You'd think, after all the "under" deserved hype.

LOL they'll be here soon led by their leader kdarling talking about how Android will take over in 2012 and how all this is irrelevant because RIM and Nokia sell more than Apple.

Come on guys, comparatively the android is doing OK, just in no way killing iPhone.

The Pre is a big flop, WinMo still half dead, Blackberry and Symbian didn't compete in the same "super smartphone" league.

Android is doing OK. Comparing to all the other iPhone-Killers.

If not for Android, the mobile apps war would be over by now and quite frankly I don't want that.

Android seems to have already accomplished its primary goal, in this respect:

The news reports I'm seeing generally indicate that Android-based phones sold reasonably well during the holiday season, especially Droid, but holiday sales is not really an indicator of how well a phone is going to perform against the iPhone.

Also, we've seen a lot of new phones introduced lately and the Android phones get this huge benefit of pent-up geek enthusiasm. We see these jaw-dropping, sky-high sales figures right out of the gate and then they tend to drop off rather precipitously. Initial sales, especially before the holidays, is hugely misleading. What we need to see is where these phones are a year from now. Are sales still growing or have they stagnated?

For any smart phone to lay claim to the title of iPhone-killer, it must sustain its own sales first. So far, I haven't seen any would-be iPhone competitor do that. They've all burst on to the scene and then faded.

...

Well I'm pretty sure Droid sales will follow the suit.

Android rooters seems to be a forgetful bunch. The new item is already Nexus One. Droid? Droid who?

Google is trying to flood the market, which I find most annoying. Too many choices only increases my blood pressure.

I so wish it was true......

But sadly as long as Microsoft still can tax people for Windows and Office, the Borg will always have unlimited resource to keep the POS also known as WinMo on life support, forever.

Don't forget resident WinMo fanboy (a dying breed if there ever was one) AidenShaw and his magical WinMo phone that does everything well while his manager's iPhone can't make a call.

The Android marketing strategy is one of the biggest messes I've ever seen. The Droid ads sound like ads for Ford trucks, so pumped full of testosterone that even a hardcore geek recoils in fear and loathing. And if you buy a Droid from Verizon, you get a Droid Eris for free! Droid Eris? Droid? What??? Is there a difference? Talk about branding issues...

And their selling points are nonsensical to the average consumer. "Open development?" "Removable battery?" Seriously, these are the things Joe Q. Public is looking for in a phone? Hey Verizon, 2005 called - they want their cell phone sales pitch back.

A complete mess.

My sister-in-law just got an HTC Hero on Sprint. Had an iPhone for a couple of weeks but couldn't resist the dirt-cheap plans on Sprint (Sprint's death rattle?). What a piece of junk. The hardware can't handle the software. Not even close to the smoothness of the iPhone.

And G1 owners are still waiting for T-Mobile to update the G1 to the latest version of Android? Um, what is so "open" about that? Sounds like the same old story to me - carrier controls the hardware and the software.

Android is disintegrating into chaos and confusion. Not that most of us are surprised. I salute Google for putting a dagger in the heart of Windows Mobile, but I don't see Android bumping iPhone out of the top slot.

Exactly. I was trying to remember what happened to the T-Mobile G1 that was all-the-rage on tech sites a year ago. I think it's morphed into the HTC but I'm not sure. I recall that being dubbed the iPhone killer at some point.

Google is trying to flood the market, which I find most annoying. Too many choices only increases my blood pressure.

I don't find too many choices to be a bad thing, but I think Google and their Android partners risk confusing consumers with too many similar products to choose from.

Strange - while he's adamantly particular in his multiple, derogatory references to the iPhone, he's equally reticent about revealing the make and model of his magical Winmo wonder.

Might he be ashamed?

Perhaps so - however, his inconsistencies, in this regard, are quite revealing.

And who are you to determine what is a sucky carrier. I'm sure you speak for all 80 million plus AT&T customers?

If a carrier is bad where you live, then it's bad. Only the most ardent fanboy could pretend that AT&T doesn't have some real network problems in some major markets.

And AT&T really is bad in the Bay area. Some places good, some OK, some bad.

I know of companies around here who have informal "Iphone lounges" - conference rooms, balconies or other areas where people with Iphones go to get signal. It really is a joke.

I hated the Verizon ads about iPhone being a useless pretty girl while posing Droid as a macho man.

I hated it so mcuh, I find it borderline bigoted.

Then I actively dissuaded anyone in my family and close friends circle from getting the Droid this holiday season, even if they absolutely have to be on Verizon. All I can say is FUD is a very powerful tactic, and there are 5 more tour users, you are welcome RIM.

I hated the ad that much.

Yeah and Verizon is equally as useless in some markets, what is your point. Does that make them a sucky carrier?

The happiest day of my geek life will be the day Apple decides to use some of those tens of billions it has socked away to build their own wireless network (or partner to do so) and cut the cel providers out completely. There's a lot they could do if they had complete control of their own network. It sounds nutty but it has been their model for some things (building their own hardware to support their software and vice versa, PA Semi acquision). Wireless will only become a more critical component in the years to come, not less.

So they should build their own network in every country they sell iphones in? You know how much money that would cost?

Consequentially, those ads will remain ineffectual, with the absence of a product actually capable of living up to the hype.

Even from within the vast realms and depths of his own set of double standards, yes.

You are falling behind in your ability to support your arguments....

But more to the point, look at my comments and notice that the majority of them are related to the usability of the Iphone on the AT&T network, not to the Iphone itself (although I'm a fan of physical keyboards, so I've made that clear).

Other advanced smartphones on other carriers don't seem to have the connectivity and call quality problems of the Iphone+AT&T. I've not been claiming that my Verizon/WinMo phone is a better PDA than the Iphone (except for the keyboard issue), but saying that it's a great telephone (umm, isn't that the primary mission?) and I get good 3G coverage everywhere I go in the Bay area. (No bars in Papua New Guinea, though.)

But, go ahead and pretend that Iphone call quality and network issues are only Aiden's imagination. ;)

As I said, "nice phone on a sucky carrier == sucky phone".

Except that Apple can barely keep up with demand, and consumers are willing to put up with AT&T in record numbers just to get an iPhone. Not bad for a "sucky phone", whatever that means.

This isn't confirmed sales figures, this is one or two analysts making greater predictions than the others. This is gossip and rumours, and yet the fanbois are out in force to congratulate Apple, as if they had already sold all those phones. Of course if the predictions had been negative the same fanbois would be saying "This analyst is in Microsoft's pocket" or "This analyst is a paid up RIM supporter." No analyst predicting Apple's bright future could ever have an alterior motive.

Keep hating. it's all fun and games until Apple posts record iPhone sales for this quarter. Again. EVERYONE is predicting a bright future for Apple, and it's prefectly logical to do so.

Try following the trends a little more closely, and you'll see that this is just the tip of the iPhone iceberg. So yes, it's perfectly normal to congratulate Apple because we already know what the result will be.

Why would the predictions have been negative? This is the iPhone we're talking about. Duh.

But, go ahead and pretend that Iphone call quality and network issues are only Aiden's imagination. ;)

Except those call quality issues don't exist in Canada, for example. And our networks are perfectly fine.

We`ll see in a few weeks when Apple confirms the numbers, but you`ll still be here talking ***** anyways.

That's so dumb. Apple have made ads just as offensive.

Not at first. Start in the US, they can continue to use existing networks in other countries and expand as they see fit, just like they don't have to use AT&T (or any one provider) in every country now. Sure, you might have some advanced features not available in those countries initially, but you could still sell phones. You can't use Wi-Fi on Chinese iPhones, but they're still selling them there until they figure out how to make it happen. And yes, it would be super-expensive for them to do it, but remember they'd also get 100% of the revenue from the wireless service, and they already have a lot of things they'd need, such as hundreds of retail stores worldwide, an established online store, and iTunes/AppStore to move and sell apps and media over the network.
