Too bad they aren't investing some of that into something actually useful for consumers. And if their lawyers are advising them that they should let various governments mandate the changes rather than carefully and thoughtfully making changes themselves, then perhaps they should retain new counsel. ?‍♂️
I can only assume the lawyers know more than us mere MacRumors posters. (although the possibility exists that some posters may be on the inside) Maybe Apple is hoping to get this legislation turned into a supreme court case....although there is most likely information up high that we aren't privvy to.

I also don't get their strategy here

This doesn't feel like a situation they'll ever fully "win" in the way they are hoping.

I hope they are secretly pondering some very proactive changes -- for their own sake if nothing else.

It's much better to make some measured and considered changes that regulators find acceptable, as opposed to being "forced" into something else.
It's very, very hard to understand what Apple thinks is going to happen here. I wonder if they are just institutionally incapable of giving in on this, given that Cook & Co. usually have excellent government relations.

That and I think the sweet sweet gaming IAP revenue "cocaine" is really hard to pull themselves off of.

Apple can certainly rise the price of iPhone in those market to make it up. At least that is one way of going about it.
I feel like everyone is forgetting that Apple chargers Devs $99+ per year to host their applications. Dropping requirement for IAP does not drop Apple profits to zero.

If they really wanted to make up lost revenue, this would be an easy go to.

Guess that is the point. Apple has never declared how it is going to control bank transfers and collect fees. What is the difference between using a locally implemented in app payment and a payment on a website? What if the app invokes a website for payment? What if the app displays the website in an integrated browser within the app?

Guess Apple is simply not allowed to control transfers of money? Why doesn't Microsoft charge me, when I use internet banking using Microsofts edge browser on Windows?

Apples proposal is simply rediculous. Will Apple charge me for any bank transfer that is done using macOS? What if I buy a movie on AmazonPrime using macOS? What if I use iPadOS? Does it make a difference if I use an App or the browser?

Lots of questions.

They got very greedy ...
The difference is the use of their platform, resources to acquire and support the app, server, APIs, access to the Apple brand that is extremely valuable. That alone is worth the 30% because we trust Apple far more that a company like Epic making more people more likely to complete the purchase.

Amazon Prime uses their own server, so does Netflix. They also bring their own customers. Game developers in particular are using Apple tools and hosting as well as getting their Apple customers via the App Store. The others attract their own customers via their platform and their App on IOS is just a portal to their platform. A totally different dynamic.

Netflix and Amazon are platforms that their free apps provide a convenience feature to Apple customers that use their services.

Epic on the other hand use Apple’s platform to acquire their iOS customers because they don’t have a platform of their own that customers can access directly without Apple or some other company’s tech. Think, Xbox. They claimed browsers would never worm at the beginning of this mess, but that story is falling apart.

Well, their country their rules and their laws, Apple can always leave if they want to.
Isn't that what it's used to be said here?! :D Apple should leave blah blah blah...

Anyway, in this case Apple should prepare to leave more countries, the whole EU, and probably even the U.S.
In my opinion, it's about time for them to enter the space exploration business, the spaceship they built can't take off.
Yet. 😉

Why do people insist on making comparisons between iOS and MacOS? The are not the same thing. Built on the same basic technology, but they function VERY differently.

What people in these governments are demanding Apple do is some how magically overnight. Make iOS the Mac OS and shut up about it and just do it cause we think its the right way for everyone. Not one iota of understanding of how it "works". And why it works so darn well. Just, "do it this way".

Ask any government how to build infrastructure. If you asked 100 different governments this question, on say how to build a road. Even if you gave them exact specs. You would get 4 to 500 different answers. As leaderships change, so to the rules on what way will work. It will take forever to get done, and cost more than anyone estimated. But, Apple. Change the way this OS works immediately. I know you had a perfectly functional OS for the last 14+ years. But, change it like right now cause we made this law that we think makes the most cents for everyone.

Because the differences that matter are really all about choices Apple has made, not actual technical limitations.

They are very very similar in the ways that matter...and since they are both Apple software, it's natural to compare how they are behaving very differently towards developers and users in each respective case

(without any actually valid reason for it --- other than hoarding excessive cuts of iOS App revenue)

Governments need to stop pussyfooting around with Apple. Issue a daily fine 10x their daily revenue in the country and see how long it takes Timmy boy to comply.
He would just pull out of the country. Disable the AppStore. Done. Enjoy your brick of a phone.

Limitations Apple has made, not tech limitations? What? Says who? If you can do it better, please apply to work at Apple and show them the way. Or, make a new product to compete with it. iOS is not Android anymore than it is MacOS. Similar to MacOS. But, I can't touch screen my iMac like my iPhone or iPad, or watch. Should we force Apple to make a touch screen? It's technically possible right?

Because they are different products with different use cases. Built for the use cases for which they are designed.
Can we compare shoes to skates? Sure, they both go over your feet. But, a skates purpose is VERY different from that of regular shoe. I don't expect my rear wheel drive BMW to handle well in snowy conditions like my 4x4 F150. But, they are similar so let's compare? We can go on.

30% is excessive, but no one is arguing how much it should be. Just that it's excessive. And they know it's excessive because they know how much it should cost.

So, enter the competition. Apple say that this is the price. But why exactly? Why can‘t I run my own servers or use a rhird party server?

Just look at what happens right now. Apple is evil and if the antitrust bill passes the senate, Apple is forced to open its platform and gone is all the money …
Apple can not be the gatekeeper and competitor to e.g. Spotify and charge them fees, while Apple Music doesn‘t have to pay a dime. This is what antitrust is all about.

Comparing Apples to Oranges.

When I'm buying an in-game artifact, armor or coins from the game's developer through their purchasing mechanism, Apple doesn't need to handle anything.

Same as my Netflix subscription. Which is not delivered by Apple, but by Netflix and its CDN partners.
The App Store is providing the platform to download those "Free" apps, which then become vehicles for these companies to monetize their "Free" apps through subscriptions and in-app purchases. Tens of millions of dollars in investment go into building and maintaining the App Store, but you hopefully knew that already.

Right, cause you wrote iOS.... You know what's in it, and how it works perfectly enough at least to make the case that it can be done, be done quickly and safely and work as expected from here on end........

That's true and Apple will try to use all anticompetitive practices they have backed up in their drawer, but they will have to bend over. The only winners will be Tim & Co. if they don't get sued at civil level for some kind of corruption.
Nothing is free and the opportunity to partner with the largest companies in the world and get to keep 70 to 85% of the profit with worldwide access to 2 billion customers with their credit cards on file and a fingerprint or face scan away from buying your app is a no damn brainer.

All of this is being instigated by 3 companies with ties to a China company that wants to take over Apple’s App Store Profits for themselves. This is really problematic because neither derives even 10% of their profits from App Store subscriptions.
