totally agree Apple's strategy is paying off. It's interesting but in my household things have played out a bit differently. I'm an Android user, my wife has an iPhone, both my kids have iPads. I purchased my 10 year old's first laptop this weekend and gave her a choice of macOS or Windows, she didn't hesitate in choosing Windows even after I showed her how her iPad could nicely integrate into her macbook. I think she has seen me operate both Windows and macOS enough where she felt Windows was a better option. It will be interesting to see where her taste goes going into the future.
Well a 10 year old may like the touchscreen? but who knows maybe her friends have windows.
also not everyone sees the advantage of the mac integration, something you have to use
to really appreciate.

A single pair of sneakers might have cost $50-$100 but things like shoes and clothing get replaced way more than phones. Most also don’t just own one pair of shoes

Interesting social dilemma for Apple, figure out how to make iMessage universal or focus on profits. I try to teach my kids to not blindly follow, but even I will admit it's pretty damn hard when you can't communicate well with an iPhone user when you have an Android phone.
profits are apple's only motivation.

It works, just poorly for media. Which is sort of "intentional" if you think about it. Get a video from an Android user and it'll probably be a low frame rate block-fest due to least common denominator fallback MMS. Get one from an iPhone.. smooth as silk.

Yeah, this is one of the problems with Google as a company.
They fail to keep up a consistent brand.

Google can't just come up with a product and continue to maintain and improve it incrementally. They have to tear everything down every few years and start from scratch with a new name and completely different interface. PEOPLE DO NOT LIKE THIS.

Look at iMessage. It's still called iMessage, and has had incremental improvements since it came out. No rename, no big makeovers.

Same deal with the various iCloud services.

There's one exception, "Music", which I think was a huge mistake; everyone knew what iTunes was and it was a beloved brand, I think it would have made more sense to rename Music on the iPhone to iTunes, rather than rename iTunes on the desktop to Music. BUT STILL, it was only a name change, the underlying service stayed exactly the same and you didn't have to uproot everything to migrate.

Google needs to knock it off and maintain consistent services and start building the trust they lost by behaving the way they have. Nobody likes to have their world shuffled around every few years.
This is true… anyone remember Google Play Music? How about Google Hangouts ? Both were great products that were inevitably killed off for the “next new thing”, YT Music( which doesn’t even come close) and Google Chat/Meet, which even more confusingly is 2 products to replace one! If consistency is key, then Apple wins.
