LOL @ people discounting Apple's entire effort at advertising based on one macrumors garbage article, which was based on a guess.

L.O.L.

dear apple!

please note:

- ripping off people with overpriced hardware: works.
- ripping off people with overpriced songs: works.
- ripping off people with overpriced videos: does NOT work.
- ripping off appstore developers by demanding a huge share of the app price: works.

Huh.. I thought all of the current major app stores took 30% of your sales revenue (Apple, Google, Microsoft), and when Apple introduced it, it was one of the more developer-friendly percentages in the industry. Just curious if you think the majority of the mobile application store industry is ripping off developers.

This isn’t about mobile market share, it’s about mobile advertising market share.

Apple’s gotten into advertising, but Google IS an advertising company.

You could also look at OS sales revenue of Apple vs. Google (zero). But Apple’s an OS company. Google isn’t.

This is just about one facet of what Apple does. Not about the reasons why Verizon customers choose an Android phone over an iPhone ;)

Well put.

Ask that Angry Birds developers if they think they are getting ripped off after making 10million + in a market that did not exist 4 years ago.

sure...

Anyone here actually try to develop for Android?

Where the hell is my IDE?

yeah that's what I thought...

But yet, when Macrumours publish a positive Analyst-Apple-Report many people here are ready to lick it up... and take the report as being accurate.

Apple are finding iAds very tough sell, due to being expensive and having a lot of control over the content. Advertisers are used to more freedom.

So? Android was designed to be deployed on many devices, from level entry up to High spec'd devices. This shows the success of Android.. If the consumer didn't want Android they wouldn't buy it, period.

Most logical comment yet, well put.

Who's fault is that but Apple's?

And, the logic behind that is faulty. Having two models of phones doesn't double your market share. Having four models doesn't quadruple it. Having phones that meet different needs is what increases market share. The "one size fits all" pushes some people over to Android phones that meet their needs better.

And, of course, Apple sells two models of Iphone - not one.

Of course it helps their market share. And the buy one get one free crap helps too. Buy one iPhone wannabe phone, give one to someone who would normally not buy an iPhone wannabe to begin with and you're doubling your market share.

Best Advertising Is To Make Great Products

It takes a LOT of advertising to sell crap

It takes almost no advertising to sell desireable items

ah, wasn't apple the FIRST who introduced an app store?

it would be ok if app developers could decide if they want to sell their app via their website or via the app store and then give apple 30%. the sour thing is, that it is the ONLY way to sell the app! it is like in a dictatorship, where only one person or company creates an artificial monopoly, simply to get as much revenue as possible!

it is as if you could only fill up your car at your car companies brads gas stations. no one would accept that if that was happening... such a car would not sell!

Is that why I've been bombarded with iPad and iPhone commercials lately? Sometimes twice in the same commercial slot.

Nope. Steam was one of the first success digital distribution channels, one could also argue XBL, WiiWare, PSN were app stores before Apple's App Store.

Not to mention the various software repositories for a lot of the *nixs (hell, Cydia, the alternate/JB app store is based on Debian's Apt).

A lot of phones btw had ways of buying software online before the app store too, just tended to be kludgy and of course didn't carry over to your next phone.

But yeah, Steam is the closest to the App Store, and definitely predates it.

Dont forget Cydia and Installer were around before the AppStore was even announced. Back when Steve said it was a stupid idea.

ah, wasn't apple the FIRST who introduced an app store?

Apple was the first phone manufacturer to be so brazen and greedy as to not only include their own app store on the device, but to restrict everyone to using only it, plus collect sales royalties.

However, there were handheld app stores for at least a decade before Apple came along... including some that came on the device.

Just think about all the wallpapers, ringtones and apps that carriers like Verizon sell for dumbphones, for instance. (They rarely give out figures, but they sold a ton of BREW apps.)

And some overseas carriers used to install Handango's store app. (Handango is/was probably the top store for Palm, WinMo, Blackberry, etc apps.)

Apple did this to themselves.

Apple could be dominating this market IF it didn't lock up individual carriers in massive markets - as AT&T in the USA.

Apple has the best product here. People enjoy the iPhone the most. The apps are best. The phone is just as affordable as a $199 Droid or Galaxy or Palm. The bottom line is Apple is not just tied to a single carrier, it's tied to the WRONG carrier. AT&T SUCKS! Verizon dominates. Apple cut its long-term capabilities for market domination when it signed the absolutely horrific exclusivity agreement with AT&T.

If Apple would have taken the approach of one iPhone with an expandable card slot (to allow people to "upgrade") and upgraded it with better RAM, CPU, Storage options every four to six months (instead of annually), there is no reason it couldn't own over 50% of the market.

People need more access to the iPhone. The iPhone needs to be permitted on both GSM and CDMA networks. It needs to be open for anyone anywhere on any network. Offer it with every carrier, and offer it contract free for full price.

This is a culmination of business errors that simply have destroyed and handed the lead and market domination positions to Google's OS and other carriers. In addition, Google Android probably wouldn't be a serious competitor IF Apple did have the iPhone available with all carriers on all networks from day one. It would be an iOS vs. BlackBerry sort of domination world in smartphones.

Apple had the superior OS with the Mac against Windows, and it has a superior OS with the iPhone over Android... it just comes down to horrific business decisions. Sure, AAPL is worth a fortune, but it's the opportunities missed that will leave us all wondering what could have been. In addition, Apple has lost its vision with OS X lately... disappointing but it all comes down to one man micromanaging and not spending the money to properly develop for market domination.

i am not going to disagree with what you wrote, but you might want to actually read the article because it is about mobile advertising market share and not mobile OS market share.

the general theme is the same though. apple's iron grip on the iads process has surely prevented its market share from being much higher.

Percent is percent. It doesn't matter how big the market is. If they had predicted Apple would have 21% of the market and they only have 8% that is underperforming no matter how you spin it. Basically other companies were able to take advantage of the growing market and Apple was not.

I agree. I left windows two months ago and am ready to go back. The OS in all honesty is not "much" better than Windows 7. The machines are built better and look better but not at the price they charge. I think there is a reason the majority buy windows or (non-apple) products. Sure its money number one. And yes you get what you pay for. The hardware is better but the software is up for debate and more personal. For the same reason you dont see as many Ferrari as Honda. But apple is always going to be less unless they put out a few more phones a year and to all the carriers. Why not? Go for it.

Iphone will continually dwindle as time goes on. Now that other phone makers are catching on and learning how to have smoother touch, and better os they will loose marketshare and popularity. Now its trendy but the utilitarianism will win the day. And as androids get better and better, and more and more affordable, apple will loose again just like it did in the 80s, but will still remain popular with the elite and wealthy minority. But I admire the ferrari, but I am a honda guy. I think the majority of folk are and the numbers bear that out. Are we honda and focus drivers settling for yes, maybe. But not everyone can afford an italian sportscar.

Actually, the statement about Apple computers built better than PCs is debatable. Obviously $1.5K iMac is built better than some $500 PC machine. But when it comes to computers at the same price the story is totally different. Apple avoids competing on price by offering only niche models (MacPro, Mini and All-in-ones) which makes it difficult to compare them to PCs. Situation is different for laptops though. But believe me, Dell Precision M6500 Covet (starting price $4K) is a much better piece of electronics and machinery than any MBP.

Better in what sense? You are comparing a Mobile Desktop Workstation with a MBP? The nice thing about the MBP is, that it is a refined product. Relatively powerful and yet, portable with a good battery life. Faster, bigger, etc, doesn't necessarily translate into better.

Weight & Dimensions:

Preliminary weight starting at: 8.5lbs/3.86kg with WXGA+ panel, DVD-ROM, 9-cell battery.
Width: 15.4"/393mm
Depth: 11.0"/280.5mm
Height: 1.35"/34.5mm(F), 1.5"/38.5mm(B)

Good luck with that

I hope it is better than the Top of the Line Dell Mobile Workstation I had a few years back, though, which, apart from the Screen, was a piece of junk. But it made me buying a MBP, so, yeah...

I remember buying stuff from Handango. It was a nice store and had lots of apps! The only problem was that it was too expensive. USD 30 for a mailapp or calendar?

That's what actually made the App Store take off. The price! It was a new platform with a lot of independent developers. And they priced the software cheap! Of course the App Store sells tons a USD1/app compared to Handango selling WinMo apps at USD30-USD200 (some medical apps). That's what Apple actually invented, real competition and availability that drove the price to bottom. Good for both the consumers and developers, as devs sell "truckloads" of cheap apps.

Apple trying to do Ad business is just like google trying to do Phone business and like Microsoft trying to do Search business.

Sadly the same ending.
