Really interested how this pans out, I'm concerned though, with the time schedule, as I like having the newest device, can't afford to resale more then once a year :p

Keep the management tight and focused. With apples huge war chest, good times ahead!

Oh, and DOWN WITH SKEUOMORPHISM! :)

I find it vaguely amusing that this word doesn't even appear in OS X's built-in dictionary.

well the uncertain release of iTunes 11 with no beta whatsoever seems to be the first step in the wrong direction ;)

oka blah so who is head of "lets make IOS new and better and different" and who is in charge or "lets makes IOS devices new and better and different"? no one... apple has peaked..

Drance has a good point. The responsibilities look much more streamlined now. I just hope Ive doesn't implement the Windows Metro UI type of minimalism where every app looks so similar.

It reminds me a bit of what's happened to Microsoft:

[*]Using one design chief across all products, resulting in throwing out great ideas like the Courier tablet in favor of Metro.

Courier could've used the Metro UI style and still kept all the core selling points. But more importantly, Courier was nothing but a mock up with hype. I couldn't believe how many people on the internet thought those design and functionality were actually possible with the technology available in 2009. It was one of those ideas that look good on paper until you think about the technical realities.

The "Ship it on time" vs "Ship it when it's ready" change happened around the time of Jobs' return; and it's not necessarily a bad thing.

Firstly, there were some projects that just rolled on for more than a year without any focus (Power Express possibly the worst); not to mention the pre-OSX attempts to develop a new MacOS. Having a more concrete schedule can be a very good thing.

Also, with more prevalent internet access in the late '90s and early '00s, it meant that shipping updates / bug fixes became practical. Getting it perfect on release date wasn't critical. Arguably, as systems get more complex it's less and less likely you'll have any product bug-free on release anyway.

Of course, it's important that the schedule is internally set (based on the time taken to accomplish the work) rather than externally (to match a competitor, or to be ready for a major expo).

Interesting change. It makes sense in theory--one head over each aspect of design, as opposed to the different branches of said aspects.

I'm actually pretty excited by all of this.

Eddy seems to be a very competent guy, and I'd expect some stable, consistent upgrades to Maps, Siri, and iCloud in the next 12 months that'll make them real, usable services.

Craig is the one that makes me the most nervous. We've had all this "Back to the Mac" stuff for a while now, taking iOS features that people love and bringing them to OS X. I'd like to see some stuff from OS X make its way into iOS. Even as a stolen product, Android is starting to look really full-featured compared to iOS. As someone who would like to get a tablet, but can't go without UI features like multiple desktops and OS X applications like Mathematica and Xcode, I'm apprehensive but hopeful about the future of both iOS and OS X.

Does anything need to be said about Jony? The buck stops with him on all design now. That's fantastic news.

This is what I would like to see also. If they are going to merge, bring in more goodies from OSX

Can definitely say I'm more than A-Okay with these choices. Especially with Ives getting more responsibility.

Because of this, I cannot wait for the next version of iOS.

And of course we will complain bitterly that Apple doesn't care about us, the users, when we don't get the updated products on the schedule we've come to expect:

New iPads ALWAYS come in the Spring! It's been that way for as long as I can remember (back to 2010, that is). How dare they refresh it after only seven months! We iPad 3 buyers deserve a full year of having the latest and the greatest. And the Mac Pro needs to be refreshed NOW, whether it's ready or not.

Why do you deserve the latest and the greatest? Apple don't give a flying fudge if you're crying about it, they will always make money and there is not such thing as being 'loyal' or a company these days. Yes you payed for the iPad, but also nowhere does it say 'Will have a years guarantee of being the latest', neither does it say that they are willing to stand still while technology runs ahead of them, and Android steal the show.

Grand year for Apple. Improvement to every product line (except Mac Pro which is coming next year). Now improvements to the executive staff. We should see better products for at least the next 2 years.

Yay!!!

There is hope for iWork after all for desktop users.

Like other people I have been waiting for a completed product, rather than a half baked-time table version.

Hopefully there will actually be an updated version, I like to use Pages a lot.

I thought he was being kinda sarcastic. Hope I wasn't wrong...:)

I just hope

That Cook and Ive, have secretly been working on an updated iOS since a year ago. Similar to how Jobs was secretely working with his people on OSX for Intel a while ago. So we do not have to wait two years to see some of Ive´s work and probably next spring we will be seeing the future roadmap of iOS.

Exactly what Steve used to do!

My first thought after reading this was this was what Steve used to do, software, design, and services. Maybe not in that order but good luck to all of Apple as they move ahead! :apple:

Apple needs to decouple software versions with their hardware versions. I know they like to release gated features with their devices but this would allow them to release features that aren't half baked like Siri and Maps.
