Fortunately, Apple's consumer base extends far beyond an increasingly vocal (and whiny) minority on Macrumours.

It absolutely does, but this number is meaningless in this context. Is Q2 usually higher than Q1? How's this Q2 compared to 2016, 2015? Compared to the last time they released an updated/refreshed MBP? Those are the numbers that would really show if this new Macbook is selling better.

I'm going to keep my 2016 15" mbp as long as I can. 32GB ram would be nice but I'm happy with the machine as it is. I want the next mbp I buy to be something really compelling. Maybe in 2020 they'll release a redesigned must have 5th gen mbp.

Mac sales have been consistently lower in Q2 than Q1 for the past decade. And the MacBook Pro makes up the majority of Mac sales (I thought it was the Air, but found figures going back the past decade that show the MBP is the most popular Mac model). So it does not seem unreasonable to conclude that this is an anomaly, albeit a positive one for the MacBook Pro.
