(Not for me,I don't need one)Overkill for most professionals, there are a lot of professionals which don't need this MacPro, they could have though settled for an updated cheesegrater.
What is a professional in your view?!

Honestly, its the wheels that make the whole package worth it, am I right? What Pro doesn't want to spend more on wheels than they did for Final Cut Pro.... after all, you are a pro, you aren't allowed to make a fuss when Apple says bend over.....

This MacPro was/is overkill for most professionals, now most professionals are stuck with the iMac Pro, not a bad machine but it's an all in one which most professionals don't want.
Was it so hard to go back to the old cheesegrater, it itself was a beautiful machine, and affordable by most professionals.
Don't get me wrong, the new MacPro and especially the XDR are gorgeous, just out of reach for most professionals.

I second that sentiment.

Well said.

Funny that so many people who can't afford the display are only able to feel good by whining about it.

Guess I better hop on over to BMWrumors and have a good whine about the 840i convertible.

It's not 'whining' about the XDR specifically, it's a decent piece of tech'.

But it's the asinine £1k for the stand.

Or remembering when you could get Apple badged monitors that didn't cost £5k? It's having access to an Apple display at a rational price point for 'the rest of us.'

And it's related to the obnoxious yanking of the 'Grater' Tower machine from a capable machine for less money to £2.5k for a diminished machine... (which was already pricier and less effective than the former price brackets for the Mac Tower...) to a new paradigm where a tower has doubled the price...and adding a further 1k on top of that and then you have to pay more not to get a crepe gpu on it.

Nothing wrong with having 'uber kit' at uber prices.

But where's the rationally priced mainstream tower and display for the rest of us?

I'm not arguing that the Mac Pro isn't good hardware. I'm sure it is.

Its also not a replacement for the trashcan Mac Pro or the previous Mac Pros. Which is what a majority of previous Mac Pro users have been asking for.

The market for a beast of a machine like this is quite small; and I don't care if **you** bought one of these.... many professional video production houses that used FCP have switched away from Mac / FCP to PC / Premiere or DaVinci Resolve.... Yes, both of those can run on Macs, but if you made the switch do to lack of decent hardware for nearly a decade, why would you switch back now? You still are at Apple's mercy if they decide it didn't sell well enough, or if they decide to put a trinket on the next one which hobbles its use because some marketing genius thought it was cool.

Sure, some sat it out and waited, but Apple didn't even mention a new Mac Pro for 5 years, then preannounced this one a year early without specifics, and took nearly another year to deliver. I'm sorry, It doesn't take 7 years to design a new motherboard. It was low priority, and their decisions still don't reflect what many of their pro users have wanted.

Pretending Apple isn't completely scitzo on their decisions they make for their "professional" users doesn't make it any less so.

I wish they made it just a little bigger because it has been such an amazing display to have hanging on my bedroom wall for watching The Office. And with the new Mac Pro being so quiet, I have no need for an Apple TV in the bedroom anymore. I just wish that afterburner card made Netflix load faster.

Technically somebody making money using excel is a professional.
This argument is as dumb as a shoe.
You either need the power or you don't and it has nothing to do with being a "professional".

I'm sorry but that is very shortsighted comment.
He was right, Apple in certain way neglected those that helped in history. Their lack of transparency, care etc. led many people leave the platform. The new Mac Pro priced out many people out and if you want to know why look at 2008 models and 30" ACD for reference (for example).
Sure, Apple can do whatever they want but in the end, these things matter.
Apple set its brand for design, ease of use etc. Customers got used to this and thats why we are happy to often pay premium but everyone has a limit.
With your analogy - is it fine to charge $700 for wheels? or $1000 for a monitor stand? You may seem these reactions or complaints as childish but you are not considering those that use Apple for years and suddenly not only that Apple neglected this market since 2013 but when they finally showed us something they priced a lot of people out so those people have right to be upset especially if they were with Apple for many many years.

You may not see it that way but thats the reason why some people are not happy about this.

Apple is driven on feedback so its only fair to provide it or be vocal about it.

People seriously need to stop complaining when Apple tries to create a product that people want; even if they couldn't deliver to "your" standards previously. These companies don't have to release anything, and could go on a just deliver iPhones if it makes them money.

At the end of the day, we all do our work because we need to make money. Apple should be encouraged to put out more equipment at this level, and every time they release a proper crack at a pro system they should be promoted and applauded. Unless of course, you want to use a Windows machine instead ... but if you like and enjoy Apple stuff, maybe knock off the childishness like this post.

I'm happy Apple won this. Apple is definitely one of the most criticized tech companies; when the reality is, at least they TRY to make higher end gear for the type of consumer who appreciates attention to detail, good looking design, and a better operating system and ecosystem than what we have in Linux and Windows which are both pitiful by comparison.

Come on ...

You are personally happy because Apple won a design award? I can see being happy and proud when your child, significant other, friend accomplishes something major, but a multi billion dollar company winning an award causes you happiness?

Back to the real topic at hand though. Apple abandoned their Pro customers for years. Professionals view their computers and displays as investments and as a tool to help them make a living. they aren’t in the same category as you or I where we upgrade every once in a while when we want the newest tech. Professionals upgrade frequently since a computer is a depreciating asset and newer better ones are released allowing them to be faster with their workflows. If a professional felt abandoned by Tim Cook’s Apple they probably left and got a workstation from a manufacture/vendor that actually cares about and meets their needs. Apple knowly releasing a crippled trash can Mac Pro with no future was a pretty stupid idea. You mean to tell me the folks working at Apple being paid millions didn’t realize that by building a computer into a small cylinder that doesn’t have the thermal headroom to be expanded was a good idea? And then you wait 6 years before offering a replacement solution? And you want to tell me that Apple truly cares about their professional base? I’ve got an iPad that can replace your Mac Pro that is like to sell you then. There is no excuse. I defend Apple on some decisions, but this sure ain’t one of them. As a previous poster mentioned, it doesn’t take 6 years to design a logic board or a computer enclosure. No one was complaining about the old cheese grater design except Jony Ive. Keep in mind it doesn’t impact me personally as I’m just a consumer, but it’s no different than a vendor/manufacturer that I use for my job to stop releasing better products.. I’ll just move to a manufacture that values my business and listens to their high paying customers.

That's great but like nobody can afford it. Seems like a waste. I hate to pay even $500 for a display.

The fact that you don't need it and can't afford it, doesn't mean that others are in the same position.

People can't be happy about things unrelated to their friends and family?

It clearly causes you unhappiness, so the only difference is that you disagree with those who are happy.

lol, they said XDR monitor is the best monitor in the world during WWDC and yet it's not even near reference monitor's performance.

That’s entertainment. It’s also about supporting your own team. As someone born and raised in Massachusetts, I might support my local sports like the Bruins, Patriots or Red Sox... but it’s still entertainment. I could see being happy that the monitor you personally own being recognized as an outstanding product, but that’s like me being happy that Bugatti came out with a new super car. Never going to own it, never going to drive it, no affiliation with the company, why would it bring me happiness?

Exactly, took them 7 years to decide to go back to the previous design but with a lattice pattern and more than double the previous price.

I hope someday this display technology will be in all Apple displays without the high cost.

You and me both. We're not all millionaires. Apple's success in £££ and iPhones in that regard has clouded their vision.

I think the Mac Pro is a thing of beauty. But I don't see how they can't revise a model with i9s and a BTO Radeon 5700XT at a £2k (not exactly 'cheap...') starting price for those that don't want an AiO...with an Apple badged 4k display at £500 and 5k display for £1k. Hardly bargain basement prices. But it would allow many more to access the tower market.

Azrael.

Yes. The 7 year wait was an absolute disgrace. Shocking. If that's Apple 'listening' to the creative community...

It's almost like they flipped the finger at the creative community. Whether that was the intention or not.

Azrael.

I wish they'd make a more modest version with a 5k panel in the 27"-ish range.

I agree with @boss.king also - no HDR needed on a more modest version.

I also don't personally want a 32" screen on my desktop.
I did it for a few years and am loving being back in the 27-28" size class.

I do believe that any criticism against this display is, from Apple's perspective, self inflicted.

They made the mistake of comparing it to reference monitors, which are proven (even in side-by-side tests) to be practically unrivalled.

Had they positioned it as a mid-tier product, they could have gotten away with it.

But regardless, the product is still exception for the price. I really hope they release a smaller version at some point.

I hope at some point they release a non-XDR Pro Display. There countless pro industries that could benefit from a high-res display but don't want the needless cost, heat, etc of this HDR implementation.
Apple has already chosen to let LG take their place here. They sell the same displays that are in the iMac.

Apple products do more for the quality of my life than sports teams. And on that basis alone, why wouldn't I be happy for Apple that their products won some design awards?
