I still think this is waporware.. I just don’t see the public thinking “hey, Let’s spend 1000$+ to isolate ourselves or our kids from the real world”.
Besides, killer app’s can only really be found in the enterprise space (guides and visualization). In the private space, games is the only currently known “potential killer app” for complete isolation like this. Sure - it will be fun to try other stuff - but I don’t see a daily driver usecase worth a 1000$+…
If VR gaming was so great, there would have been a breakthrough game by now that pushed VR into the mainstream and made everyone want to buy an Oculus. That hasn't happened and I highly doubt it will happen once Apple releases their headset. Apple has never been serious about gaming, quite the opposite really. I agree that the "killer apps" are mostly in the enterprise space, but since when has Apple taken the enterprise market seriously? It's like the two most obvious markets for a device like this are the two markets where Apple is weakest.

Well well. I’ve been pretty skeptical of articles like this over the years. But in the context of everything we’re seeing right now, I think this might actually be accurate.
We already know EVERYTHING that Gurman just posted. He's literally just plucked all the rumors and emailed them! Ayayay,..do people seriously believe that he has any inside info?

We need the Killer device first, the killer apps come later. Just walking around in a city with a cyberpunk overlay is a killer app for me personally, I would even travel to cities that have this worked out. Pokemon AR would be a no brainer, shooter games in the real world, zombie running game and other sports. It all depends on the device.

I guess developers who actually want to develop for this thing and haven't been lucky enough to be hand-picked by Apple will have to wait months after it's released to find out how the APIs work at WWDC 23. That sounds... not great.
That's usually the way it goes.

Though, if they "launch it" April/May.... deal out dev kits... then have sessions at WWDC (which is smart to release it before WWDC and leverage the conference) and it launches Fall (which could be November) that does give 6-7 months lead time to developers... which for porting existing titles is probably a fairly good amount of time because VR/AR titles are pretty small.

It's new content or exclusive content that would be lacking.

I never knew I needed a self driving foldable car until you just mentioned it. Now I hate my non foldable EV.

Things that don't fold just... suck!

As an 80's kid I thought the "future" (meaning the 2000's) would have foldable, self-driving flying cars... and light sabers.

I'm so disappointed.

That's fair. I agree, there has been no "killer device" yet. That said, I'm not sure most people are interested in walking around the city with a cyberpunk overlay. Personally I find all of these ideas pretty sad. Where's the fun, the adventure, in exploring a place if you're just being led around by some AR headset? That vision of the future seems really boring to me.

Apple is very serious about gaming - mobile gaming. For AAA games, I agree absolutely not.

I can think of a lot of "assistive" informational overlays for AR in an industrial context. Would Apple need a consumer market to sell enough volume for an AR/VR device? Quite possibly

Agreed on mobile gaming, but that's not what people mean when they talk about gaming or VR's gaming potential. I don't think anyone is going to be blown away by a VR version of Crossy Road. That's not a "killer app". For Apple's VR headset to become the must-have VR gaming device, it needs AAA games and it needs to blow everything else away. I don't see them going this route. They're happy to rake in the money on mobile games that are basically 80s arcade games with better graphics (but not that much better). They have to do a lot better than that to make their VR headset a gaming essential.

I think many of us see the benefit of VR and AR especially in an industrial or enterprise context. But even then, it is for specific tasks. A big company has 10,000 employees. Almost all of them have a PC on their desk. Almost all of them have a mobile phone. What reason could there possibly be for all of them to have a VR/AR headset, much less a very expensive one? There's no reason. Maybe a small percentage of the company workforce uses VR/AR, but that might only be a few hundred headsets. And, if you're a business, let's get real, why would you choose Apple's headset over the Hololens? Chances are you already use Microsoft for everything else.

Apple doesn't really do small markets. They don't do enterprise. They don't do AAA gaming. I'm sure they're prepared for their "mixed reality" headset to be a slow burn. It won't be like HomePod, where they realized the market just didn't want it so they promptly canned it. I don't see that happening with the headset. They've invested too heavily in AR/VR. They need the consumer market to buy in. I'm just not convinced that most consumers want it. There's a built-in fanboy audience that will buy anything they sell, but once those people have bought it, will there be a market? I'm doubtful.

If Apple partners with Unity as has been rumored, then I hope VRChat comes to this device. Even if it would mean having a separate client (as they did with Quest) with separate builds for shaders, avatars, etc, it would be such a cool device to develop VR worlds on as a standalone unit.

If the Apple headset's graphics slay the Quest how I think they will and VRChat releases on the device, these units are going to sell like hotcakes no matter the price.

Well they seem to be banking on being the ones to start it, to do what Meta couldn't and finally make AR mainstream.

Apple Watch wasn't first but it seems to be the most successful smart-watch. iPhone wasn't first but it blew other smartphones out of the water. The HomePod was a true example of Apple getting to the market late and failing to change it.

I guess we'll see what happens with these goggles, but I don't predict them being the ultimate game-changer "next iPod" that some seem to think.

I'm 24 and I feel the same. I still use tech as a tool, something I can be somewhat detached from, and something that I still have some control over and doesn't think for me. I have significantly cut down on social media/forum use in recent years. I don't want a device that replaces my senses. For gaming I think it could be a fun thing to use occasionally. As a phone or computer replacement, no thanks.
Yes, I don’t really care if they have the best selling products like the Apple Watch, the product is crap anyways, it’s just “me too”

They haven’t released a single new product that was great since Steve Jobs left the company

Fitbit was before Apple Watch. Therefore Apple Watch was a me too product by that logic
Yes, Apple Watch is a “me too” product. Just to clarify, I don’t equal being second to being a “me too” product. A “me too” product is a product that doesn’t add anything meaning I to the existing market just like the Apple Watch.

Wait - "While Apple still has many kinks to work out with the device —involving hardware, software and services, as well as how it will be marketed and sold — the company is banking on the product as its hot new introduction for this year. "

So... kinks with everything and it's supposed to be announced within the next few months and launch this year? 😵‍💫

Sorry but I couldn’t be less interested in this. Sure, it will be cool to see the usual YouTube suspects go on and on and on and on about how amazing it is, but can’t Apple focus on fixing the bugs instead of this pointless product?

Just my opinion, I respect yours.
It depends on how you look at it and what they show it can do.
For less mobile people VR will be huge in the future, being able to see world heritage sites in full HD and move around them would be incredible. I'm not sure if you've used VR before but the scale and depth is incredible.

I have the PSVR2 coming after using the VR1 for a while and I'm looking forward to it for gaming too, gaming though is something apple don't do well (imo - too much grinding in most iOS games)

The ultimate device for social isolation. I guess I am getting too old, however I feel sorry for our future generations. Take a walk in a park and enjoy the true natural world.
Why would they when they could strap this on and choose ANY park in the WORLD to go walk through??

I say this tongue in cheek, I agree with you btw.

He gets paid to do what most of us do for free. Getting paid for predicting the future sets many apart from the amateurs... even if some of the amateurs think they do it better.

If anyone of us knows better, we should monetize our expertise at forecasting "what's coming." Else, those who already have tend to be the one that gets quoted here, there and everywhere.

What percentage of people won't be able to use this device because it makes them dizzy and nauseous? I'm sure I would be counted among them.
